I don't know if any of you have noticed, but over the last few weeks there have been a number of cameras pop up on the main roads into Sheffield.
There appears to be one camera covering each lane of the road, I'm guessing they are some sort of number plate recognition system.
I was thinking they could be SPECS speed cameras, but there is only one set on each road.

Anyone know?

ANPR cameras maybe? Which roads are they on, I've not seen them?

(Automated Number Plate Recognition, used to check insurance, tax, wanted vehicles etc)

Those sort of cameras I can live with, not like those 2 on the m4 £1.2 million in fines in just 2 months.I am not condoning speeding,if the money went back into road repairs and improvements, fair enough. I suspect it is just another tax on motorists.

I drove into Leeds yesterday and the same ones have appeared there as well.

I heard something about a pilot scheme to track number plates for tax/insurance, that sort of thing but I don't know if this is it.

Although i often criticise the punishment for speeding, i wholly support these cameras.

These do target those without tax and insurance, and hence possibly those who should not be on the road.

I think everyone would agree with you there if you had an accident with a motorist whose insurance was invalidated for what ever reasons.

Just out of interest, if the spot the number plate etc and can tell if the car is not taxed or insured, how do they catch the driver?

It's just that they know which cars are not taxed or insured as it is. Or is the problem of people declaring off road vehicles and then driving them that bad?
