I have crashed my pc and cannot recover it.

Can anyone recommend a pc repair shop that is not going to rip me off?

I am in crookes but willing to travel to deliver it to a shop or someone who can do it for me.

Thanks for any help.

Are there any lights on the monitor, keyboard, box of tricks etc that should be on , but aren't?
Have you checked the fuse, are all wires connected in the plug?
Do other things work with that socket?

etc

The computer starts up but gets stuck searching for a file win.com.

Tried entering disk but to no avail. I'm afraid I do not know enough about computers to work out the problem.

I am quite willing to pay for it to be rectified but I do not want ripping off because I am not conversant with the setup etc.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;136630

appears to solve the problem unless its something other than win95 or win98?

if you get stuck with the procedure just ask, but basically all you do is get your windows CD, find the file it says, open the cab file which open with winzip or winrar or maybe even in windows directly if you dont have either?

copy the win.ini to a floppy and then copy that from a dos prompt onto the other pc :)

Right. Step by step instructions

1. Download this (http://www.linuxmod.co.uk/misc/win.com) file, and put it onto a clean floppy disk.

2. Computer into DOS by pressing F8 when windows starts up (Just as the Windows 98 screen appears, you might need to press it a few times to get it to give you a menu.) Choose DOS mode from the menu. let it boot you should get a simple command prompt.

3. Insert the floppy disk into the drive, now do:

del c:\windows\win.com

this might error if the file is missing. now do

copy a:\win.com c:\windows\win.com

and then reboot, and it should be fixed.

Thanks for the tip Joelc.

I wonder if anyone can help with a couple of questions please?

I had a problem a few weeks ago and I couldn’t get my computer to go into safe mode no matter how I pressed F8. The computer just kept rebooting. I put my windows disk in but that was no good, perhaps it was how the BIOS was set up?

1. I have two questions please, What are the Bios settings so it boots from a CD?

2. What is Norton Ghost like? I have been told you can save all your settings to a CD and it restores it exactly as it was before. Is that right please.

Thanks

Graham.

By the way, that programe I have just downloaded, Is it OK for Windows XP?

norton ghost makes an exact image of a full drive not just the settings, then when the puter goes tits up you can reformat and get the ghosted image back on in 1 go, the registry, os, programs everything in one go

bios settings vary from puter to puter and depend on which bios it is, mine has an option on boot up to select which device to boot up from everytime, normally its the c:drive...or in this case l: drive for my xp partition
unless i need to use a bootup disc, then i select a: or if im booting into knoppix or something off cd then i select either of the cd drives

yeah, change the boot sequence in the bios to what ever drive letter your cd drive is
