View Full Version : Springtime tulips
HarryMac 06-04-2009, 20:11 Had a chance to get out for an hour with the cam, but with only an hour i stayed around our village as there are plenty of Daf's and tulips planted all over so i just had to take advantage while i had the light on my side and here are some results.

Thanks for the interest, Paul.
Love the DOF in the 1st one, just about perfect for me. Not so convinced on the 2nd though.
Maybe a shallower DOF would work well in the second? So a red flower on a non-descript yellow background?
They work well together as set in the last image
floralfoote 07-04-2009, 08:13 they look lovely, not a great photographer myself but love what I see
HarryMac 07-04-2009, 08:32 Cheers guys, DaFoot......i used the largest f that the lens would allow, maybe need to invest in a nifty fifty 1.7 but there again we would all like more gear lol

I got myself an old Minolta 50mm f1.7, possibly my fave lens. Certainly most used!
ImpInaBox 07-04-2009, 08:45 I'd have to agree with Dafoot on #2. Really shallow DOF to isolate the red tulip against the green and yellow background. I've found that the best 'isolation' often comes from a longer lens rather than just a wide aperture and my trusty (and cheap) old Canon 28-200 used at 200mm/f5.6 has given good results. A face at a wedding picked out among some brollies springs to mind - if I can find it I'll post it.
BTW - like the tryptich - well - apart from the pink surround - tho I'd have been inclined to reverse the rhs pic - for overall composition.

I totally agree with you imp, on both points. The pink background was my little nest of vipers input on the final result......girls :hihi:
Cheers, H.
corkneyfonz 07-04-2009, 08:52 On this occasion, a different interpretation has worked out exceptionally well. The final photo is inspired. I am not worthy.
HarryMac 07-04-2009, 09:08 Anyone is worthy fonz.
ImpInaBox 07-04-2009, 09:11 ...I am not worthy.
This is creepy - what happened to the dog wit? :o
HarryMac 07-04-2009, 09:55 Taken advice on board and made the changes to the final result with a little clone work on one of the petals that didn't look right to me.

I know I'm finding it remarkably odd too
As for the pics... I really like what you have done. I also think it another arrangement couls have been.
Tulip close - Togther - Daff close
A bit of a story withing the three pics, kind of a natural flow as if you were walking through the garden... one leads on to the other...
There nice, I saw some in the botanical gardens yesterday. You should take some photos down there, I took a few but only with a 2MP camera phone.

I see where your going with this and it's a good idea for another project and maybe have the two as a twin set for selling.
Hi Harry Mac
Loving the idea of the 3 photos together with the background and fancy having a go at it. Did you do it in Photoshop? Can you give me some tips on how to produce it please??

I do all this kind of stuff in PS.
First make a new canvas ( FILE-NEW ) by adding all three image pixel widths together with the height of the images, also take into account the borders that you are wanting around the images. You will end up with quite a large canvas to work with, the spring original ended up being width 11930 pixels width by 3655 pixels height. If you want to choose a colour for the canvas now is a good time to do it by using the paintbucket tool in PS.
One you have your canvas, now open your three images in PS, i personally drag and drop the images into PS.
Now you can start placing your images onto the canvas that you created by using the move tool in PS.
Once you have the images onto your new canvas maximize it and zoom in to get them aligned and spaced properly.
If you are looking to make a coloured edge border then do this by going to IMAGE along the top menu then go to canvas and you will get a dialog, make sure relative is checked and change CM to pixels, select a colour and add as many pixels as you want. Use this process again for more creative edges.
Good luck, and hope to see some results.
H.
Thanks for that HarryMac.
I'm supposed to be marking coursework but trying that sounds much more appealing. I will have a go this afternoon and post my results!
Here we go then HarryMac............my first attempt!

Any suggestions for improvement??
Amanda88t 11-04-2009, 22:04 Beautiful!
Amanda88t 11-04-2009, 22:05 Change the blue... its just too dominating.
Change the blue... its just too dominating.
Thanks Amanda. What colour do you think would look good?? White with a black border??
Does this look better?

HarryMac 12-04-2009, 07:03 Would be better against a black background as the sky in the RHS shot is bleeding into the white background, using black or dark grey would isolate all the shot's, or you could but a thin black edge around the shots first if you still wanted to go with the white background......bloody good first attempt though
Here's another couple to get yer juices flowing, in a creative sense that is.

I used colours from the image for the border and title to compliment the image for this one and not overpower it.

A plain black border here to lift the colours in the image.
Suddenly the thread has changed to a use of borders thread:hihi:
astraman 12-04-2009, 14:17 Thanks for the instructions H.
Here's my first attempts.
1/ These pics were taken with my old Fuji compact and I've lost the originals so these are from very small files. I used them 'cos I like the sequence of shots.

2/ This is a Hupmobile spotted at Foxton Beach in New Zealand

Please be gentle as they are a first attempt.

Yes I'd say so, perhaps do a thinner stroke round the edge, or two strokes one just slightly thinner then one a little further in... worth having a go?
you could also try either a grey or a light blue (very light and only just coloured) background instead just to see if this lifts the images. one thing that might be worth doing is doing a very thin stroke round each image as well?
Hope this helps
