i was talking to a friend today and she mentioned that she used to feed her Dog Rice mixed with normal dog food to build her female dog up after she gave birth a few months back and she said it worked great?
Does anyone else know if this works?

I make my own dog food and use chicken and rice or Lamb and rice with a few vegetables, Mojo has gained much needed weight since i started doing this.

My dog easily gets an upset stomach. He is now on a prescription diet but the vet said the other alternative would be to homecook for him and feed plain foods and he suggested chicken, rice and potatoes so rice must be fine for them.

Brown rice is best, ya can also give then wholemeal pasta, i feed my dog on this as hes diabetic, it helps keep his weight up without raising his sugar levels, Pasta isnt as messy as rice when it comes out tho :)

Brude's eating rice recipes at the moment as Zeb HAS to, and he'd have a face on if he was getting plain old dog food

last night Zeb got his with egg, and Brude had egg and peas

tonight Brude got the leftover egg and peas with added tuna, and Zeb had rice and tuna with antibiotic tablet - which disappeared without him noticing :D

Yep i give rice and palined boiled chicken or fish when they are unwell or recovering. They also love pasta and fish as a treat. We have never had any problems with giving it.

Most puppy food has rice in it as it helps to build them up. James Wellbeloved complete dry food has rice in it too (think it is brown rice)

I feed my dog raw meats. They are very healthy with glossy coats.

I've started mine off on raw meat / chicken carcass dinners he seems to be enjoying it and I'm trying to stick some veggies in and add natural yoghurt as he gets used to it. Works out much cheaper than dog food as well. No ill effects on the stomach front and it's been much more pleasant :gag: to scoop up after him  What kind of raw meats do you feed? and do you add any supplements? Got to get him to the vets to check his weight as I need to make such I'm getting the amounts right, he is on a pound and a half of chicken carcass a day but got a feeling it may need to go down little. He needs to loose another couple of Kg to get to ideal weight.

I always have starved and then fed rice and egg if a dog has an upset tummy... my old golden retriever ended up on a rice and white fish/ chicken diet as she had a very delicate stomach. She stayed nice and slim though.

Boxers and rotties love raw meat - BARF feeding. Although my boxer cant handle rice - he seems unable to pick it up in his big slobbery gob. The cockers often have rice especially leftovers from tea or pasta even.

The only things to avoid giving your dog, are chocolate and onions. mine have their kongs stuffed with mash, veg and rice daily, one of my dogs will eat any kind of fruit, she just loves the stuff, full of sugars though so can't have too much

My dog and his brother are on the raw meat and chicken and veg and love it.No more tummy upsets, coats are really glossy and he doesn't scratch anymore (yey!)
There is a place at Malin bridge (behind park and ride) that sell the meat in packs , we give ours (a lab) one pack for his tea with the veg (you can buy this frozen and already mashed up there aswel). for his breakfast he has 3/4 chicken wings and maybe a raw egg aswel.

If you unsure how much your dog needs they will advise you.

Thanks, It is a bit trial and error at the moment! He is 29Kg (64 pounds) and should be 27.5kg and we are feeding about 1 1/2 pound of chicken carcass. Or 1 pound of chicken carcass and 1/4 pound of beef chunks. I will have a look next time I'm down that side of town. It's always useful to know these places. We currently pay £2.50 for 6 pounds worth of chicken so it works out about £5 a week to feed him.

I know they get there supplies from somewhere called Durham dog feed/food somthing like that as they used to deliver to our house but you have to get quite a large order and we didn't have room in our freezer!
If you drve past Towshaw its the first turning on your left just before the traffic lights, blink and you miss it!

Hi Everyone
Donnas is the place behind Towsure and she stocks a variety of raw meats and other pet supplies. There is a good range of meats including chicken, tripe, rabbit, beef, lamb, venison and much more. If you want to raw feed, you have a great variety to choose from and can buy as much or as little as you require.
I would NEVER go back to giving my dogs pet food. The stories that I have read about and the crap that goes into dog food makes feeding raw the right way to go.
My dogs have a combination of raw meats, not just one all the time, meaty bones, especially chicken and rabbit carcasses . The addition of a "couple of ounces of liver" can have amazing results - you need to get the right amount so as not to give your dog the runs. Honey,Pro biotic yoghurt and cod liver oil (I put a tblsp everyday in evening meal) Raw eggs including shell, 4 a week each. I add kelp powder and garlic and coconut (act as a natural flea and worm repellent) They still have some table scraps which isnt very often.

My two dont have veg but I would liquidise raw veg if I was going to give it. They have tripe quite often and that already contains veg.
There are many dogs in Sheffield that have a condition called Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency that have been helped if not cured by eating pigs pancreas rather than been given enzymes to add to food by their vets.
I find that this way of feeding works and although it can be a bit stinky sometimes (especially the tripe) the dogs are thriving and look well and healthy.

Sounds good, I will have to have a look there next week.

The only problem is the freezer! The dog has more shelves than I do for his food  I tried adding raw liver but did it too fast and too much and I had a lovely day of cleaning up :gag: Think I'll keep the liver to training titbits:)

I have heard of kelp being added what exactly is that for? Is it a vitamin thing?

I do worry that I'm not giving him everything he needs but it can't be worse than tinned food and he refuses to eat dried stuff, he'd rather not eat for a couple of days that eat that stuff!

Ferreter, may I ask what type of dogs you have? and how much weight wise you feed daily?
