Possibles... (in no particular order)...

1. Will it boot into BIOS? If able and familiar - check system BIOS to see if your hard drive is detected there.

2. Memory. Check that memory is seated correctly. (Especially if the memory has been upgraded recently).

3. The heatsink on the chip may need re-seating with thermal paste. HP laptops are notorious for overheating and shutting down. Also clean fan, fan housing and heatsink fins by blowing through with compressed air. May require partial removal of hardware, and casing components.

4. Try a friends known good hard drive in your laptop. If it works, get yourself a new drive. If it doesn't, the problem lies elsewhere.

Good luck

all the above is great advice. What often find a good point of reference is typing in your laptop model and the problem into google and see if other people have had the same problem. Also you tube run through guides on how to clean your laptop insides are good...

thats how things break
make sure hard drive is insert properly
when laptops get put away then can get banged etc causing hard drive to move

so you can get to bios ok
so i would guess hard drive fault
you might get away with new install of windows putting it on laptop it will reformatt your hard drive
if you have windows xp / vista disc etc

are there any beeps at all? depending on how many beeps there are at start up that will tell u the problem... if there are no beeps i am stumped... still think it maybe from over heating? are you on it alot for a long time (facebook can be addictive)

The IDE cable could have come unplugged particularly if the machine's taken any kind of knock. Or the cable itself might have failed through long exposure to heat (I've known that happen). But I'd have thought the most likely cause is a failure on the PCB inside the drive itself. Regardless, you'll need someone to open it up for you.

Are you responding to the same thread??

Just buy a new hard drive. 99% chance that it's just died.
