Bit of information given to me by local resident of Darnall. Nickname "Monkey" pub, used to be on Darnall Road, near Coventry Road, which leads to Darnall cemetry,on the corner of Coventry Road left hand side was a shop then the pub and next to pub was a barbers shop, run by a Ken Bingham. Across from the pub was Whitby Road School, now called Greenland School. Apparantly it got it's nickname from a pot or ceramic monkey that used to be on the bar. Don't know real name or when it was demolished, hope this is of interest to you, post again if i hear more. ALL THE BEST. PETE 22-07-2005, 00:13 used to walk past the monkey on my way to school as a kid . i went to whitby road which was just across darnall road . my dad used to drink in the monkey with his dad the real name of the monkey was the vine it got its nickname because ther was a stuffed monkey hanging behind the bar my dad once borrowed it and took it to work . dont know what kind of monkee it was but it was very small and was in a little gold cage next door was old man coopers junk shop he used to sit on the step of the shop in a shirtless collar with snuff marks on it sharkw 24-07-2005, 20:24 " The Monkey " was on Darnall main road and it stood fcing a little sand "rec" It's proper name was " The Old Cricket Gounds" and it shut down in 1969 or there abouts I remember when you went in there was a dart board facing you ,as for the monkey ... never saw that jacklev1 24-07-2005, 21:37 THANKS FOR THE INFO JACKLEV1:thumbsup:  Strix 24-07-2005, 21:44 http://www.picturesheffield.co.uk/cgi-bin/picturesheffield.pl?_cgifunction=form&_layout=picturesheffield&keyval=sheff.id=8980 Which doesn't say if it's in Darnall or not  PETE 24-07-2005, 22:37 shark youre right about the location but wrong about the name it was the vine no doubt if i dug out the old mans photo's out there might be a photo Keanaz 20-09-2005, 18:20 I used to live on Nightingale street which was opposite the Monkey (VIne) and we used to play in the sandpit, my brother got thrown off the roof there and broke his arm I would go and get a paper the Green Un on a Saturday for a neighbour from the shop virtual opposite, just passed the fish N chip shop what a great place Any one remember the Darnall Medical Aid parades in the summer and the Church parades to High Hazels Park at WHitsun Pity its a right **** ole now exhatter 21-09-2005, 04:24 Are you my sister or brother cos I lived on Nightingale Street and used to play in the sand pit opposite the vine. And my brother fell off the garage roof playing tag and broke his arm. We daren't go home cos mi dad would kill us. The sand pit got filled in with concrete and all we had left to play on was the swings. Do you remember O BO JUG? He was the filthy coal man that lived with his brother a few houses down from the vine. The house looked deserted as all the windows were broken and it had no furniture and as kids we were all scared of him, cos he would run at us, cursing obscenities. my name is linda multiparvo1 26-09-2005, 16:00 I was born in a cottage on Darnall Road opposite the pub nicknamed the Monkey. Its proper name was The Cricket Ground Inn, and the Vine Inn was actually on Vine Road (the size of one terrace house) which ran off Darnall Road parallel to Coventry Road which led into Darnall Cemetery. The cottages where I was born were demolished in the 1930's and the piece of land became a play area, but it is now just a grassy space on the brow of the hill. I remember the chip shop at the bottom of Nightingale Street and the people who lived in that yard were called Mitchell, Riley and Marshall. The shop at the corner of Coventry Road was a Pawn Shop and had three brass balls over the door. On the opposite corner was a few small cottages. I hope this now answers all the questions raised regarding the Monkey, except I do not know how this nickname was arrived at. exhatter 27-09-2005, 06:04 So your cottage must have been where the sand pit was. Was your cottage between a garage ( as in a place to park a car not a gas station) with a flat roof and on the other side a big house with a big wall all the way around and big gates facing Darnall Rd? I think you are right about the Vine being up Vine St. I don't remember a pawn shop, but there was a corner grocery shop that sold bonfire lollies for 3d and a few doors down the beeroff, the butcher, the junkman going away from the pub. Opposite was a newsagents another butcher and one more shop I think. The Biney family lived in the first house up nightingale St next to the sandpit there was 3 generations of them. There was a boy in my class called Paul (Born in 56/57)who had 2 brothers that lived in the yard behind the chippy. Always let me ride his bike! Happy memories :-) Geezer 29-09-2005, 20:14 http://www.picturesheffield.com/cgi-bin/picturesheffield.pl?_cgifunction=form&_layout=picturesheffield&keyval=sheff.refno=s21767 multiparvo1 30-09-2005, 13:24 Originally posted by exhatter So your cottage must have been where the sand pit was. Happy memories :-) There was a terrace of five cottages I think and I was born in the end one (opposite end to Nightingale Street). Yes it would be where the sandpit was. Over the wall now is a motor cycle repair garage. Perhaps the 'big house' you refer to was Frederick Street Chapel - this had a wall round and big gates. There are some detached houses going away down Darnall Road towards Barnardiston Road. The grocery shop on the corner of Coventry Road came after the Pawn Shop had closed. The Meadow Pub on the opposite side of the road from where the Lyric was is now a 'Living Water' Church. I also remember the Biney's, I still see one of the younger girls occasionally. I think one of the boys, Al Biney, was a Boxer. Keanaz 30-09-2005, 13:47 I thought that "living waters" place was a tropical fish shop? and the other old pub further down, looked like a house next to Cyrils cafe is a now a refugee house I think? My mum's mate used to be the barmaid there, .........? multiparvo1 05-10-2005, 14:08 The Meadow Pub on Darnall Road is now a Christian Fellowship Church called 'Living Waters'. The old Industry Pub next door has a sign saying 'Rooms to Let'. Cyril's Cafe is now a Barber's Shop. The Chapel on Mandeville Street has been demolished and in its place is the most amazing large villa with balconies and electronic gates which would not look out of place in the South of France. It is well worth a visit to Darnall to view this palatial mansion. Morrison's Store has been demolished and a new Lidl Store is rising in its place, which I feel sure will be a boon to the long suffering residents of Darnall, the salt of the earth. The old Chapel inside the gates of Darnall Cemetery no longer exists, in its place is a flower bed. Lastly with great sadness I must report that Cravens Carriage Works on Staniforth Road is now reduced to rubble, only the stone pillars which were each side of the main gates opposite Frederick Street are still standing. I understand a new housing estate is to be built on this now empty space containing houses to rent and buy. Many of my now deceased uncles and cousins served their apprenticeships there and retired from there. bluebird62 08-05-2006, 18:21 Thats not the one in Darnall, the proper name was the cricketers [monkey] was just the nick name which the regulars gave it. that photo is of "the victoria" juliediane |
