View Full Version : Bored of the gym! Help!
cloudnine 03-04-2009, 20:46 Looking for an alternative to being a hamster in a wheel in the gym, maybe some martial arts or something different suitable for a female with not to much sporting ability... I have been browsing the internet but its quite hard to find the where and whens. I'm sure there's lots of other options out there.
emmalouise24 03-04-2009, 21:05 Hey chick! i have the perfect sport for you!!! ROLLER DERBY! its an all female sport which involves full contact ass kicking on roller skates. its so much fun and ive made so many great friends from doing it, check out our myspace page at www.sheffieldsteelrollergirls.co.uk. it doesnt matter if youve never skated before, we welcome any ability skaters or non skaters, we have skates and pads you can hire and we can help teach you how to skate. we practice at graves leisure centre on bochum park way sundays from 3 - 4.30 and are starting a thursday practice at usport near sheff uni 7 - 9. You dont have to be athletic or really to fit to do it either, its for all shapes and sizes. let me know if you would like to come along to any of the practices, you can even just come and watch at first if you want, then we'll get you hooked and you'll get your skates on the next time :o) message me if youre interested.
love n shoves,
em xxx

We do beginners kickboxing classes in the city centre.
77 Sidney street
in the town centre down the street from Decathlon sports shop and next but one to Niche nightclub.
Our beginners classes are suitable for new starters even those who are unfit or overweight or similar. (its OUR job to get you fit)
Monday and Thursdays are our beginners classes.
830-930pm
We also have an earlier class on a Tuesday 6-7pm at :
www.theforge-ma.co.uk
Ring 07775 914155 for further information.
Oh and its only £5 per lesson.
There is a good mix of lads and girls (of all ages LOL) and everyone is friendly and helpful.
cloudnine 04-04-2009, 10:06 Thanks everyone for your replies!
I'll definitely come and have a look at Roller Derby on thursday - looks ace, though sundays might be easier to get to generally because all the buses going to chesterfield / dronfield stop at Norton.
How much is it? I'm size five - will i be able to borrow any skates?
Kettlebels looks a bit strong, but kickboxing might be worth a try - do any girls go? Its all blokes on the website!

We have quite a lot of girls here , even one of our fighters is a girl Rachel Crosby. One of our Black Belts is Kathryn Mapley ( a girl) . We used to have a female British university champion Holly mason training with us till she moved to london as well.
The website is quite old and the pictures are from like 5 years ago. We are in a totally different gym now too.
Hi cloudnine, I run Parklife fitness which runs outdoor circuit classes in Graves park. The classes are mixed and mixed ability so everyone is welcome. The ethos of the class is hardwork made fun.
The classes meet at the animal car park off Hemsworth rd, Monday Wednesday at 19.00 and Saturday at 12.30. Its £3 and lasts 60 mins.
Hope to see you there
cloudnine 05-04-2009, 21:07 The outdoor circuit classes sound great - particularly now the weather's so nice. I've got so many options now I'm going to have to take them one at a time! Thanks Swisstc and also to chefkicker.
royalplaza 06-04-2009, 15:03 Can definately recommend Parklife Fitness. The classes are a great alternative to the gym and also if you struggle for motivation.

Can anyone join? my other halfs sister may like this.
Shes OK, however she has a slightly visible moustache. If she trains, I assume no one in the group will make an issue ?
For some reason she is paranoid about it.
I was in same situation a year ago then I joined the British Military Fitness group in Sheffield.
Here's their webbie:
