At the risk of asking the dumbest questions:
1. Do you have it on mute
2. Is the cable for the speakers in properly

when you mean checked the sound levels? you mean in the little speaker icon near the clock, things suddenly appear muted in there for no apperant reason, also check media players volume is up........and install ultrplayer or media player classic or winamp.windows players crap :)

If you have uninstalled and reinstalled your media player and it still don't work then....
Can you hear the system sounds? (that is the little beeps you get when an error message appears on the screen).
To test this:
1. Go to Control Panel (Start - Control Panel or Start - Settings - Control Panel)
2. Double click 'Sounds and Audio Devices'
3. Select the Sounds tab, there will be a little window called Program events. Highlight one of the sounds (Asterisk should be the first one). Play it (there should be a button to test them). Then you should be able to hear the little noise.
If you can't hear the system sound, check (again) that all the cables are plugged in, that the volume is set to an audible level and none of the speaker volumes are muted. If you change anything, try the above again and see what happens. If you hear system sounds, try the media player.
If this doesn't work and you can't hear the system sounds, you need to check Device Manager:
In Control Panel, go to System - Hardware and click on Device Manager (please note at this point that I use XP so the route to Device Manager may be different).
Expand the Sound, Video and game controllers tree. Do you see any red crosses over any of them? The one to look at first will say something like Vinyl AC'97 Codec Combo Driver (WDM).
If so, right click and select enable and try the system sounds thing again.
Do you see any exclamation marks over anything? If so, right click and go to Proprties. In Device Status, there may be a message saying whats wrong with it and in all likelihood it'll be something to do with the driver.
In which case, go to the Driver Tab. First, try Rollback Driver - which will restore it to the last known good setting. Restart the PC and try again. Alternatively, try Update Driver - if you have a CD that came with your speakers then have this handy, or you could try Windows Update to find it (you will be asked where you want to get the driver from).
If this doesn't work (i.e. you still have an exclamation mark), you may have a hardware conflict. I don't know if Windows 98SE has a hardware troubleshooting wizard - XP does - if it does go through that. On the General Tab of the Properties box you opened above, click Troubleshoot.
If this doesn't work, you could then try Uninstall. This will remove everything related to the sound from your PC and you will need to add it back again after you restart - to be honest this is a last resort.
Every time you do something, try the system sounds, if that works, try your media player.
If all this fails I'm clean out of ideas. (I'vehad this before and I can't remember what it was in the end - my PC is a nightmare so all the problems roll in to one in the end!)
Hope this helps.

Back to Basics....................
.............the speakers may have packed in!
Try and borrow another set of speakers and connect them.
OR take your speakers to another computer to try them there.
