Amsterdamned 10 #1 Posted April 3, 2009 (edited) Wednesday April 29th sees the highly anticipated return of New York's James Apollo to The Grapes. Once again with his band in tow following their memorable performance last year, they'll be joined by local boys WireTown and York's finest Boss Caine. Doors open at 8pm and entry will be £4. ***JAMES APOLLO*** Born at the foot of the Ozarks in Libertyville, Arkansas, James Apollo first hit the road at the tender age of 16. From an '84 Chevy, James and his young bandmates soon learned to live within the deep underbelly of rocknroll; gaining valuable lessons in life, love and theft, while sleeping in Mojave drain pipes, or spending new years day in a New Orleans jail for “just trying to help”. A soft voice and sharp ears have helped channel this "curiosity for the human condition". Apollo has been penning his snapshots of the fair and forlorn to create a handful of gorgeous records, as well as featured works in film, countless music compilations and any number of wicked gems in lowdown art as movement. With a savage tour schedule, Apollo rolls back and forth between the US and Europe, updating his hobo ways for the jetset. James Apollo currently hides his heart in New York City and was in the UK last November for the release of latest album 'Hide Your Heart In A Hive'. A favourite of BBC 6 Music's Tom Robinson, forthcoming EP 'Angels We Have Grown Apart' has also been picking up airplay from Elbow's Guy Garvey on his own 6Music show. "The album conjures up a set of haunted, western-rich folk with hints of Latin rhythms and Tom Waits-style cabaret." The Onion "James Apollo's songs are Americana in the truest sense: drenched in Civil War ghosts, "Steinbeckian landscapes" and the kind of loneliness known only to someone who grew up in Libertyville, Arkansas." The Sunday Times "For once, the press release tells few lies: you can believe the hype." Featuring Leon Lockley on lead vocal, guitar and mandolin, Dan Wilde on guitar and vocals plus Alex Hardy on bass guitar and vocals, they draw on a wide range of influences and have been busy working on new material in preparation for this their first show of 2009. http://www.myspace.com/wiretownofficial http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1195043134 ***BOSS CAINE*** Boss Caine have played all over the UK, with frontman GT Turbo performing solo/acoustic and as band which is the form we find them in tonight. They've played with the likes of Arlo Guthrie, Sam Baker, Alabama 3, The Handsome Family, Willard Grant Conspiracy, Guillemots, The Deadstring Brothers, Great Lake Swimmers, and many many more. Producing Americana and Alt-Country at it's finest, GT Turbo has always proved to be captivating on his previous solo jaunts at The Grapes. "...Tom Waits singing Ryan Adams if they had both had the good fortune to grow up in Yorkshire...." Fibbers, Barfly. "...Dylan-esque angst ridden lyrics...oozing charisma and individuality..played with raw brash style..." BBC N.Yorks. "Boss Caine are the real deal. They will rip your heart out and toss it back to you many songs later doused in whiskey, soul and more emotions than you know how to handle!" Northern Music. " These dark disciples of the damned drag the awestruck audience into their warped world of whisky, women and lost love, with a piece of pure, blues-drenched Americana."
