I wonder if someone can tell me how to get a national insurance number?
I am a foreign woman who is looking for work but I have been told by many employers that I have to get a N I number BEFORE i can start work.
This seems like a catch 22 situation, you cant work till you have the number but the employers wont give you a job till you get one?
Does anyone know a way round this?
Hello there Polish lady,
to apply for a National Insurance number you need to go to your local Jobcentreplus office.
You will need to complete an application form and attend an 'evidence of identity' interview.
If you got to the DWP website there should be some information on there about what you need to do.

You should also know that you CAN be employed if you dont have a national insurance number and that your new employer should be the one to help you get it, I've done this with many people who have worked for me in the past.
Incidently my girlfriend is also Polish (from Krakow) she was offered a job before we even left Poland. She had to fill out lots of paper work but there's absolutly no reason why you should be given any hassle by potential employee's so dont take any.

Some employers are very wary about taking people on without an NI number. Partly because they are responsible if they employee anyone who does not have the right to work in the UK.
But yes, they can take you on and they can help you with the application. There is a fast-track process for employers and if they need any advice they should also contact their local jobcentre plus office

I don't know if the rules are still the same but a couple of years ago you had to have a job offer before you could get an NI number, so people would just use a temporary number to begin with which is basically TN (for temporary number), your date of birth and then F for female and M for male.
Hey,
I would have pasted you the web-sites but I ain't allowed yet. Still I can help you by telling you to search Google for: national insurance number and the first two sites are very good!
I wish you luck!
