Hi does anyone know of a pet insurer that will pay vet fees for an existing problem,
we have a boxer x lab who is 2 years old, we recently took him to the vets with a knee complaint,
the vet said it was a creaky knee and prescribed some anti-inflamatorys, after a week there was not really any improvement so the vet said he would need an x-ray and anesthetic ,
he advised us to get pet insurance as it could be quite costly,

The trouble is i cant seem to find an insurer that will pay for a current problem, i can just about afford the xray which ive been told will cost £140, but then chances are he will need an operation on his knee.

Does anyone have any advice please or any idea how much an operation is likely to cost? :(

the vet is the best person to ask about how much it could cost

insurance for an existing condition (if such a thing exists) would be prohibitively expensive

talk to your vet about paying in installments

i have spoke to the receptionist and they offer a v.i.p plan where you get 20% off vets bills excluding anesthetic, this is around 12 pound a month, and you can spread the payments if the cost is over £150.

my OH seems to think we could be looking at thousands if he needs an operation

Its very difficult when problems strike like this
thats why the only way is to take insurance out when you first get a dog - not when a problem strikes - obviously - insurance companies take the stance that many people won't claim - to cover those that dog.

Sadly - because i have so many dogs - I can't afford to insure them all - so don't.
However, all 4 of mine have joint problems at some stage - and all different types. I work on the facct that over the years - i have probably saved enough on insurance policies to maybe cover a few vet bills - but certainly not all that i will have coming to me.

think about what the diagnosis is - and is it all necessary.
years ago with one of my english bulls. i was bullied into getting x-rays done at my own vets - then referred to a big place in rotherham somewhere that we paid over 500 for some x-rays and a jab in his joint to test the fluid. my old vet said they shouldn't have risked the chance of infecting a non infected joint with taking the fluid.

4 years later and 500quid lighter - he isn't on any treatment - granted he's fatter than he should be - but we didn't follow up on all the arty farty stuff they suggested and he runs like a good-un. but he could have been a vet insurance case dream i think.

what is actually wrong with him?

what is actually wrong with him?[/QUOTE]

hi the started not putting his back leg down properly, i had a look at his paw couldnt find anything, then i discovered a small scab at the top of his leg so i panicked and took him to the vets, the scab had nothing to do with his leg, while the vet was examining his knee he said he could feel some creaking/crackling? in his knee joint,
he was prescribed antibiotics (for the scab) and anti inflams for his knee, but they havent really made any difference, and it cost me £70
he still runs about like a mad dog :hihi:, goes for walks ect..
its only really when he is stood that you can tell he not putting his leg down properly
but the vet receptionist said if left untreated it may get worse!
