View Full Version : March Photography Competition: Vote here
ImpInaBox 01-04-2009, 15:46 It's 1st April so it's time to vote in our latest competition. The subject in March was 'Weather' and there were 18 entries. That's double the numbr we got in February - obviously we're a bunch of Fair Weather Photographers!
You can see the entries here (http://gallery.sunset-studio.co.uk/v/Mar09). Click on a thumbnail pic to see it enlarged (and don't forget page 2 - it's a while since we've needed more than one page). Alternatively try the 'View Slideshow' link to see them all without having to return to the gallery page every time.
And just keep in mind while you're out and about with cameras, the subjects for the next few months competitions are...
April: Creative Cranes
May: Technology
June: Expression
July: Urban Detail
August: Leading Lines
September: Street Life
October: Domestic Still Life
November: The Dark Side
December: Celebration
Nt the one I voted for, but felt the need to offer a special commendation to Rosebay Sunset - Stannington even though it didn't get my vote!
Very difficult this month, there are some great photos and I've managed to pick a top three but now to choose a winner.
jonni&jooli 06-04-2009, 15:40 Rosebay Sunset. The best I've seen since the "Three Helicopters".
garydickson 07-04-2009, 18:54 What's happened to the photos on the gallery? Some of them are no longer available 'full size' - Cornish Sunset, Sunset over Pollurian Cove, Thundery Skies and Snowsheep are just available at their thumbnail size...
Gary,
I'm trying to work on it as we speak. Something strange happened when I created the April gallery and can't figure out what.
Sorry! Dan
I've just tried rebuilding the images has this fixed it? :)
ImpInaBox 07-04-2009, 21:07 Fraid not - still seeing some at thumbnail size.
Have manually changed the permissions for the photos that were thumbnails, should be 600px now.
garydickson 08-04-2009, 00:39 Works for me now :)
For some reason when I created the April Gallery those that had been uploaded at 600px x whatever were reduced to thumbnails, and those that were uploaded at their original size still show the reduced version.
I can't find a thread for the April competition - have I forgotten to create one? :S

Looks like it Hook - and forgotten to update your signature too! :D
HarryMac 08-04-2009, 10:30 Some good quality entries here, best of luck everyone.
ImpInaBox 08-04-2009, 22:04 A result! Wow - that's the closest finish we've had so far - joint first for Fog and Rosebay and Cloud Explosion in third place only 1 vote behind!
First equal: FOG (in the Hope Valley)

Third: Clouds Explosion

Would the photographers like to step forward and own up?
Excellent photos this month. I loved Fog in Hope Valley and very nearly voted for it but I narrowly went for Snowsheep instead
astraman 09-04-2009, 06:53 Tremendous quality this month and good to see the competition run so close.
Well done to the winners.
Jivester 10-04-2009, 10:39 Well done to the winners. My vote went to Snow Sheep but it was a very difficult decision.
I got one vote this month which I am very pleased with (Blackpool Beach) Constructive criticism is very welcome.
I voted for snow sheep too - it was a difficult decision with about 4 pictures I thought were outstanding. I thought snow sheep would make a lovely Christmas card!
ImpInaBox 10-04-2009, 14:24 My vote went to Rosebay. I thought the composition was spot on and I loved the contrast between the sharply focussed stem on the left and the rest, the colouring and the starburst from the sun. I wondered whether I'd like to have seen the near stems on the right sharply focussed too but then decided that would have been distracting. Great shot.
I also really liked Clouds Explosion. I think I'd have tried cropping it to put the sun on either the top right or bottom right 1/3 point and maybe playing about with a multiple exposure from the original RAW to bring out just a little bit of detail in the land. (It was RAW wasn't it - please say you didn't shoot this straight to JPEG!)
FOG would have been my 3rd choice. I felt it was let down only by a bit of a lack of impact. It has the potential for a real wow shot but fell between too possible developments. Going wider, if that were possible, might have been more spectacular - especially in a panorama format to lose the boring foreground and sky. And going in tighter to the 'headland' in the middle and maybe getting some whipsy fog and landscape detail could have been good too. Nice shot tho.
And no - none of these were mine - I was very busy at the end of last month and just plain forgot to enter! :(
astridproll 11-04-2009, 10:20 Owning up to Rosebay Sunset - thanks for the votes and comments - also thanks muchly to Imp for the in-depth comments - clarifying a few issues I had with the shot.
( Nikon D40, Cokin A055, A128 )
Some great shots, and I honestly didn't expect to do as well. Cloud Explosion and Snowsheep were very good, clarity colour & composition wise.
My own vote went to Sunset over Pollurian Cove, I loved the colour and I particularly like square format shots.
Was looking forward to Aprils competition, but after an outing to the City Centre yesterday cranes (strangely for town) seem few and far between. Maybe it's the recession?
Congrats to Cloud Explosion & Fog - anyone owning up to these?
Eileen80 11-04-2009, 15:48 Hi everyone,
Clouds explosion is mine. I appreciate ImpinaBox critique, you are right, cropping the image would have improved it. I just didn't think about it and left it as it was. Unfortunately I must disappoint you by saying I shot this pic in jpeg as I was on holiday and my memory card was almost full. It's a shame, I know. Also, I took this one after a couple of months I bought my first DSLR and was not very good at using the camera and had no idea how to manipulate RAW images (not that I am any better now).
My credits to both Rosebay sunset and FOG.
I'm looking forward to April competition, although I have no idea how to achieve/find a creative crane. They all look so dull.
Thanks everyone
