Just had a look at the list of racers on William Hill's web site. Looks like some good racers this year.

Looking at a couple of quid either way on Flintoff, Butler's Cabin and another one.

Anyone know any good gambling sites that do Maestro cards without that annoying SecureCode nonsense?

What you having Corker?

Think im going to go for Snowy Morning m8 what about you?
25-1

Ran a great race for a young horse to finish just over five lengths behind Comply Or Die in the 2008 National. Had been many peoples choice for that race on the publication of the weights but had blotted his copybook with a poor jumping performance in his National warm up at Fairyhouse. Doubts about his ability to jump round Aintree proved unfounded and Willie Mullins charge could be very strong contender in 2009, although following a fine second at Punchestown after Aintree his handicap mark is now 17lb higher than when he ran in the 2008 National so he will have to find quite a lot of improvement. The start to the 2008/09 season saw Willie Mullins question if Snowy Morning would go for the National in 2009 but he appears to have come round to the idea and the nine year old gelding looks set to try and improve on last year's great effort.

Southern Vic Odds & Grand National Form
25-1

Winner of a Grade One race in his novice year over fences much was expected of Southern Vic but after a couple of seasons where his career has not really gone to plan and injury has intervened, he has been refocused on the Grand National. Obviously the stable knows exactly what to look for in a Grand National winner and they managed to keep Papillon's form well hidden for most of the season prior to his National win so it would not be a major shock to see this horse improve markedly at Aintree. He does have a touch of class about him for a horse rated in the low 140s but the stable have always maintained that he needs soft ground to be at his very best so it must be doubtful he will be fully effective at Aintree if the going is good. His jumping is also something of a concern given his exit over the National fences in the Becher in November and the bad mistake he made when appearing to have every chance when running against Black Apalachi at Leopardstown in February. A very interesting contender but one with lots of question marks.

State Of Play Odds & Grand National Form
17/1

Winner of the 2006 Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury and the 2008 Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby so not afraid to win a big race but can be a difficult horse to work out as consistency does not seem to be his strong point. Connections have come to the conclusion that he is at his best when fresh and four of his five wins over fences have come when returning after an extended break. His ante-post supporters must therefore have been glad Evan Williams resisted the temptation to run the horse at the Cheltenham Festival. Appears to have been given every chance to run a big race in the National with the weight allocated by the handicapper but his win at Newbury is as far as he as ever travelled so stamina must be taken on trust.

I said on another thread that if MALJIMAR gets in (which is looking increasingly unlikely now), he's got to have a massive shout off 10st 3lbs.

Big Fella Thanks does have a decent E/W chance, but does have a tendency to be held up for a run, which could mean he encounters traffic problems. He'll stay the trip, but will need to have a 'quiet passage'.

I'll have a proper look tomorrow and if I've got time, post a write up.

I've somehow managed to back the winning horse three times, betting each way on the National since 2000.
(2000 Papillon, 2003 Monty's Pass and Silver Birch in 2007)

The last time I had won before 2000 was back in 1987 when I backed the winner Maori Venture at about 25/1

I noticed Silver Birch is running again tomorrow (currently at 50/1) and wondered if it might do well again. I might have £10 each way on it.
Does anyone fancy it's chances?

There are always a million fools who put cash before conscience - I pray for the year that 10 jockeys die, then this whole vile farrago will be banned once and for all.

Horse racing is about 1 degree of separation away from greyhound racing, dog fighting and bear baiting.

Let's reintroduce children as chimney sweeps.

Sorry for being an animal fan with intelligence, sort of screws your argument doesn't it?

I'd like to hope that your 'tissue favourite', as it's known in the gambling world is most certainly the winner

Horses die on the Flat; horses die at stud; horses die in their paddocks: all unexpectedly.

Anyway, the main point of this reply is to say that if people want to discuss the rights (of which I think there are many) and wrongs (of which I also think there are many) of horseracing, or specifically National Hunt racing, please create a different thread, and don't take this off topic.

Stick your house on Butlers cabin OR kilbeggan blade ;)

Whoa boy'... you would stick your house on one horse or another?
Cmon which one is it?
I don't think any horse carrying too much weight over this distance will win, statistics prove this. I would say maximum weight of 10.11.
This assertion puts out of the running My Will, State of Play, Cloudy lane comply or die , last years winner.; and Butlers cabin is just a bit heavy.
So going on this my choices are from:
Parsons Legacy, only one pound over at 10.12 to come 4th Darkness 3rd
Irish Invader 2nd winner Brooklyn Brownie. This is if it stays dry, if wet it all changes, then I would go for Southern Vic 2nd with Zaben.
By the way I have never picked the winner in 45 years of trying.

But a fact....

He could of piped up about her looking like a bloke but he didnt, and is probably getting wasted somewhere with his mates chuckling to himself about her manly features.

And she'll be quite happily at home with her female lover not caring what people think about her manly features (she does actually live with a woman, by the way).

I like Clare Balding as a presenter of horseracing, but I do feel that she let herself down by 'picking on' Liam Treadwell. I thought that went beyond what should happen on screen, especially with a jockey who isn't used to the exposure of At The Races, let alone the world of BBC.

I have a manic dislike of gambling, for personal reasons.

I was, however, railroaded into doing the sweep at work.

I got the winner, and the one that came third !

I will give my winnings to BLESMA. It will only come to about £60 anyway.

A great race by all accounts :). Congratulations to the winners. 100-1. That's quite some price!

The bookies recession is over. They have made a packet.

How can I explain this rationally?

This race is wrong, it is cruel and it is only being allowed to continue because punters continue investing some of their money on it.

How do we change this?

By trying to influence people via forums like this (other options are tried) that if they stop betting on the race then it will be stopped.

How can you gain extra publicity?

By apparently making obvious mis-judgements like this, of course I knew the name of the horse but by putting it the way I did I knew it would get the response it got from you and the thread would continue.

It is absolutely nothing personal against anyone, I'm sure a lot of good people bet on this race but the reality is that Horses are dying in it year after year, and this fact needs publicising in order to try and get the race stopped.

Doubt it, shes often been the topic of ridicule and has actually commented on her face in which she stated looked `blokey`

Why pick on this one race? It is not the worst.

Quote from the above link below.
The four most hazardous of all the country's courses are run by racing's own governing body, the Jockey Club. These are Cheltenham, Aintree, Warwick and Carlisle. From just 54 days racing at Cheltenham, there were no fewer than 21 on-course deaths.
These are not up to date figures.

I think this this race is now a lot easier than it used to be and is not as dangerous. The tops of the jumps now just fall away when a horse breathes on them.
The main problem is owners entering horses that simply are not good enough or strong enough to cope with this race, just to say "I had a runner in the national".

The National fences have been lowered somewhat over the last few years to give most horses, as Saturday proved, as good a chance as any of getting round in one piece.

I don't think any amount of protest will ever get the race stopped, there's just too much revenue generated by it.

You're a good person and I can't honestly say I disagree with you - my feelings towards Horse Racing have become a bit more negative in the last year because I've been educated about how many horses die - but please don't embarrass us both by using the old "I deliberately did that cos I knew one of you on here would react to it and I was right" argument because you know the truth is that you just couldn't be bothered to get the name right.

I know you're making a 'general' point and like I say I'm starting to err more towards your viewpoint these days but I just think after making such a point about how "one horse will die today!!" once one does die and you want to mention it on here it would just be respectful to get the unfotunate fella's name right.

Anyway, we're going waaaaay off track so lets just put that minor slip-up behind us and get back to discussing the care/dangers that horse receive/face in being bred Horse Racing.

And now that the National is over for another year, and there is another thread in existence regarding animal welfare in horseracing here (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=471230), I think this one should be put to bed now.

Thanks everyone, and good luck to all, punters, jockeys, horses and objectors alike.
