View Full Version : I have been reliably informed..
(once again  ) that my dogs are 'not true dalmatians'.
'Oh really?' I said 'why would that be then?'
According to the chap informing me of this, they should have black spots and are therefore not 'true dalmatians' because they have brown spots...
Okay then...
When I explained that they were liver dalmatians just like you get black labs and chocolate labs, he asked me if I ever considered painting them :suspect:
Yep - of course, because I have nothing better to do with my time than paint each and every spot on each dog! Not to mention... I like liver spots!
I have nothing to do tomorrow and I have some bright green paint.
I promise I'll only paint the white bits.
Do you think that will shut the guy up?
If you work on it really hard you could have a rainbow dalmatian- wouldn't that be fun!
Like the frolic dog?
Thanks Scozzie, but I may pass on that ... I don't think Takara would be too impressed at being bright green... although Ed is quite hip for his age!
lol ok well then I guess Badger isn't a true sheltie being tri coloured lol
Why do some people think it's ok to force their opinion on what is and isn't right on others? Especially when it's offensive! Eeejjjiiitttt
Are you trying to tell me that the Frolic dog isn't a known colourway of the dally?
You shock me!
hels1977 01-04-2009, 07:28 I didn't even realise they were "liver" (as you informed me) until I visited the second time! :P They are much like the "proper" dalmation I know :P
They seemed pretty real to me!
I used to have a GSD up until recently who was the traditional type, you know, an obvious GSD, and was asked by someone if he was a cross - I informed the man "that he certainly was now" and he just walked off bewildered, he obviously didn't understand what I was saying!!!
You don't mind being asked do you, but being told is another thing!! I also used to walk him in a "gentle leader" and was ambushed by a little old man at Bakewell Show a couple of years ago, telling me I was wrong to bring a big dog into the Show with a muzzle on! It was a really hot day and my dog was panting with his mouth wide open and tongue hanging out. I soon informed him it wasn't a muzzle and that he could still bite if he wanted to........... Sometimes ignorance is bliss. I could go on all day about what people say before even thinking, about dogs..............:loopy::hihi:
LOL sorry medusa - have I burst the bubble for you there?
Hels - Takara often looks very dark but in sunlight she looks a beautiful liver colour: http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b10/Lottiepics/Takara/Tfaceshot.jpg
They're real enough for me... I have to deal with them when they're emptying bins or desperately trying to run alongside horses (as per the breed purpose) on walks as well as having to keep them entertained and picking up their whoopsies - doesn't get any more real than that!!
Anniec - I wasn't particularly offended... I tend to get it a lot, it's only that they are wrong

 Yep - it's when you're told you're wrong and you so obviously know better.
I have been asked if Takara (in the picture in the above post) is a pointer cross
Someone else asked me if she's a cross between a black and a liver dalmatian... well actually yes she is, but she takes after her dad and is liver - just some of her spots look quite dark
I've also had people come up who I've not been too comfortable with and don't particularly want them talking to me or fussing the dogs and when they've said 'do they bite?' I've answered 'not usually...'
They tend to leave me alone pretty quick
twibstix 01-04-2009, 10:44 Used to have a miniature poodle whose hair I used to cut each fortnight. As a result he often times looked "odd". Dragon takes mine out for me whilst I am at work (we both walk them in a morning then I walk mine at night too, in between obedience, flyball, gundog and agility training). She got that sick of "Whats the poodle crossed with?" she eventually replied "a poodle" - some folk just could not work out what being a poodle x poodle made Basil!!!!!!
Also, we get asked what Teal is as she has a white blaze and a touch of white on her paws (she is full yellow (Fox Red) lab).
And, not many can work out what Chase is (Australian Kelpie) - most have her as a GSD x pass!!!!
Know how frustrating it is, but cannot, for the life of me, see how ANYONE, even the preverbial blind man on that galloping horse, could mistake either of yours as not true dalling dogs!!!!!
Twibstix I asked your mum what Teal was  I am so ashamed!!!
I can see where the confusion can come with Eddy. The only way he actually represents a dal is his spots- he's the complete wrong shape, bless his spotty socks but you've met Takara - there's nothing not dal about her!

Oh the shhhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaammmmmmmmmmmmmmmmme eeeeeeee!!!!!!!

Met Eddy too, dally through and through, just cos he is a different shape indeed!!!!! I remember Takara very rarely deigning to lower herself to speak to me, but liking Dragon - no accounting for taste there T dog.
I wouldn't fret about it- there are very few people who don't recognise Mol as a GSD, but lots of people seem to think that all GSDs are trained attack dogs (and that's even when she's wagging her tail with her ball in her mouth) so I've kind of written off the opinions of 'Joe Public' as just not quite right.
A while ago we met a beautiful little Shiba Inu on a walk and apparently I was the first person in ages who didn't ask the owner why they had a fox as a pet. I rest my case.
Ahhh does it matter that they ask what your dog is they are only showing an interest! The best way to learn in life is to ask questions. If they try and tell you what your dog is that's different.
I have a small but very handsome Dogue De Bordeaux (not that I am biased) who could be a cross. I don't know I didn't get him as a pup and even the vets are confused due to his small stature and curly tail!! People constantly question me about him (its rare that I go for a walk and not get stopped) it really doesn't bother me he's just my dog that I love, and I got because I couldn't leave him with people who didn't bother to walk him!
Though it was funny when my Dad came up to look after him. I warned him what walking Max was like he was skepitcal. When I returned he couldn't believe people had actually stopped their cars to get out and ask about Max.
The main question is where can I get a DDB that size. Is someone was breeding small DDB's they would make a fortune lol
Though on the flip side I often get told he is a banned dog (had that shouted at me in the street more than once) and that does annoy me.
I would post a picture but I have no idea how lol
Of course I don't mind if people ask me questions!
I would, and have spent a good deal of time telling people about dalmatians and when one person asked me about them (because he was hoping to get one) whilst I was out walking, he ended up joining the entire walk with us while I answered his questions.
I just find it highly amusing when people tell me (and they don't ask, they TELL) that my dogs can't be real dalmatians because they're the wrong colour! It always sends me away chuckling...
I often get asked 'are you going to breed them together? You could make a fortune'
Hmm... well - one guy quickly shut up when I told him that's very difficult due to Eddy's lack of balls!
cuddlycats 01-04-2009, 14:43 Completely off topic but what is that harness and collar Takara is wearing on her photo? Is it a non pull one?
In the photo, no it's not - it's a normal trail style harness made by Rogz...
She does walk better on that than a collar though because it's more comfortable than just a collar on her neck. :)
Plain Talker 01-04-2009, 15:28 Are you trying to tell me that the Frolic dog isn't a known colourway of the dally?
You shock me!
damn, cusses and other generalised swearwords...
I had been saving up for one of those rainbow dallies...
Drat!
Suppose I'll have to settle for only having the destruct-o-pup for the time being! :hihi:
Lotti, do your two ride around on fire engines?
If not, can't be real dalmatians, or is that just an American thing?
The whole fire mascott thing is more of an American thing although I think it was used here too... this is what we do here:

http://britishdalmatianclub.org.uk/forum/album_pic.php?pic_id=1691
:D
However - as I don't do carriage dog trials - this is how I do it with my dogs!
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b10/Lottiepics/TandScooter.jpg
(I usually ride on it, with the dog running alongside, but obviously, I can't get a pic of that!)
pets@home 01-04-2009, 18:50 lotti why dont you start a new line in your shop " dog discuise suits " then i could have one that would make my american bulldog look like a yorkie lol
Grandad.Malky 01-04-2009, 19:05 Wiki -
The most common colors for Dalmatians are black or liver spotted on a white background. Other spotting colors, though not permitted for showing, and rare, are blue (a blue-grayish color), orange or lemon (dark to pale yellow), brindle, mosaic, tri-colored (may appear on any other coloured spots), and two-toned.
Although other color variations do exist, any color markings other than black or liver are a disqualification in purebred Dalmatians
NotQuiteN00b 01-04-2009, 19:27 That's bizarre. I thought it was general knowledge that liver spotted dalmations exist. People can be so weird.
Hmm, the Kennel club are ok with black or liver spots, but not other colours including tricolour.

End of the day - who cares!
I don't get why people need to make such statements anyway.
I know very little about exact definitions of a breed but that doesn't matter - surely what matters is that you have a beautiful and loving dog and if one spot is the "wrong" size or colour by someone's definition it doesn't really matter a hoot.
I love blue dalmatians and if one was to happen to come my way, I wouldn't say no! They look absolutely gorgeous - if you google them.
I have spent a little while searching through Takara's spots in different lights and brushing the hair a different way because some look darker than others and I wasn't sure if she was a tricolour, but nope - they're all brown. Even the only one that looks really black (and if only one spot is a different colour it makes them a mosaic).
The full white dallies aren't really white they're a very pale lemon but the reason the other colours (blue, orange, lemon and brindle) aren't accepted for show (they can still be KC registered dogs they just wouldn't do very well in a show) is because it's actually just a lack of pigmentation. The blues are blacks with a lack of pigment, the oranges and lemons are livers with a lack of pigment. Tricolours - not really sure why they're not accepted...
But I do love the blues and brindles even if they're not 'right'!
(once again  ) that my dogs are 'not true dalmatians'.
'Oh really?' I said 'why would that be then?'

Did you tell him about the Dalmations that have white spots?
Now that would have really messed with his mind!:hihi::hihi::hihi::hihi:
In Uppers 03-04-2009, 09:55 So Lotti, with this colour thing in mind - my springer can't be real as he's liver & white and not BLACK & WHITE.
:hihi::hihi::hihi::hihi::hihi::hihi::hihi:
Ah... so you learn something new everyday In Uppers! You'd better take him back to his breeder
Funnily enough I've spoken to people with B&W springers who have been told their springers aren't true springers because they're not L&W!
scoop it would, wouldn't it!!
