I seem to remember not long ago that during the summer quite a lot of companies employed students for the summer holidays.

Do they still do this and if so which ones are looking for labour this year?

If i were you i would go to an employment agency, asking for temp work. Might not be the best rate of pay or job, but will tie you over for the summer.

Quite a few retail places experience a fall off in trade during the summer months. You'd be better off not wasting your time with them.

If there's somewhere you want to work, have a word with one of the staff about what it's like working there before you apply. (from personal experience, let them know why you're asking so many questions. I once did this ( asking questions and the victim was clamming up, then she realised I might be a Head office Spy and suddenly came out with a list of H.O people who were "really helpful" in her opinion.

Most of the chain stores - Boots, Superdrug, Marks and Spencers etc - take on temporary staff for the summer :) During my degree I worked as a summer temp at most of these places ;)

EDIT : The employment centre at Meadowhall may be a good source of information.

Head for Meadowhell, speaking as an employer, many of us need summer temps to replace people who have gone home from uni' for the summer, we are then usually happy to transfer people within the company to different branches whilst at uni' and back again for the hols and so on...

Go to the jobcentre and get yourself on the 'clerical register'.

Employers often contact the jobcentre (including civil service employers - home office, jobcentre plus, DWP, DfES etc) for temporary clerical staff throughout the year, but particularly in the summer when a lot of people are on holiday.

The advantage of using the jobcentre is you'll get paid the full going rate for the job, where agencies often charge the employer a higher than average amount and pay you less than average.

Ant marketing will, but I suspect since they have started advertising heavily on this site you may have to PM me to get an acurate description of how awefull their treatment of employees is.

I know someone who worked at the highest level for MR Hinchcliffe - and what was observed was more than concerning - thats another story...

The core issue comes from the front lines - but trickle down from on high...
Because there is a fear management structure - what you also find are people (Specifically management) who have risen through the ranks - by way of nepotism or "Selling ability" - placed in a position of power - Without A: Any training - B: Relatively little authority C: Transparant incapability to carry out there duties.
What this then creates is a culture of self justification, denial and passing the hot potato -
Intelligent people can see through this and run away, leaving behind an underskilled and reactive management structure - which , guess what? Results in one of the highest Attrition rates in the industry! And defo the highest turn over of staff in south yorkshire per head as a percentage.

but hey - Mr Hinchcliffe is one of the wealthiest individuals in Yorkshire!
His brothers in jail for embezlement...but thats irrelevant!?????

Anyway - good luck in your carrer path...
I hear the quays are lovely at this time of year though....

I think the comments above are a little strong, although the person you know would be very keen to stay unknown as if what you said is true, then he / she may be out of a job soon!!! Again, i'm sure many people on this website have had many experience at ANT good and bad, although the ratio is probably (bad to good) 30:1 in terms of comments on this site.

I'm interetsed in the comment regarding the "Intelligent people can see through this and run away" and possibly want to question all the people who have worked at ANT to state if they have seen or know any of these people? I'm sure ANT does have good people and maybe it's time they got recognised and commended for putting up with the fickle world of ANT, whether they are still there, or have run away! I'd also like to hear off people who have run away? It's been a while since the ANT Marketing topic was stirred up again, let's name and shame the bad ones, and big up the people that actually helped us through the pain!!!

Lets hear it for them?

steph - i suggest you read messages before you respond - the bit about "Past-previous-past tense..." means the guy doesnt work there anymore!
and i see no response to defend the FACT that the business HAS the highest attrition rate in South Yorkshire!

There is no case to argue here.

.shu.ac.uk/services/ssc/careers/network/index.html add the www to the front.

I use to look for summer jobs there. You need a username and password if you are not at the Hallam University though. Just give them a call and they will give you a username and password if you are from a different uni.

I have a username and password that you can use if you send me a PM (I don't want to give it out openly on a forum)
