View Full Version : Dr Feelgood at the Black Swan
Broncobribe 31-03-2009, 16:10 I remember seeing the Feelgoods at the Swan in 1975 i think.
It was one of my favorite gigs of all time. They also played the City Hall around the same time.
Was anyone at the gig? and can anyone tell me the exact dates of the two gigs,as i'm writing a book about Sheffield in the 70s.
Cheers.
scargill 31-03-2009, 16:32 Went to the City Hall gig, where they were supported by Mink De'Ville, the Feelgood gig from the city hall appears on one side of a live album.

I was at that gig too, it must've been after 1975 because I didn't move here until '76. My friend and I went for a curry after with Lee Brilleaux.

It was definitely Mink DeVille supporting when I saw them, maybe they played City Hall twice?

fuddyduddy 31-03-2009, 19:47 Yeh I was there, watching Wilco Johnson floating across the floor, with the deadpan face and knockin out the guitar sound with his own unique style
shanes teeth 31-03-2009, 20:49 The live album of a city hall gig is Stupidity.

One of the great live albums from anyone. Actually the only album of theirs that I now own.
It's sad to see a pub band of the same name still knocking about, with not a single member of the original line up involved. Can't be helping the legacy of one of the great British RnB acts.

Never mind still in the band-there's only Wilco still alive!Down By The Jetty is still one of my most played albums.Still sounds as good now as it did then.

That's where I've just been!It seems I've been sold a pup!
Bloomdido 31-03-2009, 21:56 I was at the city hall gig and I recall it was 'albertos y trios paranoias' that supported the feelgoods. I assumed this was to form the Sheffield half of the live album. I ended up supporting Wilko a couple of times in recent years. Little did I know then. I can't even remember why I went to see them.
Alastair 31-03-2009, 23:14 Yeah your right lectro, sept 76 and oct 77.
I went to one of those gigs, no idea which.
Broncobribe 01-04-2009, 10:28 Thanks for the replies, still not got the exact date for the Swan but it must have been in 1976. I went to both City Hall gigs as well but can't remember who supported them.
While on the subject did anyone see a band called Brewers Droop at The Swan? bit earlier probably 73ish, also saw them at the Bardney festival 72 i think.
During their song 'It's not the meat it's the motion' they brought a giant p**is on to the stage.

It would have been 74 or 75 that Feelgood were at the Swan, as it was while I was still in the 6th form. Didn't go myself - one of the Swan concerts I missed at that time, but my mates were raving about the "Mad guitarist, standing behind the curtain and machine gunning the crowd" during Riot in cell block no. 9. That was a small stage, and Wilco covered most of it.
Broncobribe 02-04-2009, 11:14 Just done a history search and the Feelgoods played the City Hall three times in 1975 and twice in 1976, so it could have been 75 when they played the Swan.
I'll have to do a re-write.

I think the first City Hall gig was fairly soon after the Swan one. I was at the 'Stupidity' gig (May 23rd 75 apparently http://www.drfeelgood.de/fg_hist.htm), and I think the support act were indeed the Albertos.
Odd-jobs 02-04-2009, 11:32 Saw them at the free Heineken festival in Don Valley bowl just before Lee Brilleux's death, Smoked like a chimney on stage.
Fantastic show still got the Feelgood badge and {very tatty} T shirt.

I think we're finally getting there, thanks for the info, as i said i'll have to re-write it for the book.

The Albertos were definitely the support act that night. They kept claiming that they could hardly move round the stage because of all "Dr Hook's" kit (the irony being that Feelgood had only the basic three or four small amps - hardly any kit at all)
Highlight of their set was Hendrix at Woodstock playing the "Theme from The Archers", and a Bob Marley rip-off "No Legs - Me Cry"
Brilliant night all in all, as Feelgood were on fire!!
