I remember Charlie he lived in the same yard as my husband his name is Goddard and so did Mrs Yates. I think his brothers name was Billy, Dave lived at 182 Alfred rd until we married in 1965. He had a younger brother Stephen and other brother and three sisters
We have many happy memories of our younger days, and Charlie and Billy are among them when we go down memorie lane. Do you remember Florrie and Nudger Wild. plz reply.

Hi cliffsharky,
The central was where the skating rink was I think on Zion Lane near Peace Gardens. Maybe you are to young i was born in 45 but wots ten years, I can assure it was very popular in the sixties and I am realy surprised your'e the only reply I have had.
I suppose many are to old to care now and it's a shame, when it stayed open on unutil twelve thirty on New Years Eve it was like a nite club to me and my friends.
I lived when the down Alfred rd until 1968 when there was the house clearence, and now live in Ecclesfield and I have never known happiness
like I did in the sixties. keep in touch LGX

I first left Attercliffe in 61 and returned several times over the following few years to my mothers on Newhall Road. I can remember the roller skating rink on Zion Lane but can't recall ever seeing or hearing about it becoming The Central?....
I am curious now I must admit.

Hi Joan1, no one seems to remember the Central and we all had sucha good time bopping to the live groups. Screaming Lord Such, Dean Marshall and his deputies, a guy called Jonnie White would sing and many others. They were great times if it was open until twelve you were safe to walk home, unlike today.
I recently met up with an old friend and we had a laugh talking about the fun we had. We never bothered about the pubs , although our boyfriends at the time did.
I lived near Alfred Rd and married a lad from the same area, let me know which end of Newhall Rd you lived, we just might no one another.
Keep in touch LG..............

I remember both the 'skates' and the central that came after. It was just before Zion Lane on the left and upstairs over a furniture store. I first saw Vance Arnold and the Mighty Avengers (Joe Cocker) there - must have been around 1962/63. When it was the 'skates' saturday afternoon used to be the highlight for me and my buddies. Does anyone remember the older (to us) couple that used to figure/skate dance together sometimes then? The floor used to clear for them and everyone watched. People had some respect back then!

I used to know Dougie and didn't know he had died. He used to live close to the bombed out house that had the letters ARP on it and was across from the Liberal Club. It was next to the building site where the nursery used to be in the 50's. For a while there he dated Beryl Newall from Brightside - don't know what became of it though.

Now I know who you are, always with Roger B outside rosies shop laughing, good days pete. I can remember my first indoor toilet, heaven to be able to pull the flush without it being frozen in the cold. no more going across the yard with the bucket hoping no one would see you.But if I am honest there seemed to be more caring neighbors more helpful if anyone was ill. not like today. you never see mothers turning the skipping rope for the kids. playing kikcan, delavio, kiss catch, mind you no one ever kissed me, even though I never ran that fast.ahah. AND HERE WE ARE USING OUR PC.

Vicarage Road was where the school clinic was. I left school in 57 and to be honest, the dentist then has saved me a lot of money over the years. He could have pulled em out, but he saved them and they have served me well over the years. My dentist was a Rolf Harris look-a-like called Mr. Bloomfield and his nurse, (who he married,) was called Joyce if I remember rightly.

[Hi Gethro/ I remember Maurice Wilson and I think I can remember Margaret. Did she used to hang out with Marie Petty (who lived in Steven Haywards yard) and Linda Haslam who lived in the same yard as thr Lemanskis or with the girls off Bodmin St? That yard was right across the street from us. Mrs Lemanski was the daughter of (?) Brown who owned the little converted shop on the street and they had a son - Stefan. Are Sonny and Kath Wildgoose the parents of David Wildgoose? Dave and I were good buddies and I have been trying to find him for many years now. I heard that he and quite a few people from the area moved the new housing on Greenland Rd, but it's difficult to track people down from here in British Columbia. The Wildgooses used to live in the same yard as the Willets. I remember Mick - his dad used be a very good piano player. Hope this is not too many questions for you Gethro and thanks for the information you've already passed on.]

[Hi again mickr. we were the house next to Wallers, as a matter of fact it was their son Bill who l left England with to hitch-hike around the world arrived in N Zealand two years later, been hear ever since. Jack must have left about four years later than me, l left in 1956. l remember the Bodfields and Richardsons, l believe the Petty's lived next door to them, l always fancied lrene Petty. where abouts in Ausie is Jack,? give him my regards he may still remember me, though its over fifty years ago. my name is Pete Beardshaw]

Marie and Irene Petty are my aunties, my mum being Alice Petty. The Petty family lived at 21 Beall Street (I think!!). I was born in 1955 and mum, dad and I lived with my grandma and grandad until around 1961'ish. I did have a short stint at Huntsmans Gardens School before leaving but can't remember much about it. Can't remember what number the Richardsons lived at but we moved from Beall Street around the same time as them and they became our next door neighbours at our new address. Unfortunately both Jean and Brian Richardson have now passed away but they have a son called Russell.

We're looking for Paul Wood(s) son of Dennis and Marjory (nee) Cannon.

He had 2 brothers Peter and Andrew and a step sister Pat.

He was born/lived at 46 Swan Street, and lived in there at least in the 50's.

Hi cliffsharky
Where did Titterton come from... Did you go to Huntsmans then? on other Titterton street and I lived second house on left - used to be able to see over into back of Cutlers pub from our back yard. Those were the days, drifting from Cocked Hat to Cutlers to Brit!!! The other day I was only talkin about us kids on the street... me and my friends (we were about 8) were nicely playin house in her back yard when this lad next door to her was givin us grief... I answered him back and he threw a stone at me... I ducked and it broke my friends house window.. and I got told off for duckin!!! My dad had to pay for and replace the glass... now thats not right....
Remember playing "Four wheels" when it was justing turnin dusk - someone had run to the Worksop Road whilst we got hidden.
Remember starting in the infants in Huntsmans - got a brand new navy blue coat and when I went to coe hom someone had nicked it and left an old scruffy thin cardi.... heartbroken I was!!! I remember Johnsons living in that first house on that part of Titterton (Joan had newsagents on Worksop Road) but cant remember anyone else on that side.

Hi tan . Henry titterton was a trades unionist and temperance campaigner who live around 1870s but also know for growing fine rhubarb on the old market garden . what the old huntsman garden school was built on . only lived on titterton st till I was 3 then moved to fell rd but my grandad and aunt dot lived there till 70s so kept calling in and cocked hat with my dad . Them days I had to sit in kitchen while he had a drink or 2 .Sure henry titterton would have frowned on that. Used to go on all cocked hat fishing match's when I was a lad great dads.:P:hihi::suspect:

What was your aunty dot's surname an your grandad - I must know them if they lived there up to 70's.
I have some old maps somewhere, Cliffsharky, when I was researchin my Attercliffe roots for a course at night school some years ago and I remember seeing some gardens around what became Titterton Street. Wished I'd know the stuff about Henry Titterton an his rhubarb then though, it would got me some more marks!!

Hi MARY POPPINS, Your"e right ,Ronnie Dukes, Ricky Lee & familly did live in a bunglow in Brisworth. It was no 1 Broadway,(he told us he always wanted to be on Broadway,!!!). I was one of the gang of four bricklayers which built Rons bunglow sometime in 1959.He was a real great guy, used to come up to the site every couple of weeks or so,just to see how things were going, at that time he had a great big Ford Fairlane coupe, shocking pink in coulor!!!!. He would stay for a while, then give us all a ten bob note (50p) each!.(you cold get 8 pints of Stones Bitter for that then!!!!!.) The gates with the music notes on were made extra wide cos" of the big car he had. He also had a small personel gate to the side also with music notes on. I actually built those brick pillars while Ron was watching where he gave me an extra ten bob note. Great guy!.

Just wonder if anyone remembers my nanna and grandad, Bill and Ivy Glasby? They lived on Hoban Street and my grandad worked at Brown Baileys until about 1969. They had one son, Don (my Dad) who sadly died earlier this year. My nanna's maiden name was Whitehead and her family also came from Attercliffe.

Hi, I'm not sure but my mum and grandma both worked at Brown Bayley's and I think I remember the surname Glasby being mentioned. Sorry I don't know anything more than that. My grandma was Annie Denial and my mum is Audrey Bell (nee Denial).

My wife lived on Clement Street: one of a family of four girls and a boy. Her dad worked at Brown Bayleys as a Chief Electrician - Arthur Smith.
She went to Coleridge Road Schoool then reluctantly to Hinde House.
She used to knock about with a group of three other girls and by a remarkable coincidence met up with one of them on a Cruise Ship. They hadn't met for twenty years then found themselves stood next to each other on the party to celebrate the last day of the cruise.

Although researching my family history I found my granddad was born onZion Lane would love a picture of the housing but none in the archives
I remember Zion lane it was full of pain. The clinic was ware they jabbed you with six inch needles and the dentist was a man on a mission to frighten kids to death the evil get. If he was alive today he would be locked up. It was twenty year's before I next went to a dentist because of him.

My Mum was brought up on Paget Street. She always used to tell me how she loved living there. I think loads of her family lived around there, like Alfred Rd. Her uncle was Joss Wild who was mentioned earlier in the thread.

Hi Tangerine
I am David Johnson and we are the ones who lived at 41 Titterton street the one on the corner. I remember all the games we used to play including Kick Can. Run around the Lump (along your bit of Titterton Street down the gennel in the middle and back along Worksop Road finishing up the hiil back at Titterton Street). Others who used to play with were David Wade, Kenneth Sidaway, Marjorie (his siter) Jacqualine Parker, Julie Hatward, Anne, Derek Capes the Graysons, etc, etc. Mum did have the newsagents on Wrksop Road until she died in 1981 and Dad just never opened it again.

Yep the same one although I would say that it was more of a news van than a newsagents. I remember how cold it was during the winter at the corner of Worthing Road, but met some lovely and facinating people (good old Attercliffe characters) and have some very funny and interesting stories to tell

Hi to Tangerine. coudn't help myself commenting on Titerton Street. I was actually born on Titerton Street in 1950, don't know what number but we moved to Pitsmoor when i was only 3 months old so can't remember anything about it. My dads parents lived across the road, can't remember the name of the street but they were called Johnson (i assume because that was my dads name, but you never know in those days. he married my mum (Elsie) whose maiden name was Sheperd she was a divorcee and her family lived down the cliff as well, again i can't remember which road.

Les Johnson

Don,t know if i have the right era for you but it,s interesting to see those street names cropping up on here.

Hi Tangerine. I was born on Titerton Street in 1950, but we moved to Pitsmoor when i was 3 months old, Frippa aka David johnson is my cousin.
My mothers name was Elsie Sheperd a divorcee with a son Graham, my dad was Les Johnson
(needless to say i was named after him) I just wondered if you (or anybody else on this board) new either of my parents if you are of that era. I have been trying to piece together who my mother was married to 1st time around (Grahams father) unfotunately neither of them are alive now and never spoke of things when they were alive.

Hi Les
My dad was Clem Johnson and Mum Joan. I know that dad had 5 brothers plus 2 I think sisters. The ones I know of are Florence and Nora who lived in Oaks Green with Brother Mark and wife Hannah living 2 houses away. Both of them never married. Another brother Joseph died in the 1st WW at the Somme aged 17 (I still have his commendation), I also remember visiting Les and George when I was young. I lived with Dad and grandma at Titterton street. Other relatives in the area were cousin Anne, Julie who both lived on the other end of the street. The Johnson family in Attercliffe apparentely goes back to the 14th century. The vicar Robert De berry told me this when he organised the centenary of the Attercliffe Church (behind William and Glyn's bank) in 1981. All the birth, death and marriage certificates adtibng back to 1860s have a variety of Attercliffe addresses e.g. Worksop Road, Chippingham Street, Britnall Street, Oakes Green, etc. I hope this helps

Hi David. Any information on my parents before i or my sisters were born would be brilliant as we are trying to piece together our familyls history.
I noticed you put in your message "my dads 1st wife" now i know my mother was a divorcee, but did my dad have a previous marriage as well ? or was that a typing error on your part.

If you could contact who ever you know that could fill in some gaps that would be good.

Hope you are keeping well and look forward to hearing from you.
I also have a private email address if you wanted to use that, as follows

Hi Carlb
When I started to sell the papers all the buildings including the newsagents were mainly derelict, but a few were still occupied e.g. the corner shop and cafe, and the houses below-down the slope.
When they finally demolished the newsagent I bought a van and moved next to the garages just down the road.

There is a connection with the Ashworths, but looking to find anyone who knew the Butlers, may have been called the butler twins, or the twins. Circa 1950's. Also on the same street they used to live in (we think it was cottingham st, maybe wrong?) was the christian family. Also my aunt lived there for a while she married a Hudson.

Mum said she used to go to the radical club, and the steelworks nearby...which steelworks was this ?

Anybody know or can give any info.

Ah it's all coming back to me now, the last time i saw you was in Ranmoor when i had the newsagents there, remember? i think you were working in Fulwood at the time.
the irish family next door were the Roches, there were four brothers Eugene,Vincent, Michael and the youngest Steven, the older brothers were always p*****, hows your Tommy and your sister Lynn and if my memory is intact didn't you have an older sister as well?.
I'm living in Brinsworth now, been here since 1966

yes, my name is Carrington although i dont remember the getting drunk bit, probably because it has happened many more times since then, terrible thing to say i know:)
the questions I have are, where were we? who were we with?and more to the point what happened after?

The lads i lknocked around with in those days were Pete Beresford, and two brothers Denis and Glenn, sadly i cant remember their surname, are you one of these lads Cliffboy?

Hi Glenn, my name is Jackie and I know just who you're talking about-though I haven't seen them for a bit. The brothers were Dennis & Glenn Thompson - Glenn doesn't live far from me but not sure where Dennis lives.

Hello Jackie, as much as it pains me to say it and also embarrassing too, I dont recall you from my childhood, did you live on Shortridge Street too?, and did you go to Huntmans Gardens school.

And does the name Anita Taylor, or her sister Pat, mean anything to you?
