I grew up on Parson cross we moved to Yew Lane in 1961 when I was 3 years old I went to Mansel infants, Mansel juniors then on to Yewlands .I have many happy memories of
my time there and still have a few mates that live on the estate , I used to ride my bike
round the track that Bushbaby and his mates made (didnt know at the time that he was
responsible for it) Me Nigel Cawthorne and Martin Lee also played football on the grass that was in the middle of it there wasnt a blade of grass on the track for years .
Bushbaby is telling the truth about Mick Smiths Van I remember it well (I knocked about with Young Wriggo ) You were quite a character in them days Bushbaby do you remember a new Chinese take-away on Chaucer Road and a song by Ray Stevens called
"The Streak", Were You barred from said take-away?
miami now 30-03-2009, 16:25 My cousin lived on Yew Lane Veronica Harrison, iv been trying to find her for years no luck she married a Barry Fox, dont know if the names ring any bells let me know. thanks

Cocked this one up - see next one.
I lived on Milnrow Road (6) from 1958 to 1977 and have only fond memories of the area. The cycle speedway track was behind our house - we used to play footy in the centre of it.
My blind granddad used to come up from St Dunstans in Brighton and stay for a couple of weeks each summer and I had to take him on to the Tavern every dinner time and get his dinner ready for when he came back. Someone always brought him back but I never knew who.
I haven't been back since my Mum and Dad moved to Walkley about 15 years ago so its interesting to read these posts and find out what's happening. Bushbaby especially - I think we kicked a ball around on the odd occasion.
Bushbaby 14-04-2009, 12:45 Did anyone play “Bullroar” like we did? (I think it probably had dfferent names in different eras)
It was usually played in the build up to Bonfire Night, especially on those evenings devoted to mischief.
Basically, one had to tightly pack the bottom opening of the largest drainpipe of a house, with newspaper, and set fire to it. As the heated air drafted up the pipe, it caused a howling sound (hence “Bullroar”) which resonated through the building and brought neighbours out to investigate.
The long autumn evenings would just fly by….

Boni I grow up on Milnrow Rd but I lived in that middle section opposite a corn field that they later built flats on, I lived there 1946 - 1965

Hi Joto,
I remember the flats being built, and I used to play in that cornfield - cut my knee pretty badly on some glass there and had to have nine stitches in it.
I see you're in Canada these days, the girl (my niece) on the front cover of my book lives in Calgary, took the picture when she came back for a wedding out in Hathersage.

Yeah, I'm quite sure I know you. Your nickname, "Bonj" is a kind of spoonerism I think, and like me, you went to grammar (albeit a different one). Great to hear from you - I'm sure you've got a few good stories hidden away....
If you look back, you'll find my memories of our mutual friend Ian Whittaker somewhere - and I think you knew him quite a bit better than I did.
Ian lived right by the garage and you were next door, or very near I think. Bonj = John Birkett swap the J and B around. I think it was Stephen Broughton (Tam) that came up with that.
Yes, looking back through the posts here the ones about the man who followed his biro around and chuntered to himself stand out - you see them all the time nowadays only its a mobile they're staring at. Funny how things come round.
Good to hear from you and now I've found it I'll keep posting as things come back to me.
Would you be the "Batt" that worked for T.N.T. at Y.P.N. at Leeds??
Yeah Dogsbody thats me,I am now working for Ceva Logistics (TNT still
just a change of ownership) who are you?

Hi John I live nearly as far away from Calgary Alberta as I do England, one day we hope to visit there. Is your book on sale in Canada too, or in the librarys? Two of my grandchildren are avid readers, and they're aged 10 & 12 so that book would be just right for them
Hi Joto,
I think it should be on Amazon, it certainly is on the US site. Judging by the feedback I've had from children over here yours should enjoy it. It is a non-stop fear/fun/action adventure that boys or girls can get into.
Back to Parson Cross, when did you leave and how did you end up in Canada?
John

John
Well John I actually left Parson Cross in 1964 to live in a old house in the Sheffield 10 area, then moved to Stocksbridge in 1967, we never could get a council house. The year was 1973 and things looked bleak for the future, shops were only open three days a week in Stocksbridge. My sister was already living in Canada with her family, so we thought we'll sell up, rent for a awhile and set the ball rolling for a new life for our kids. So in Oct 1974 we came here, and this is home now, my 6 grandchildren were born here.
I guess you've been on vacation here if you took that photo of your niece who lives in Calgary.
Hi Joto,
Possibility of visiting my niece next year as she's threatening to get married.
I was wondering if we crossed paths at all but I would have been 10 when you left.
John

old keith...lokked the same from being a teenager up to last seeing him in the wicker about 15 year ago
Richard PX5 18-04-2009, 01:20 god its wiered seen so many posts of people of parson cross,, its time to meet up to discuss so many good stories of parson cross,,ideal meeting places would be the cross pub,,tavern or the beagle,, great times of parson cross,,THE BEST ESTATE IN SHEFFIELD
What would I give to be at a reunion at the pub, so many names and places bring back good memories. I was sort of cocooned on Deerslands Mount, one way in one way out, except for the walkway at the top end of the Mount. But at least our communial bonfire was safe from scags that would try and take it.
eyup richardpx5 i went past the shops and whats left of the houses behind the other day, its looking like a scene from beirut. such a shame as i know a few off the estate who were more than settled & willing to live the rest of there lives on there. what bugs me is the council were supposed to have started re-building the new houses within a couple of year of the 1st ones being demolished according to helen jackson mp.
Bushbaby 19-04-2009, 19:15 the council were supposed to have started re-building the new houses within a couple of year of the 1st ones being demolished according to helen jackson mp.
You didn't fall for that Helen Jackson rubbish did you? She wouldn't know the truth if it crawled up her nose!!

helen jackson is full of s**t,, my parents lived on mansel for 39 years in the malthouses, they did not want to leave but basiclly forced out, my brother was there when demex was gutting out house for demolition and he spoke to a fella who said that its going to take upto 5 years for the developers to start building as the land needs to settle, but if they build too early they could subside in a few years so looks like mansel is going to look like beirut for a few more years yet :(
sweetdexter 19-04-2009, 23:32 Having moved into a new house on Wordsworth Ave in1947 and later moving to Rokeby Drive.I am dismayed to read the comments about Parson Cross.
Looking at the street scenes on Google Earth of Rokeby Drive it looks to be very orderly clean and prosperous.

No need to guess I had narrowed it down to three You ,your son or your son-in-law ,Y.P.N. gave it away

I left Feb 1966
Bushbaby 21-04-2009, 10:41 I left Feb 1966
I don't know if you listened to the '66 World Cup Final on the good old World Service, but the producer at the time (Paddy Feeney) made the decision not to broadcast the extra time but to revert to the schedule. A career stopper if ever there was one.
Richard PX5 21-04-2009, 13:35 I left Feb 1966
i dont think you would hardly recognise the cross now,, even when i go up there is always something different going on,,even the huntsman pub at end of deerlands are
appartments now :( totally flattend
Dogsbody 21-04-2009, 15:19 How yah doin' these days Al. Long time no see!! Yew Lane's nowt like it used to be these days; too many problem families for a start. It's a shame because it used to be a decent area. I'm told there used to be a ten year waiting list, but that's only hearsay.
Stay lucky pal.

when mum and dad had to move off mansel we looked on net at available homes around the area,,on a general waiting list deerlands mount was 15 years and i think yew lane 10 years but as mum was on priority they managed to get a house in ecclesfield-just next to village and the road they are on has a 20 years general waiting list but as where they lived on mansel there was gangs with knives and bats congreating next to house so constantly moaned to the council for them to be moved,,to be honest i used to hate coming home leaving them on their own,,parson cross is a bloody s**t tip now with gangs and drugs,,its them people what ruined the estate as police are powerless these days to do anything,,we phoned police on so many occasions but they came out next day,,its bloody stupid :loopy:
babysenior 22-04-2009, 00:47 This is my first post but I have read most of the thread and cant believe that its now 1.30 in the morning. Gosh, the memories of my childhood have come flooding back. Names and places and shops which have all made me smile. What wonderful things Ive read which I can totally relate to, from Davisons & Langtons to Sheldons chippy and the fair near Colley park. Bushbabys comments ar v familiar and resonant of my era because you grew up with my brother and the names of his friends keep being repeated on here. Like bushbaby our family was a large one and I am the youngest of the Senior clan.My mum is still alive and is 87-she lives independantly and is still as marvellous as ever. She put up with some rubbish from my dad who often frequented the Colley club and Tavern-staggering back inebriated especially on Saturday afternoons for his Roasted beef and roast potatoes mum had cooked. I dont know which of the Bushs you are Im thinking Michael perhaps?? my mum and sister Linda have seen John on numerous occasions and he stopped me once in Morrisons saying that "I had got to be one of the Seniors!". Its lovely to hear so many nice memories from childhood and remembering fondly the characters-I remember Maureen Fox-her mum was Mrs Ganley who came in Corbidges newsagents where I worked at weekends. My best mate was Janice Lee whos mum was the infamous Mrs Lee who worked in the chippy. She was lovely and couldnt half chat.Look forward to reading more of the history of Parson Cross. Also- as for Clevelands garage and the "brainwave" of the thoroughfare between Chaucer and Wordsworth I still bear the scar on my face of that bloody slab that nearly killed me whilst playing in those derelict garages!!
Bushbaby 22-04-2009, 07:38 I dont know which of the Bushs you are Im thinking Michael perhaps?? !!
Stephen - a year older than your Steven.
Are you Tracey?
Dogsbody 22-04-2009, 17:34 My wife lived on Mansel Crescent when I first met her in 1959: as you say, it's nowhere near as good now PX5.
babysenior 22-04-2009, 19:57 Hi Bushbaby-yes I am Tracey. I saw the picture last year i the Star and our Steve is def on there-I also think our Linda is too although she saw it and didnt think it was her! Mum was going to write into the Star about it and decided not to.Mum definitely recognised the kids on it and has it in her house now. She always speaks very highly of you all and is appreciative of you sending your best wishes. She is a gem-she truly is! I remember your mum really well too-often beavering away at the top of Mr Cannons garden.I can remember your dad who seemed to be a very quiet gentleman. All my brothers and sisters are alive and well except for as you will be well aware of Wendy and you will most likely remember more about her than I did. Steve lives near my mum on Longley and busy being a very hands on Grandad to his 5 grandchildren! He looks the same but is the image of my dad even down to the bald head!! (he wud hate me for that lol!)
Bushbaby 23-04-2009, 16:18 All my brothers and sisters are alive and well except for as you will be well aware of Wendy and you will most likely remember more about her than I did.
Yeah, I remember Wendy well. Lovely girl. We'll have a chat about her sometime. I'll try to get to see Steve when I'm next over that end of town
Bushbaby 23-04-2009, 16:20 We're all agreed it is your Linda BTW
george1601 24-04-2009, 23:41 i lived on the cross moving from spilsby to milrow cres, i remember the big blue van that had everything on it going down deerlands ave!!!!!

are you talking about alfs food van,, im sure he lived on deerlands avenue near to deerlands mount but also do you remember the fletchers vans on the cross,, they always came on chaucer and sold food from back of van but i wonder if alfs van still about and if so, i guess it must be a relative doing it now
Bushbaby 26-04-2009, 19:14 Fletchers retail vans were a common site on The Cross (and all over Sheffield I guess) up until the early seventies. It was a special treat to get your hands on a custard or a bilberry charlotte. They really were very tasty and it was easy to see why Fletchers became a national institution. BTW. Do we know if Rolf's murel was destroyed in the fire?

who was rolf  but i do remember the fletchers vans well but i was born in 72,, they must have finished the rounds altogether around 79 to 80 ish
Bushbaby 27-04-2009, 15:53 who was rolf :
Rolf Harris's murel, from Pond's Forge Baths, was bought by Paul Fletcher and put into the Bakehouse on Claywheels Lane, when the swimming pool closed down. I guess it must have been fire-damaged on that fateful day (you could see the smoke from Norfolk Park flats on the tram) but it would be nice to know for sure

i remember the murel now but it was at sheaf valley baths what got demolished but it may have gone over to ponds forge when it opened up but i am not sure,,we was at glynn webbs on kilner way when te fire broke out,, they closed all the roads and resients in the local area told to keep windows closed due to toxic chemicals but was a coincidence when northern foods who owned fletchers just put clay wheels site up for sale just before the fire,,was it an insurance job????
Bushbaby 27-04-2009, 18:00 it was at sheaf valley baths
You're right of course - I did mean Sheaf Valley. When you get my age the brain cells don't regenerate like they used to. It (the murel) did move across to Fletchers bakehouse. In fact, on a visit to Sheffield Rolf was invited to go and see it (don't know if he ever did though), and I do know that Paul Fletcher was extremely proud of it.
Insurance job? Perish the thought - Paul Fletcher is as honest as......Well. I suppose it is possible..??

it was speculation as it was up for sale but as it burned down people said it could be an insurance job,,who knows but today i have found out some very interesting news,, if anyone knows bob wright (chairman of colley club) who ownes the boxingclub ajacent to mansel school,, there is speculation that colley club may be closing down and bob wright is going to turn it into a big boxing club,, if i thought it was hearsay i would not post it but i found out off a club member today and he sounded genuine so i will be real sad if the club goes as have so many great memories of going in club :(
Love reading these post. Does anyone remember the horse and cart that sold vegies, well the horse did`nt sell anything but you know what I mean. on Deerlands Mount, on a friday night I think. it was in the early 50`s. We used to wait with a bucket for the horse to " drop its load" then scoop up as much as we could and put it straight on the rhubarb, rhubarb,"queer word that".
Richard PX5 28-04-2009, 07:01 i remember my grandad was a keen gardener and grew his own veg and remember him telling us that he went out picking up horse muck off wordsworth
Bushbaby 29-04-2009, 09:01 i will be real sad if the club goes as have so many great memories of going in club :(
Best night I ever had in Colley was seeing Bobby Knutt at his peak (1974 ish)
It was one of those nights when you laugh so much your jaw hurts all next day. Around the same time, Charlie Williams and Marti Caine were both class acts who played there regularly. Resident musicians were Don & Jean. Jean was a big lady, in every sense of the word, and Don was like Jimmy Clitheroe.
I remember when Wally Beer's dad was arrested for breaking into the one-armed bandit. Three months later he was on the committee! Corrupt? You do the math
PS: Saw Jimmy Clitheroe at The Lyceum in panto ('64 I guess). Brilliant!!
cornishmaid 29-04-2009, 10:44 I lived on Tunwell Avenue from 1947 when I was born until I was about 8 years old , went to a school called, I think , Monteney ? I remember a shop called Rusbys where we used to go with thr ration books and back then, it was all quite new and nice. Reading some of the posts, I think it would be a shock to my memories to go back !!
Richard PX5 29-04-2009, 15:32 yeah parson cross is becoming un-recognisable but monteney infant is still there but the juniors got demolished a few years ago now it is houses on the old school ground now

i saw jimmy clithero at "the lyceum" in the 50's also went to see ruby murray and eddie calvert [the man with the golden trumpet] there too, all of them were brilliant, as for the fruit n veg man with the horse and cart, i remember my dad and mr titman across the road from us bidding against each other for the bucket of horse sh*t. happy days.

i will put that down to getting too bloody old,,thanks for letting me know :D
Richard PX5 29-04-2009, 22:49 Just watched your youtube videos , brilliant use of music and photography but sad too .
thanks for the compliment, i tried my best to get some pics of parson cross and its all my work,,i did it as there is so many people on here who have emigrated many years ago and its just a look back of what had happened to parson cross over the last couple of years,,i know its sad to see the burned out houses on deerlands and demolition of mansel but its now all waste ground, its something to look back on as i have all the pics on my p.c, more to look back of what it was and what it is like now,, if anyone on forum wants any pics i will e mail for anyone if i get an e mail address, you can send it me through a personal message on forum
You didn't fall for that Helen Jackson rubbish did you? She wouldn't know the truth if it crawled up her nose!!i dint fall for any of her s**t however she did tell me that the council went back on a promise to start rebuilding on the cross within a year of any demolitions taking place which as you all know is true
helen jackson is full of s**t,, my parents lived on mansel for 39 years in the malthouses, they did not want to leave but basiclly forced out, my brother was there when demex was gutting out house for demolition and he spoke to a fella who said that its going to take upto 5 years for the developers to start building as the land needs to settle, but if they build too early they could subside in a few years so looks like mansel is going to look like beirut for a few more years yet :(helen jackson said rebuilding work should have started within a year of demolition but the council went back on there word. also a major building company should have started rebuilding work on the colley park/ st peters school site last year but theyve come under financial trouble of there own along with there financial backers
Bushbaby 30-04-2009, 17:02 the council went back on there word
I refuse to believe that Sheffield Council, that fine bastion of upstanding integrity, would welch on a promise to the council tax paying population who fund their exotic lifestyles. Mike Bowers would be turning in his grave if he was dead
Richard PX5 02-05-2009, 16:08 we all know what the government do,,they promise everything, then get voted in and then dont deliver the goods,, thats why this country is a s**t tip

No, I'm that bloke that lives on Yew lane and used to work for Roddison and then Fred Shaw. My name's Ernie and I drove the fastest milk cart in the West. We had mutual friends called the Beers.
Fred Shaw ohh that name rings a bell. I wonder how Spain is this time of year.

As I recall, it was Northern Cyprus where he went to open up a restaurant or summat. It's rumoured he went there because there's no extradition treaty between there and the UK, and if you owed so much to so many, (with apologies to Winston Churchill), it seems like the sensible thing to do.

I know some people who live on Holgate Road - John Lee lived opposite the field and he was in my class at mansell. - John Naylor lived at 12? great friend of mine we went to mansell together, lost touch around 1962, not seen or heard from him since would like to know how he's doing, anyone know?
At 2? Holgate road lived Alan Bennett who again I went to school with (mansell again).
Know many others but can't remember their names. Anyone remember the Twinnies, number 4? Holgate
Richard PX5 17-05-2009, 22:49 anyone know the broadhursts who lives on holgate avenue???

Alf Beer, and his son Wally (Ray). It would be stretching things to call them 'honest'. Mind you, Ray was a bit of a laugh.
I lent Ray Beer my brand new "Doc Martins" to go to court once he got 2 years havent seen him or my boots since
AndieFantom 19-05-2009, 14:50 came to england when i was 8 and always lived in parson cross ever since, I used to love it, but now I hate this place with a passion, im trying to get out, looking for houses in better areas.
AndieFantom 19-05-2009, 15:16 it used to be a great place when I was a kid, kids playing in the street without managing to damage anything or swear at the neighbours, we even had street parties, now the kids don't even respect where they live, they just trash the place stealing proerty to weigh in or just burn for the fun of it, spraying graffiti all over the place, the new shopping centre on halifax road has already been vandalised! and as for deerlands/buchanan being re-developed !!! just gives the idiots something new to damage! I cant wait to move.

yeah andie i totally agree with you and most on the forum will agree,,parson cross used to be a great estate and it went downhill only over the past 10 yrs or so,, i lived on mansel for 21 years and loved it but it just got worse,,then came the demolition of my parents house,, they will never be able to re-build parson cross like it was,,its a bloody shame
AndieFantom 19-05-2009, 16:23 well the sooner I get out of here the better, I wont miss the smell of weed every time i go to the local shops, or the verbal abuse when I tell the kids to stop using my garden as a short cut. i'll have a big smile on my face when I finaly go.
baby tiger67 19-05-2009, 16:28 nigel morton still lives on there

i know where you are coming from andie,,my parents lived at the back of chaucer road shops in the malthouses (now demolished) and me wife and kids went to visit,, there were gangs on the back of the shops on the service road with knives,, they was smoking weed, getting p***ed and urinating, my dad wanted to confront them but i stopped him as if he went out they probably would have stabbed him,, the times they called police and the best they could do was to come out the next day, with that they said they are pushed for resources,,what was the point of the police coming out the next day so they never bothered phoning again even when lads was smashing the windows in the empty house next door,,quite sad really as in my opinion if the police came out on every call out, parson cross may have not got in the state it is in now
AndieFantom 20-05-2009, 06:34 Its basically down to everyones rights being taken away, the police, teachers and parents, i remember my dad saying that the police used to give kids a swift slap if they were up to no good and if he went and told his mum she would slap him too for getting himself into trouble lol, im not saying police/techers or parents should slap someone every time they misbehaved as I can only ever remember my mum and dad hitting me once! i was too scared to be to bad! one look off my mum or dad and I was in tears! the thought of dissapointing my parents was too much to bare! but I do think that this counrty has got way too soft on discipline, I don't blame the police or parents for somtimes loosing it and giving somone a slap, i've been driven to the edge myself, there is only so much a person can take.

Glenn Fox 24-05-2009, 21:13 I remember Maureen Fox-her mum was Mrs Ganley who came in Corbidges newsagents where I worked at weekends. My best mate was Janice Lee whos mum was the infamous Mrs Lee who worked in the chippy. She was lovely and couldnt half chat.Look forward to reading more of the history of Parson Cross. Also- as for Clevelands garage and the "brainwave" of the thoroughfare between Chaucer and Wordsworth I still bear the scar on my face of that bloody slab that nearly killed me whilst playing in those derelict garages!![/QUOTE]

where was corbidges newsagents??? was it on buchannon??and which chippy was mrs lee at?? i know that lotus house on chaucer road was run by the lee's in the 70's but is it the same lee's glen
Glenn Fox 25-05-2009, 07:49 No they were all on Margetson shop parade, and the Mrs Lee we were talking about wasn't Chinese, She worked in the chippy for years and years, or it seemed to be so, when your a kid. The same family run the news agent for years so it was always known as Corbridges for obvious reasons. My gran lived on Margetson for years, so as a kid I always went to those shops so I could call in and see my grandparents at the same time.

Hi everyone. I am from Wordsworth Ave way back in the 60's. Having moved around the UK I now live in Ecclesfield. There is loads I will eventually put on this Forum, but 1st, what happened to my mate Pete Howe. I last saw him in Neepsend about 6 years ago. Also Jean Sykes from Yew Lane, her dad was a policeman. not seen her since 1965. most of my freinds lived between our house next to the Petrol station and Monteney taking in both sides. Lets get talking.
Cycle Speedway is alive and kicking.
bushsenior 02-07-2009, 13:12 i saw jimmy clithero at "the lyceum" in the 50's also went to see ruby murray and eddie calvert [the man with the golden trumpet] there too, all of them were brilliant, as for the fruit n veg man with the horse and cart, i remember my dad and mr titman across the road from us bidding against each other for the bucket of horse sh*t. happy days.
My brother and I went to see Jimmy Clitheroe at the Lycuem in approx 1958. Before we got to the 49 bus stop at Buchanan, my brother had lost the ten bob note my mother had given us. We went back home and she gave us more money. Can you Imagine how much a pound was worth then. a pint of milk was 3p. I look back now and feel really bad about it, but the show was great.
Cycle Speedway is alive.
disleydog 02-07-2009, 20:21 yeah 10 bob was a fortune !
but in 1962 I found a £5 note at the Sheffield Gala when it was next to Fletchers Bread Factory . The Clarvoyant (Gypsy Rose ....) said she'd lost a fiver but she wasn't very good as she never knew I found it!!
me and my mate Fred Pegg spent all night on the waltzer , (only a tanner a ride , then )you couldn't get one decent ride now for a fiver .
Harleyman 04-07-2009, 22:26 If anyone lived around the Wordsworth avenue area near Colley school back in 1948/51
do you remember a character they used to call mad Johnny? He was retarded and used to wear a sailor's hat. Liked to chase kids riding bikes

I think Johny used to live at the corner of Knutton Rd and Margetson Cres
I seem to remember he had a sister who I thought was very attractive
That was when I was 10 years old (1949)

Sounds like the same Johnny. He had a sister who wasn't half bad looking He was harmless when we knew him but heard later on that he became a bit violent and they had to put him in an institution

csidesue 09-07-2009, 23:10 does anyone remember the big stone cross on St Pauls church getting struck by lightening and having to be taken down cos it was dangerous, and then replaced with the wooden one. i also remember Pete Herring from Wordsworth ave climbing up the tower onto the old stone cross, under cover of darkness ofcourse.
i lived on dryden road they used to call it the golden mile and when i had finished school and work i felt like i had walked for miles
Peter Herring here - I can confirm that I am alive and kicking and yes I did climb the church, much to my mothers (Betty -also still alive and kicking) dismay.
My brother Micheal joined the army and was based in Germany but now resides in Cornwall
I have now retired from such activities, i just lift pints.
Is there anybody out there from the night of the church climb.(or the fields of fire?)
Pete

yes Pete, I was a witness to the deed on the said night, along with all the others from the youth club or was it the colley young socialists footie crowd, Ben Graysons dad was manager, and i remember my dad having an honourary roll too (he too is still with us, aged 90, and very frail now, and my mum was with us till last dec too].I was with Margaret Harrison and June Fowler a short while ago, sadly it was at Linda Jacksons funeral. Her and I had remained best friends all our life, and I miss her terribly.
Do you remember our sunday morning hikes too, and the long staff you used to take. We went round rivelin valley, up stanage edge into hathersage, played footie somewhere near little johns grave then on to fox house, where some of us got the bus home, too tired to walk anymore, then on to Don Halls for a sunday night party with much underage drinking going on, and we thought we were the wild bunch....the kids of today would consider us very tame. Are there anymore of our lot out there from the youth club or footie team come on lets hear from you too...we can all reminiss together. Look forward to more posts. ps remember me to your Mick too. If he goes on friends reunited he will see himself on one of our class school photos.........Sue Elliott
csidesue 16-07-2009, 01:28 Can you still remember the names of the footie team....i can remember some perhaps you can fill them in WAM, Ben Grayson, Gary Baker, Raymond Else, Stuart Booth, David Reading, John? Parker, and i think there was an Ian after that i'm lost help
s there anybody out there from the night of the church climb (or the fields of fire?).............is that the corn field on Deerlands and Chaucer??
Anyone remember a guy called Woolley, lived in Doe royd Cres, from about 1950 to mid1960's. Went to Meynell Rd, used to ride a motorbike, worked at the Admiralty for years and then Batchelors. Became an Engineer and finished up as a Diplomat in Australia. He had a couple of brothers and a sister. His father rode a combination and was a strange person.
is roger tordoff still alive and kicking, i heard he retired from teaching when clowne college was taken over by chesterfield.
Bushbaby 30-07-2009, 09:02 My brother and I went to see Jimmy Clitheroe at the Lycuem in approx 1958.
Did he do that thing where he walks out, takes his (schoolboy) cap off and tosses it 5 yards across the stage onto the hatstand? Never failed. He certainly did it at The Winter Gardens (Blackpool) in '66. Scaffolding Great Britain loved him. I think they were the same age
Bushbaby 30-07-2009, 09:06 Pete Howe is alive + well, saw him at the bus stop on Wordsworth Ave nr Herries Rd on Sunday 12th.
Good news indeed.
I remember him, my brother (Bushsenior) and Dominic Woodcock playing "High Heeled Sneakers" in our front room - that was until Scaffolding Great Britain came home.
That usually signalled the end of any fun
Was Pod, Martin?
yes thats the one bushbaby

Bushbaby 03-08-2009, 07:07 yes thats the one bushbaby
I remember him being very tall at a very young age. When he was in the fourth year at Mansell, he was taller than Ray Pollard, who was fourth year at Colley.
Did he get much bigger?
hiya bushbaby he finished up bout 6ft 9inch
Chap BLADE 14-08-2009, 11:44 I lived on Knutton Cres and definitely know who the Batt is from the names hes mentioned and his Jimmy Clitheroe comment(by the way you wont get those Dockers back of Ray Beer he died a few years back i think)I can guess who Bushbaby is or at least take a punt
Pete Howe once scared me to death, left my mates house on Dugdale on cold dark night and heard the most blood curdling scream ,walked all the way up Knutto Cres crapping myself until i got to the Beagle and Pete was under teh old red tetley sign that hung on the side of the boozer with his guitar, the screaming was part of the 2song " he was 2singing".

Thanks for that, I will keep a lookout for him. I hope he is well.
cycle speedway is alive and kicking
bushsenior 20-08-2009, 15:14 I was born on Wordsworth Avenue in 1950, I had lots of great freinds from around the area and from my two schools,St Thomas Mores and St Peters.I could write a book about the times we all shared as kids and teenagers at Colley youth club and Mansell youth club. I have lived in different parts of the country since then but now live in Ecclesfield approx 1 mile from my birthplace. I was filling my car at the petrol next to our house last week.Whilst i was filling up something flew past my head and hit the car wash window. I looked around and saw about ten youths, [Scumbags] across the road at thhe top end of the bungalows. As i was looking they threw another stone and hit a mans car on the air pump. He shouted across at them, they ran across the road towards him, he dropped the airline jumped in his car and sped off, with these scumbags throwing stones at his car.I actually left me car half filled, got in the car and locked the doors until they were out of site. I am ashamed to say that I was scared stiff. I went in to pay, the girl on duty had phoned for the Police but said they never show up.
What a horrible shame, 30 years ago my brother and his mates would have given them a pasting. Sadly, it appears they have no fear of reprisal from the Police, Parents or anyone else. I loved where I grew up and find it so sad the way it has changed. Even Mick Smith must be glad to get away.

Even Mick Smith must be glad to get away.

i dont blame you,,nowadays you cant do nothing, even the police hands are tied,, my mum and dad lived on mansel in the flat roof malthouses but when next door came empty kids was smashing windows and basicly causing havoc,my dad phoned police so many times but they never came out,,oh they did the next bloody day to appoligise,, what is the point in that and we all wonder why parson cross estate is a dump now,,its because kids have been allowed to vandalise the estate,,e-g,, the gutted out houses on deerlands,, im now 37 and as anyone can say on here we was not all perfect kids in parson cross,,knocking and running and maybe hedge hopping but not sheer vandalism like now,, we respected the estate we lived on so why now do kids think they can wreck it,, eventually my parents got out of the war zone and got a great house in ecclesfield village,,but its sad that parson cross is getting unrecognisable especially since nearly every malthouse on mansel is now demolished, including my old house which i was born in :(
sycamore66j 20-08-2009, 21:54 roger is very much alive he still lives on greaves road in ecclesfield
eyup MH01, you just got there before me. also roger is involved with ECCLEFIELD CONSERVATION GROUP who hold monthly meetings in the stocks pub. they do a lot of good work around the village keeping it clean, tidy and presentable.
I lived on Masters Rd 1947-52, it was a great place to live, we youngsters used to meet in the Circle, we played games, chatted to the girls, went to the Youth Club, very fond memories. Now I read things that I don't understand, what went wrong?

BrightonYork 26-08-2009, 16:42 I was born on Deerlands Mount in 64 the only boy in the family and also the youngest. I have 4 sisters. Iris, Barbara, Joan and Lindy. We moved to Heeley when i was quite young but i still have some memories and my sister Joan returned to live there for a while about 20 years ago. I haven't been through there for about three years now but it was already being demolished then and looked quite sad. I now live near Brighton but love this forum as it is the only way i can keep up with what is happening.
Chap BLADE 27-08-2009, 11:36 Anybody remember a guy who used to walk the estate staring at a pen (60s and 70s) always had a long black raincoat on even in the summer and another bloke who used to wear a big flat cap (mad Al?)who would talk to us kids but was obviously not a full shilling .Got a feeling they both lived somewhere near the Parson Cross Hotel but you would see them all over the estate .
And the disabled Wednesdayite who used to have that strange cycle/wheelchair ,lived near the ritz i think ,what happened to these characters ?

Glenn Fox 28-08-2009, 02:00 I was born on Wordsworth Avenue in 1950, I had lots of great freinds from around the area and from my two schools,St Thomas Mores and St Peters.I could write a book about the times we all shared as kids and teenagers at Colley youth club and Mansell youth club. I have lived in different parts of the country since then but now live in Ecclesfield approx 1 mile from my birthplace. Glenn Fox 28-08-2009, 02:05 Hey Glenn, would you be any relation to the Foxes that lived on Deerslands Mount, I was mates with Tom and his cousin David in the 50`s
I have no idea to be honest, I would have to ask the old fella!
Glenn Fox 28-08-2009, 02:38 god its wiered seen so many posts of people of parson cross,, its time to meet up to discuss so many good stories of parson cross,,ideal meeting places would be the cross pub,,tavern or the beagle,, great times of parson cross,,THE BEST ESTATE IN SHEFFIELD
went in the PX when it was the Chaucer school festival a few weeks ago, WHAT A <deleted>, you could breed fleas, sticky carpets bad decoration the lot. It was about five years ago I gave up DJing in the cross, it was never the best but, it certainly has gone down hill!
Glenn Fox 28-08-2009, 02:44 Did anyone play “Bullroar” like we did? (I think it probably had dfferent names in different eras)
It was usually played in the build up to Bonfire Night, especially on those evenings devoted to mischief.
Basically, one had to tightly pack the bottom opening of the largest drainpipe of a house, with newspaper, and set fire to it. As the heated air drafted up the pipe, it caused a howling sound (hence “Bullroar”) which resonated through the building and brought neighbours out to investigate.
The long autumn evenings would just fly by….
The Stantons and the Sheldons were champions at "bullroar"

anyone know whats happening regarding the building of houses on the former colley & st peters school sites yet? they were suppose to have got planning permission & started building early this year but nowts happened as yet no doubt they'll put it down to the recession eh:rolleyes:
Haven't seen much mention of the fields behind Adlington Cres. The top half was just an open field, the bottom area was alternatively used to grow potatoes and corn. We lived on Adlington, and had an ongoing battle with the kids on the far side of the field on Lytton Rd.
There were large craters, we thought they were bomb craters, but were probably left over when the houses were being built. We used to cover these with corrugated sheets of metal to make dens, then we put grass sods on top in an attempt to conceal them. Unfortunately the kids from the other side were quite wise to this, and used to come over to pinch them, which meant we had to pinch them back again.
We used to make dens in the corn when it was growing, and help ourselves to the spuds on the odd occasion. There was also an area which we used to play football, and a cut through to the shops on Buchanan. Now most of the area has been built on, so no such fun for today's kids. Such happy days, where did they go?

You are right about sam, he used to knock on our door and ask for a fag. The other guy who used to chase and frighten kids was referred to as daft Eric. He lived just below the Cross Hotel. I suspect he was a Downs Syndrome child

What a Carte Blanche/snobbish attitude. Parson Cross is not all bad, yes I agree there are the low life on the estate, but Parson Cross is not unique in having its share. As for council tenants (spelling), what's your downer on them? I actually own my own home (no mortgage) but I was brought up in a council house & it's never done me any harm. I was born & brought up in Attercliffe & I'm proud of the fact, loved every moment & will always remain very close to friends & neighbours from 'down there'. We moved to Parson Cross in 72, close to where my maternal grandparents lived & my mum originated from. I still live (albeit in a different house) in the area & I love it. Fantastic friends/neighbours & I can't see me ever moving. It really riles me when the 'let's knock Parson Cross' brigade start spouting off & as for knocking council tenants .......... I'd best sign off now

well said lyn,, what a negative attitude he has,, so why the difference between council tenants and private,, most houses on parson cross are council compared with such as grenoside, so just because we lived in a council house does not make council tenants bad people,, parson cross may not be up there with snobby estates but i loved living on parson cross and i know its gone down hill over the last few years with demolition work, ect,, but it can only get better in years to come,,,,hang in there cross:banana:
mr_blue_owl 20-09-2009, 11:47 does anyone remember the big stone cross on St Pauls church getting struck by lightening and having to be taken down cos it was dangerous, and then replaced with the wooden one. i also remember Pete Herring from Wordsworth ave climbing up the tower onto the old stone cross, under cover of darkness ofcourse.
Yes I remember it well. It landed in the Rookers' garden next door but one from us. I lived at #583, my family name is Marshall. When they erected the new wooden cross, my picture was on the front of the Star as I was one of a bunch of kids sat on the wall watching the crane operate.
mr_blue_owl 22-09-2009, 13:17 i saw jimmy clithero at "the lyceum" in the 50's also went to see ruby murray and eddie calvert [the man with the golden trumpet] there too, all of them were brilliant, as for the fruit n veg man with the horse and cart, i remember my dad and mr titman across the road from us bidding against each other for the bucket of horse sh*t. happy days.
The fruit n veg man was my Great Uncle Charlie - My Mum's uncle.
My Uncle Len, Mum's brother, was also in the fruit and veg trade he had a shop at Sheffiled Lane Top.
I remember the family drama when Uncle Charlie's horse died, it was a bit like that episode in Steptoe and Son.

I was born on Parson Cross in the 1940s, then it was a friendly area when people helped each other and you could go out and leave your house unlocked.
thankfully I moved away in the 1960s and would not wish to move back there for love nor money.
Passing through the area it now seems to resemble Beiruit or similar, problems with drugs and other things. I feel sory for the decent people who still have to live there.

No different to umpteen other estates up & down the country, yes there are the undesirables same as anywhere else. My brother's a builder & has worked building some beautiful houses in areas where you would assume trouble & vandalism doesn't exist. Wrong, as fast as the windows are put in, bricks are hurled through the glass & vandalism is rife. The World was a different place in the 60s, times have changed & (I hasten to add I don't for one minute think they're changing for the better) we have to change with them.............

I think your memory is playing tricks , as the cross never actually fell off the tower , it certainly cracked and twisted , but was held fast by it's re-enforcing steel rods
are you Brian Marshall ? if so ,

You know I could have sworn blind that the cross fell right off. I think it may have been a remark from someone who said 'it would have landed in Rookers garden' that stuck in my mind.
I'm Keith, Brian is my brother - seven years younger. I remember Albert being in our house when Brian was being born upstairs. My folks and the Millwards must have lived next door to each other for around fifty years!
Say 'hello' to Anita if she remembers me. I will always have fond memories of Uncle Albert in his garden and dear old Auntie Dot. Robert too was a good mate.
Cheers, nice to hear from you.

A swiimming pool - which I never use

mr_blue_owl 25-09-2009, 23:47 I Google Earthed it and now remember the part that runs near Holgate but the start bit near Remington/Colley - which is about 300 metres from where I lived - I still can't remember!!

I lived on Holgate avenue right next to the stream- in fact on a couple of occasions it flooded the house out.
We used to spend most of our time along that little valley, catching sticklebacks and getting covered in leeches and as we got older- about 11 or so we used to hunt the rats that lived in holes by the side of the stream.
There were some pics of it as it is today somewhere on this forum and although its never been perfect there, today its a mile long scrap yard, full of old washing machines, bike frames and stained mattresses.

it's just the posh name of what we always just called "the Brook "

No wonder I can't remember it. I must have been looking at something else on Google Earth - near the 'Hut' on Remington where mum used to play Bingo. The Brook I vaguely remember, I cannot recall it being called Tongue Gutter.
Reminiscing about the Cross reminded me of when Rob Millward and I, and a couple of other guys often used to go train spotting in Ecclesfield near the Basket Bridge. There was another train spotter there, a guy a bit older than us who lived at the botom end of Shiregreen if I remember correctly. Whenever we asked his name he never would tell us, so we always refferred to him as 'Mystery Man' This went on for ages until one day he borrowed my book of train numbers. He looked very surprised when he opened the inside cover and saw his own name there. Yup, we had the same first and family names - and to this day I belkeve he is the only other Keith Marshall I have ever met in person

I dont recall the name- I was born on Holgate in `60 and left in... about `81, moved back in `99 and left again to move south in `01.
My childhood was spent mainly in the company of the kid who lived next door to me and a few others and its odd but I never really knew that many people!
disleydog 28-09-2009, 13:35 [QUOTE=Jabberwocky;5470180]I lived on Holgate avenue right next to the stream- in fact on a couple of occasions it flooded the house out.
that must have been some rain storm then as the brook must have risen at least 25 feet and flooded some 25 yards of fields !!
if you were flooded out , I don't think it was because the brook overflowed .

I knew Ralph, he used to knock about with the Broughtons (Derek and Alan) on Milnrow road. I went out with his sister, Maggie, for a while. Ralph was a real bright bloke but so laid back he nearly fell over.

It happened twice, once in... around 1966 and again in 1979, both houses on Holgate were waist deep in water both numbers 90 and 92.
The tunnel that goes under Holgate used to get blocked with rubbish and the water had nowhere to go except into the houses of that bit of the street- they were almost flooded again in the 90s but I lived nearby and helped to clear the tunnel which wasnt easy because of the pressure of all the water against the old road signs and shopping trolleys and car tyres and mattresses that had floated down stream and lodged against the grating there.
I understand the council have built a sort of earth rampart against it now- I wonder if it works.

Its got more than one name.. Hartley Brook and the Tongue gutter and the brook just to name three.
It comes out on Wordsworth avenue- if you cross the road at the Total petrol station and go to the side of the bungalows there then thats where you`ll see the tunnel.... Look across the road and youll see the house there with the sunken garden- I think the garden sank because the tunnel passed under it and collapsed... Unless theyve fixed it of course, its been almost a decade since I was there.

bernette 28-09-2009, 21:53 Hey, I was born and raised on Parson Cross. Went to Yewlands, but spent a lot of time when I was supposed to be in class, behind the shops on Buchanan with my boyfriend!
The hairdressers had an old table out back. Does any body remember the name of the shop? Finally my mam got wise to what was going on and ambushed us about 5.30pm one night. She went ballistic and grounded me for weeks!
I havent been back to Buchanan for years and years....are the shops still open, are they still standing?
Are the houses on Adlington still standing?

I knew Ralph Hardwick as his older sisters were friends of mine, [they lived on the cres] sadly Ralph passed away a number of years ago. i think there is only his sister Margaret left, as both Pat and Anita have also passed away. Ralph was a prison officer at Leeds or was it Manchester prison for many years.
will answer your pm shortly sorry for delay

I heared that the brook used to be the border between Parson Cross and Ecclesfield too, until they built the new parson cross houses.
One thing I DO know for a fact is that brook was full of leeches- we used to go through the tunnels and and come out the other end covered in the ` orrible bleedin` things!

moons ghost 29-09-2009, 22:06 Fletchers retail vans were a common site on The Cross (and all over Sheffield I guess) up until the early seventies. It was a special treat to get your hands on a custard or a bilberry charlotte. They really were very tasty and it was easy to see why Fletchers became a national institution. BTW. Do we know if Rolf's murel was destroyed in the fire?
fletchers vans stopped trading or went their own ways in the 90's,a few carried on trading under their own names.as for the rolf painting it was sold before the fire,oh we had fun throwing balls of dough at that painting lol.

Ever since I was a kid I wondered where its real source was... I always imagined it starting as a spring on the moors above Wharncliffe then running through the moors until it was tunnelled at the first housing estate it came to.
Theres been lots of plans to completely tunnel it all the way to at least Barnsley road.
Dogsbody 30-09-2009, 17:25 hiya richard heard of them but dont know em we lived more in the middle of holgate cres
