Hi all. Glad you had a good reunion,I'm sorry I missed it. I've just caught up with all the postings. (It's a long story, trying to get my head round a new computer) Piggy Green's horse n cart was mentioned, I can recall having a ride on it, when I was going home from school one day. I think he must have worked for the council, because he went along shoveling the piles of dirt into the cart, that the road sweeper had left. Then he took it to a council yard at the top of Dunmow road. Can anyone else remember that yard? It was a long time ago, some of you wouldn't have even been born. Can you tell me who has been bullied of this site? And does anyone still hear from lalola.

Well the studying is officially over, I've passed my dissertation and come out with a 2.1 degree with honours in nursing. Which means I can now keep up to date with the thread without trying to sneak a look while I was supposed to be studying:-) x

Hi KayLis, I remember Janice Grainger very well and the Wildgoose girls who lived in the next yard to us on Rothay Road. What year were you a train bearer?

Janice had a brother Malcolm and the Wildgooses were Karen and Andrea-I havent seen or heard from any since I was 8. I was a train bearer in 1961 or 62

Hi martS5
Welcome to the thread.
I see you mention the Morleys
I have recently had contact from a Karen Vikki Morley
but unfortunately cannot put a face to the name
would she be one of the Morleys you remember?
I seem to remember a Vicky Morley living in the prefabs on Margate Drive. I think she was cousin to Valerie Howson, who also lived in the prefabs. I think Valerie moved to Torquay some years ago.

Hi,
I asked the administrator, and this is the reply that I got.

"Hi, the thread has only been closed, no posts have been deleted. You can still quote people then copy the text over and write your message on the new thread.

Basically when a thread gets more than 1000 responses it costs the forum much more money to host it and to add replies to it. We made the decision to close the thread and create a new part. The discussion should continue as normal on the new thread."

So basically just carry on as before, and let the memories start rolling again.:thumbsup:

Hi Spitlip,

I emailed the administrator too but haven't received a reply yet. Like Sheila I also noticed that the Attercliffe thread and the Parsons Cross thread which were the other two largest threads have been locked as well. As you say we're lucky that we're still going and we just carry on from here.

Hi Nettie,
Careful remember the "the long arm of the law" probably stretches to Canada.
only joking having not seen Slip Lip for nearly 40 years it was great to catch up and with him recently on his last trip and have a good natter about the old days.
Split lip and the family tribe arrived in Grimey in 1961 and on his first day at Owler Lane secondary school in year 1 he was told by the teacher to sit next to me, no other buggar would ( was'nt he lucky) not because we were the two best looking guys in the class but probably because we were the only ones in the class with short trouses on and we were both nicknamed legs 11 for a while.

When I was a kid in Grimesthorpe, I recall the corner shop at the junction of Grimesthorpe Rd, Botham St North, Cyclops St and Botham St, was Holmes off licence. My mother bought her weekly groceries there and some on the tab during the week. I am almost positive it was 'Holmes' then, now we are not as old as the picture, if the location is, as I suggest, the business could have been passed down in the family from one generation to the next. My parents moved into Grimesthorpe in 1933, the picture seems to be from the turn of the century and is wonderful snapshot of the era.

Hi NETTI, I was asked at the re-union if I thought it was on the corner of Hunsley and Petre St. but said I didn't think so as H unsley is on a hill, if you look at the photo both corners look pretty level, however, it could be this one on corner of Botham and Petre St. what do you think?

I very much doubt that it was the one on the corner of Botham & Petre St Terry, there was a very slight gradiant on that corner too, it's flat on the photo.

Hi Sheila,
It looks to me that it could be the one at the corner of Petre St and Botham St. The grade on the road looks about right the way I remember it.
I don't know what the buildings could be that are further along Petre St. though. There was nothing there in our time that I can remember until they built J.G. Graves but there could have been companies there back in the time of the photo. Part of the Sheffield Brick Company perhaps? Don't know how we could find out.

Hi Sheila, Hunsley St. is definitely on a gradient from Carlisle Rd. to Petre St. as that part is still there, but from there to Grimesthorpe Rd was a bit more on a level. Talking of hills, you couldn't get much better than Sharpe St. could you? now that was one steep hill, used to hate climbing up there on Sunday morning with a bag full of papers to deliver, don't know why I never made it the last bit of my round instead of the first.:hihi:

Hey-up Terry,
I was thinking back to some of the older posts where there was talk of buildings or premises catching fire, and I remembered that there was a service station on Earl Marshall road, top of Upwell (Stoney) Hill, that went up in flames. I remember hearing the bangs as things exploded inside the garage, and then as the crowd gathered to watch, stuff started shooting through the roof as if fired out of a gun. I think the roof must have been corrugated asbestos or something, and bits of roof were flying everywhere.
Any memories??

I do remember Ernst. He came to stay with his relatives who lived on Wincobank Lane. They must have thought it a good idea to improve his English by sending him to Owler Lane for a few weeks. 'Ey up Ernst, ar tha goin' on'. We were in the 'huts' (first year) and Mr Clifford, in his wisdom, sat Ernst with Alligin and me. I got a big 'telling off' and my first lesson in diplomacy after the next art class, my drawing of the good guys, the British Tommy's machine guning the Jerries didn't go down too well. I still cringe at the thought but nobody said "Don't mention the war".

I didn't think you would remember him. He wasn't there long, maybe a year. It's funny how some things stay in your memories, but you forget other things until something triggers your memory. Well done CAT.

Hi All,
Sent an enquiry to Forum admin regarding whether the old thread would be deleted. The answer is below:

There is no plan to remove the original thread. The reason that the original thread was closed was because large threads use a large amount of server time to open and explore each time they are opened by anyone.

Bearing in mind that the majority of users only want to view current or recent posts, separating the thread into 'current' and 'older' posts means that those who actually do wish to read through the old responses can do so, but for all of the people who only want to read current replies then their opening of the thread doesn't add to server loading.

Hope this puts eveyones mind at rest.

It was only a night to rember because my friends came to call on me to come out, my father would not let me as we had been watching the fire, so I threw my bowl of fruit at him and run like the clappers (what a bad girl).

cat mentioned Mr. Clifford,He married one of the other teachers who was she? I know I was in his class twice, we was such a rowdy lot!!!! he asked for our class, and I must admit he was the best teacher for us. Did anyone remember the yard at the top of Dunmow road? some of the prefabs backed on to it. Talking of prefabs does anyone remember Gwen Sigdley. Her dad was a miner I think

Hello Gemini, I hope you are well. I'm almost sure he married Miss Foulkes. Hilly, the pattern shop fire has been mentioned before and think the year was 1963 or 64. Do you know of any photographs of the fire?

Hi Gemini 2,I remember Gwen Sigdley, the yard at the top of Dunmow rd belonged to the corperation they kept equipment for doing road repairs & salt & grit for icey & snowy roads my dad worked from there.Do you remember Josephine Harris, she lived in one of those stone built houses on Upwell st just below Dunmow rd,she was knocked down by a tram. cat put a class photo on the forum for me it was taken about the same time as the one you put on,did you see it?

Thanks for that cat. I remember her now. Thank goodness someone remembers the council yard, I thought I was imaging it, I do remember Trevor Green taking me to se a dead cat, full of magots, in there. Yes Jean I remember Josephine Harris, she was of school for quite a while, and she used to have funny turns!, because of the head injuries she had. Another name that springs to mind is Pat Byne. Gwen's dad taught my dad to drive and we were great friends for quite a while then we lost touch, I think her mum died. I did see the photo, I got moved up a class in the 3rd year for some reason.

I wonder if you Grimethorpians(?) might be interested in these extracts from the log books of Grimesthorpe School.

Oct 1876 I have had complaints from several people of the nasty filthy words which our children wrote on the walls

Apr 1877 Annoyed by one of the parents today, a woman called Weston. Her language was the opposite of polite.

May 1877 On consulting the record of punishments I find the same boys figure over and over again.

Jan 1878 I had two parents this week complaining about teachers. I found their complaints were without foundation.

Jun 1878 Temperature 90 degrees in school today.

Jun 1879 The boys mother began abusing me so I left her the walls and door for an audience

Dec 1879 A very great snowstorm, the ice is more attractive than school.

Jun 1880 Mr Giddings away. He has the face ache.

Mar 1886 Attendance low through sickness, mostly caused by hunger.

Apr 1889 3 absentees, two are ill and one is dead.

And finally, can you imagine it.

Feb 1964 Police visited the school today in an attempt to find the owner of a book found by the school buildings.

I have only quoted a few brief extracts from the books which cover 1875 to 1893 and 1949 to 1969.

If anyone would like a fuller copy of the extracts I made I am willing to send it. There are quite a few names of pupils and teachers.

What interesting reading. I like the one Jun 1879. What a sad reflection of the times when children are off school because of hunger Mar.1886. I would love to see the reports from 1952 to 1956 when I was there. Maybe I would know some of the names. Keep us posted. I'd love to know what the book was that was found in Feb 1964.

Perhaps it was one of yours Dommi! There are several references to illnesses such as smallpox, scarlet fever, typhus, measles. One thing that stands out is how often the school was closed for public occasions like visits from foreign royalty, Churchill's funeral and several local events like Grimesthorpe Feast and the Flower Show.
I will reply to your pm shortly.

Well as you can all guess, I just had to pm minimo regarding the Grimesthorpe School log.
I have just been reading the document she emailed me and thought I would share this little bit with you all

Jul 1963 Retirement of Deputy Head Miss Anne Hanson after forty
years of service in Grimesthorpe School. She was
presented with gifts, including a nest of coffee
tables and a stainless steel tea service.

Miss Hanson has been mentioned quite a few times in Part 1 of our thread so I thought this would be interesting to everyone.
thank you minimo for a very interesting read.

Weer Did All t’Watter Come From.
Anyone who lived in or near Grimesthorpe knows t’Dyke. We paddled in it, threw bricks into it and most of us lads stood on the wall and peed in it. It gave us endless hours of fun and pleasure, be it a mere trickle or a raging torrent after a downpour.
For anyone reading this and is unfamiliar with Grimesthorpe, The Dyke is a brook that surfaces and runs for a few hundred yards through the vale of Grimesthorpe before disappearing again.
A dyke is usually: a drain, a diversion or a flood control so our dyke, although not unique is unusual in not being called a brook. A search of Google for Sheffield dykes gives a few more unusual variations.
It crossed my mind as a kid, where did all this dyke water come from? I assumed it ran off Wincobank Hill and although some of it does, t’Dyke is swollen by many more streams on its journey to The Don.
A problem with tracing t’Dyke or Bagley Dyke to give its proper name, for most of its course it is below ground in culverts or pipes. Many years ago, t’Dyke was a typical stream meandering through green fields and open countryside before industry and the need for houses that followed, caused it to be built over.
Much of the fun we had playing in t’Dyke was tinged with danger, warnings came from all and sundry, especially ‘grown-ups’. ‘Don’t go in t’Dyke, it’s full o’ rats, the buggers ‘re vicious and if yer corner one it ‘ll go fer yer throat’. ‘Don’t forget to tie some string ‘round yer trouser bottoms, if yer surprise one it ‘ll run up yer trouser leg an’ bite yer willy’. No one explained what us little uns wi short pants should do.
‘Don’t lerrany dyke watter gerrin thi gob, tha ‘ll catch malaria, yeller fever, plague and nits. Oh, I nearly forgot, yer willy ‘ll drop off’. But the warning which scared me the most; don’t go near them tunnels, they’re full o’ bogey men and once they get yer, yer’ll disappear fer ever.
Rats there were and in abundance but usually long dead when we found them. Diseases it’s true were rife, we caught chicken pox, measles, mumps, impetigo and one of them , I can’t remember which, must have been really serious. I had a week off school and a visit from the School Board man, then a seeing to by the nit nurse when I went back. As for the bogy men, I never saw any but my pal Roger Fowler did. He told me some really scary stories about when the bogy men nearly gorrim darn a tunnel so I know it’s true.------------------------------------------To Be Continued.

Weer Did All t’ Watter Come From? Part Two.
One morning as Roger Fowler and I ran down Little Lane on our way to Grimesthorpe School, we could hear a terrible roar. Was it The bogey men? No, ‘t was t’ Dyke in full flood after a night of heavy rain.
It must have been Roger’s turn to pee in it and just as he climbed on the wall, the much bigger opposite wall collapsed into the raging torrent below. Assuming we would be blamed and a fate worse than bogey men awaited, we ran away and didn’t stop ‘til we got to school. For a few weeks after this incedent we went to school via Chambers Lane and kept our secret until today.
So, after all this excitement, weer does all t’ watter come from? It comes from roundabouts here.

Longley Park Swimming Pool.
Just think, many of us could have been swimming in mucky dyke watter without realising it. Longley Swimming Pool is long gone and the next few photos show the area as it is now.

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w17/rh200/LBaths-1.jpg
Bagley Dyke begins in Longley Park. Rainwater soaks from the high ground of the park and many years ago springs formed a pond where eventually the swimming pool was excavated. After heavy rain, a pool of water still collects in the same area.

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w17/rh200/longley_bathsjpg2.jpg
I don’t know if any of the spring water was used to top-up the swimming pool, if it did, I’m sure it must have passed through a refridgeration unit. On the sunniest and hottest of days, the water was always icy cold.
There is nothing left to give even a hint of what was once there save for a manhole cover that marks the beginning of Bagley Dyke’s journey to Grimesthorpe.

I'll take you further upstream cat, over the back of our house at Shirecliffe and in what was called the first wood, was a spring, it then ran through the second wood where Busk Meadow was built & went back underground until it reached Longley Park, where the water surfaced again, see line on the map.

Facinating reflection on Bagley Dyke Cat and very interesting. I can remember playing on the banks of Bagley Dyke during school dinner time. You could get through the railings at the bottom of the dip in Longley Lane, and follow the stream all the way down to what was Firvale Infirmary (what owd uns referred to as the workhouse now the Northern General).

T’Dyke Part 3.
Before we leave the baths, do you remember the entrance?

The only sign of Bagley Dyke through the park is from a row of manhole covers that trace the rout down to Longley Lane bridge. At this place, t’Dyke is joined by another stream that runs under the lane.
http://www.picturesheffield.co.uk/cgi-bin/zoom.pl?picture=http://www.picturesheffield.com/jpgh/s07582.jpg
Such a shame that such a lovely bridge has been replaced by this.
http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w17/rh200/LLaneBridge-1.jpg
It is not possible to photograph the same view as the old photo, the forground is heavily wooded, full of rubbish and brambles. And, might I add, very dangerous too. While attempting to penetrate this jungle I slipped, fell arse over tit and broke two ribs. David Attenborough wouldn’t complain so neither shall I.
Bagley Dyke now meanders for a short way above ground before disappearing, down through the grounds of The Northern General Hospital, parallel with Barnsley Road and all the way to Fir Vale.
The hospital began life as, Sheffield Union Workhouse.
http://www.picturesheffield.co.uk/cgi-bin/zoom.pl?picture=http://www.picturesheffield.com/jpgh/y01175.jpg
Later it became Fir Vale Infirmary.
http://www.picturesheffield.co.uk/cgi-bin/zoom.pl?picture=http://www.picturesheffield.com/jpgh/t00369.jpg
I once fell off my motorbike and sustained a broken leg (yes, I am accident prone) I’m sure this doctor fixed it and the lady, later gave me a bed bath.
I remember visiting my Granny, many times before she died in there, the walk up and down the hospital drive took forever on my little legs.
The culverted dyke flows under the Barnsley Road hospital entrance.
http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w17/rh200/2.jpg
Down to the busy Fir Vale junction where it is swollen by three more streams from the roe woods area.

Well, I try to teach you lot a bit of history and geography about Grimesthorpe Dyke and what do you go on about? Unction and purple iodine. Strangely enough, there was or maybe still is, a paste called, Blue Unction. It was more of a greyish blue but I'm certainly not admitting to using it.

Hi Sheila, How sad to hear about Alan Gill, I knew him from school, bit older than me, then met him at work, many years ago, we both worked for British Rail, at Tinsley, then I worked out of Sheffield and lost contact with him. I was only asking about him a few weeks ago. Was sandra his sister?

Thanks Minimo for emailing the early Grimesthorpe school logs, they make for very interesting reading. I remember Briggs the headmaster, Miss Hanson in her floral smock (she lived on Earl Marshall Rd which had the 'unadopted' sign underneath the street sign). I have mentioned this before, two teachers that taught the very youngest, Miss Richardson (nice), Miss Lishman (not so nice). There was an older lady teacher by the name Miss Late or Slate, she showed us a red triangular Nazi flag with the Swastika in the middle, which she kept in the cupboards that lined the back of the classroom. What seemed like a lifetime later on a visit to Sheffield, I went back to the old school for a look around, I was relaying this story to the manager who was good enough to be giving me the tour, not only did we go to the same room but the cupboards were still there.

Hi Cat,
I cannot place Moss Street as we lived at the other end, the "posh" end of Grimey.
I seem to remember a Oldfields dairy? or is my memory fading and also a guy who may have been a tad younger than me called Oldfield?

Your memory is doing fine Dave.
Alan & Tom Oldfield were a year or two younger than us. Theirs was the dairy/ICE CREAM family on Moss street.
I wouldn't call it posh though, Steve Claypole lived on there, & MinnieJ lived just round'corner.

The Oldfields we knew had the freezer centre across the road from my Mum & Dad's at firth park. The Mrs Oldfield we knew had two sons, it was sad when that shop shut down. I remember as a kid there used to be a garden shop underneath that sold cactai, I never learnt that the spikes came off when you touched them & did it everytime we went in:-)

hi yatesace, I used to deliver papers for Mr & Mrs Yates who had a shop on Petre Street. I belive they had two sons and lived on Torbay Road. Any relation? I delivered papers thirteen times a week from being 12 and collected the paper money on Saturday mornings from the people on Whiteways Drive - slave labour or what! - I used to get 12 shillings for taking the papers and an extra 5 shillings from collecting on Saturday ( used to get good tips at Christmas)

Glad to hear that Dave is on the mend. Love to you both. Gentian violet is a form of methylrosaniline chloride, it's used as an antibacterial, antifungal agent and also as a biological stain. Ringworm is a fungal infection of the skin, hair or nails. Impetigo is an inflammatory skin disease caused specifically by streptococci or staphylococci, so you could say they're the same, but different! It's still around today, but treated very differently! (Medical secretarial background so research was at my fingertips).

Trying to get off all this medical stuff, it's making my skin crawl. The only things I liked getting from the school nurse was Cod Liver Oil and Malt, Horlicks and Ovaltine Tablets. Anyway this is directed to *minniej* - I had just got out of the Army, I had been home for a couple of days, there was a knock on the door, it was Roy and his cousin Doug asking me, did I want to go with them to the 'City Hall' that evening to the dance. Now mind, we had never palled around in the past (Roy was in my class at school and Doug might have been a year younger) they had their circle of friends and I certainly had mine. I had pals still in the Army doing 'National Service' and others about to go in, so I was definitely on my own and at loose ends, they must have realised this. Long story short, I just thought it was a nice gesture on their part, needless to say we went to a pub on Howard St and got to the dance for the last hour, just in time for me to line up a last Waltz.

Nettie do you remember Marilyn and Sylvia Parker who lived opposite the Reform Chapel in the yard next to the dyke shop? Their parents were deaf and dumb so the girls were adept at sign language. Were they in the GB?

To all the people who come onto this thread to knock or mock us. The majority of us are over 50 years of age, and are remembering our youth and childhood, in the area we were brought up in, yes we look through rose coloured glasses at it, but that is how we want to see it. People were a lot more friendly and sociable then, if you attend one of our reunions you will see that, so if you don't like our friendly chit chat and the way we remember our childhood, don't knock us. We like many others, want to remember the days before the degeneration of the area started.

There will prob be a part 3 soon ..return of the grimesthorpe
how can there be so much info on such a boring and depressing area and ive yet to see any comments yet by any asians who are now the true residents of grimesthorpe

Why have you bothered to post on this thread when you have no interest or liking for Grimesthorpe? This is the history section so it's obviously people's memories that are posted. Asians are as welcome as anyone else, including me. I am an 'incomer' but very happy here, and I have done a lot for my community in various ways.

Hope I am still here when part 10 is opened!

Hi Flo
Yes I do remember Marilyn and Syliva Parker
I remember that their parents were both deaf,
but not that they were dumb. I though the mother
used to be able to speak - could be wrong, I will ask
our Wendy.
Marilyn was one of our Wendy's best mates so they
both spent a lot of time at our house.
They used to go to the Reform chapel and yes they
were in the Girls Life Brigade as well.
Last time I saw Marilyn she was working in the Pharmacy
at Boots in town. Havent seen either of them for years.

Just looked it up, impetigo is ring worm, and blue unction is used to cure crabs. I prefer to boil the crabs I get ....from the market.

Just to stop the confusion, Impetigo is not ringworm.

Impetigo is a bacterial infection caused by the Staphylococcous bacteria and is treat by topical antibiotics or oral antibiotics which could lead to more serious conditions if it becomes infected and not treated.

Ringworm is a fungal infection such as athletes foot or fungal toe nails which are treat with anti fungal creams or oral anti fungal tablets.

However both are highly infectious. Hope this helps clear up the confusion.

Flo fennel - Sorry I hadn't read your reply of clearing up the confusion between impetigo & ringworm.

Nettiej - Congratulations on the birth of your Grand-Daughter, she's beautiful.

Geotom - Well done for speaking up. As one of the next generation down we too have special memories about Grimesthorpe and we also had a little reunion last week to talk about the old days growing up, our asian friends were there too, racism doesn't seem to be a problem when you're kids, playing together and growing up.

Sheffy & Penny crayon - Just because you are bitter about your childhood and growing up in the area doesn't mean that everyone else should be. From reading what you've put under different aliases such as iron maiden & jules1234 to try and confuse people or make out that more people agree with you (or yourself) I think you really need help, it can't be easy living with the guilt, anger and hatred of the past.

Most of the kids that come are the next generation down from me and they come because their parents came, although that does make me feel old:-) However some of the kids that come are the 3rd generation of their family and still live in the area so it can't be that bad as the seeds haven't fallen far from the tree so to speak. We have noticed a difference in attitudes, respect for people, property and area over the years but then again we've been running for over 21 years and only had to bar permenantly just over 20 in all those years some of which are sadly not with us any more or at her majestys pleasure. Overall I think Grimesthorpe is a nice area to live still and there are lots of nice people too.

Bagley Dyke. Part Four.
http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w17/rh200/firvale.jpg

This is the story so far, with Bagley Dyke starting its journey in the top left hand corner of the photo, or Longley Park and trickling down through the trees in the grounds of The Northern General Hospital to Fir Vale.
Clearing the busy junction and passing under Skinnerthorpe road T’Dyke ran into the grounds of a large house called Cannon Hall and its water was used to fill an ornamental lake in the garden. The old Hall was demolished in the late fifties and replaced by a pub of the same name. This pub has also gone being replaced by a branch of Tesco. I have been unable to find a photo of the original Cannon Hall, can anyone help please?
http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w17/rh200/DSCN6205.jpg

Almost next to The Cannon Hall was that wonderful old picture house, The Sunbeam.
http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w17/rh200/DSCN6495.jpg
‘twas in The Sunbeam when my excitement of Hopalong Cassidy and Flash Gordon gave way to the pleasures of the back row, the mysteries of bra straps and knicker elastic.
Bagley Dyke takes a ninety degree turn here to run down Skinnerthorpe Road under the back gardens of the houses to the right of this photo and towards Owler Lane.
http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w17/rh200/DSCN6201.jpg
When I took this photo, many of the terrace houses on Skinnerthorpe were boarded up, awaiting demolition and may have already been knocked down.
Before reaching Owler Lane, T’Dyke passes under Bagley Road and many years ago an important footbridge there gave access to Hinde House Lane.
Under this now inaccessible part of Owler Lane, in front of the Infants School
http://www.picturesheffield.com/cgi-bin/zoom.pl?picture=http://www.picturesheffield.com/jpgh/s22275.jpg
Bagley Dyke is joined by two more streams. One flowing to the west of Firth Park along the bottom of The Donkey Hill to the junction of Bolsover Road and Page Hall Road where it meets another from Firth Park pond.
http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w17/rh200/DSCN6455.jpg
Both these join T’Dyke before passing in front of Owler Lane Intermediate and Owler Lane Secondary Schools.
http://www.picturesheffield.com/cgi-bin/zoom.pl?picture=http://www.picturesheffield.com/jpgh/w00982.jpg
The next photo outside Owler Lane Secondary School was taken during WW2 with The Lord Mayor in attendance to celebrate The Schools fund raising efforts. I don’t think todays Health and Safety people would approve of our Mayor standing on a table. I think this picture may have been taken on a Thursday afternoon as Dolly Hyman’s sweet shop appears to be closed. (Thursday used to be half day closing in Sheffield).
Does anyone recognise the gentleman in the dark suit looking directly at the camera and stood slightly to the left of centre? A little girl is by his side.
http://www.picturesheffield.com/cgi-bin/zoom.pl?picture=http://www.picturesheffield.com/jpgh/s03565.jpg
Still following Owler Lane until we reach the old public convenience,
http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w17/rh200/66.jpg
there , T’Dyke turns under Popple Street and Dunmow Road then, into the yard of Grimesthorpe Colliery.
To be continued.

Bagley Dyke is joined by two more streams. One flowing to the west of Firth Park along the bottom of The Donkey Hill to the junction of Bolsover Road and Page Hall Road where it meets another from Firth Park pond.
http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w17/rh200/DSCN6455.jpg
Both these join T’Dyke before passing in front of Owler Lane Intermediate and Owler Lane Secondary Schools.

Still following Owler Lane until we reach the old public convenience,
http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w17/rh200/66.jpg
there , T’Dyke turns under Popple Street and Dunmow Road then, into the yard of Grimesthorpe Colliery.
To be continued.
ralph, there was also a stream that ran down wensley st (on the tip side) we tried to trace its source when we were kids but it ran out up near the grey hills

Gonna be 57 later this year, went to Owler Lane Infants, Grimesthorpe Juniors and Hinde House School, was in the same class as Marilyn Parker - mentioned a few posts ago - her mum was partially deaf and dad profoundly deaf - Marilyn (christened Sarah Marilyn hated the name Sarah) was a rock chick in the 60's and trained as a dispenser in Boots pharmacy - haven't seen her for years though

Welcome CeeBeeBee

Hi George David was born November 1963 and yes we moved to Woodhouse around 1966-7. Do you remember the Farmers who lived in your yard, can't believe that when we moved to Woodhouse they lived just around the corner from us.

Hi ceebeebee, My mum asked if you lived in the first house in next yard up from Geotom. She said the Farmers had all girls & lived next door to my Nan and the Martins used to live in the house where you used to live?

Hi JanieM your mum is right that's where we lived but my memory fails me when I try to remember who lived at No 26. The people I remember in that yard were the Farmers, Clarkes and Heaps so you will have to tell me who your nan is - unless you are related to Geotom.

By the way Pigeon I am not related to the late Francis Butler but I certainly remember him both as a local councillor and a supporter of the youth club on Holywell Road.

It's strange how life works out cos after not visiting Grimesthorpe since we moved I now work at the Sheffield College Education centre on Earl Marshal Road.

Hi Christine, we were the best of friends but lost track of each other when you moved to Woodhouse. As soon as 24 Southwell was mentioned, I realised who you were. Welcome x
