Not been working for Jack since Feb 09 when I was diagnosed with my brain tumour, the tumour and I parted company 7th May 09 and ive not worked since. Just recently lost my mom 3rd April and still trying to get back on my feet, I know I will feel much better after my hols in September, dont get in the Ball much nowadays, last time I went in was a couple of Sundays ago when Kimberley was down from Liverpool with the new baby, we went in for the afternoon with Chris Stocks (Johns missus) and her son Luke, it was Mowtown afternoon really enjoyed it. Kimberley and Luke spent the afternoon playing pool while we looked after the baby.........lol.

Dont think we are related Mrs JDS. I have researched my family history and found that one family of Rawsons were gentry and an eminent family in Sheffield ever since the 16th Century with a grand House at Wardsend, hence "Rawsons Spring". Eventually the family owned a Brewery in Sheffield and a Cutlery Works. The ancestry is described in a book called "Hunters Hallamshire".

As far as I know we are not related to this family, my immediate ancestors were coal merchants in Grimesthorpe and before that carters in Attercliffe, they originate in the 18th Century from the village of Pinxton on the Derbyshire/ Nottingham border. There are still quite a few Rawsons in the Syston/Pinxton area near J28 on the M1.

I know she reads what's been written and Tony her husband sometimes contributes but he's been a bit quiet recently which is not like him, but they are both very busy having just bought themselves a natty little sports car, they are enjoying their retirement and their four grandchildren, plus the fact Janets got me for a cousin !!!!!!! Im sure when Tony reads this he will have something to say. Sheila i remember going to Julie Pickersgills house sometimes for dinner, they didn't have a back door either, it must have been a nightmare when they had to hang the washing out and when it was raining, running round to fetch it back in again. We had just moved into the flat above Lissamans shop on Upwell St and the doors were knackered so we went to Uncle Tom's and Aunty Lotties as they were moving out and borrowed all the doors as they were better than ours.

I think it's him too, we lived next door to Bob and his mum from 1956- 1967/8. I used to run errands for Mrs Litchfield as she found it difficult to get around. Bob's group was also called Rob Roy and the Rebels at one point and we could listen to them rehearsing in their front room. Bob also had a sister who lived in Luton and every summer she would bring her whole family to Sheffield for a visit for 2-3 weeks.

I am so sad to hear of the death of Bob. We were part of a group that knocked around together and had some good fun on trips to Castleton and also at the local dance sessions at the hall at the end of Wansfell Road etc. Our group included Daphne and Glyn Connors, Alan Green, Christine Barson, John Riley, Marie Cowdy etc. I remember him setting up his group which Heather has just reminded me was called Rob Roys.

Mrs JDS the chip shop which was run by Janets g/parents was as Sheila said on Carlisle rd opposite post office,past Sockets it stood back a bit on a kind of recess Mae,s hairdresses was in one corner & chip shop in the other I think there was a fruit & veg shop in the middle.

Thankyou for your condolences.I was born on Southwell and have fond memories of early childhood, even being christened across the road and we lived back on upwell st for 12 years. Mrs Martin on the end of the road was the oldest resident I remembered untill she moved up to Firshill. Does anyone remember the Burgess family on Southwell, Jenny Samantha, cant remember the other 2. It was still a community when we lived on Upwell st with Tony the barber and John at the chippy, now, even the post office is gone. Shame.

Hi litchy, I am so sorry to here about your dad. I have lots of happy memories of playing cowboys and indians, Robin Hood (I was always Maid Marion!) with him and Billy Davies. Bonfire nights was always held in thier yard, with your Gran Mrs.Davies and my mum making bonfire tofee, parkin, chips, jacket potatoes done in the bonfire, the fire being so big that they had to throw water on the toilet doors to stop them from catching fire. thinking about him brings to mind so many things that we used to get up to. He and Billy and a few others tied a button on the end of a piece of string and pinned to our window, then went into the bottom yard and pulled it, mum went out the front door and caught them coming out of Hearnshaws yard. Would you give my regards to Norma I remember her quite well to (Irene Clarke)

I love that one of louie and walt, i can still see louie mopping the steps at the Arms now and Bill Brown, Lol and Ann Wood Jed's, mum. That one in The Wharncliffe looks like mick and kenny myers, terry croudy and is that solujon with hair...... the 2 little lads look like two of the browns as well, mick and john.

Went there about 7 yrs ago, did you frequent the "Cave Bar" ? they put a golf trolley on to take you up and down the hill when we were there.

No we never actually made it, my other half burnt his feet on the second day so we didn't venture too far, but the day we did we walked all the way up but it was shut, i didn't know it only opened at night. Our watering hole n full english breakfast bar was the drunk corner, quite apt for Shaun :) but yes they still have the golf cart to take you up.

Just to let those of you who knew him that Barrie Stringer passed away last night, although not originally from Grimesthorpe he was a regular in The Arms and Ball for many years and made his home in Grimesthorpe, I'm sure you will join me in sending our condolences to all his family especially Janice, Luke and Zoe, two lovely children who are so young to have lost their father.

Ah bless, Luke & Zoe used to come to the youth club, they are so lovely & such a lovely family. Our thoughts are with them and their family x

Hello again mrsJDS, I am not a grimesthorpian (is that what you call yourselves? apologies if I have got that wrong.) so I don't go to your reunions. I am always on the forum and I regularly look at the grimesthorpe thread. In fact I know some of the peole on there. I live locally and I am always interested in books with a local theme. I would love a copy if it is at all possible and I would gladly pay for any cost involved.

Read in last nights Star that Tom Howden has died, not sure if he lived in Grimpethorpe area when he was younger but I know he always used to go in to Grimesthorpe club so some will know him from there. Alan has been to BB reunions at Reform Chapel in recent years. I am not aware he went to Canada. He lives out Worksop way I think but NettieJ or someone else may have his contact details.

The Alan Wooten my husband knew is on a photo of Hinde House School on Friends Reunited and he worked in the labs at Sanderson Kayser, my husband started work there in 1969 and left in 1978.

The back door of the shop on Botham/Peter st was in our yard, my earliest recolections of who kept it Greaves they had a grown up family,then a family called Hemmingway took it they had 2 boys John he was the eldest then Rodney he was about my age,then there was a girl Patricia she was about your age, iv'e got a photo of her with our dog Laddie it was taken somewhere on Peter st, then Kelk's took it from them, it was'nt long after when mum and I moved Jean xx

Yeah my family used to be members there n we as kids then got to go in on special occasions such as xmas. I remember the club trips, panto n disco at xmas and I remember there being lots of pigeons down stairs in cages for racing. We used to go down with our Nan to the payphone which was under the stairs, it had a funny shaped door, Nan used to ring Gemini2 but she awlays used to sneak on the bandit too, her excuse was to keep us quiet while bingo was on, yeah whatever :hihi:

No Skippy John's not related to Malcolm, he is the middle one of the Davies family from the top of Hawkshead Rd, his other siblings are Harry, Terence (Terry) Barbara and Susan (Suzie 123).

John's out of intensive care now and on Firth 9 at the NGH, he's so much better today and thanks you all for your good wishes, i'm sure he will be able to make the next reunion.

Hi lakerman yes he was a crane driver and a shop steward at Brown Baileys in the early 80s, as was my late brother Harry Davies, he was also a crane driver, and also my cousins husband was there too Mick Adams he was the shop convenor too, and last of all my ex hubby worked there too Dave Moore.....and can i thank everyone for sending all their best wishes to my brother John who is making a slow recovery. x

After speaking with my sister who is younger than me and who must have a better memory she has come up with all the names on the first photo.

i used to live on beacon road and then moved on upwell street,
went to owler brook,whiteways and earlmarshall schools.
i also went to the grimesthorpe boys club (can anyone remember the trips to the lake district) keith used to run the club with his brother and i believe it was mick wilks who used to help out, used to play football for the ball in as kids and if memory serves me right it was the owner of the corner papershop opposite frank the tank who used to run it although i cant remember his name i think his wife was called margaret(the shop may have been called margerats) i remember the sam-pan who used to make the best savoury cakes i have ever tasted. used to play at the back of the cars spares side of the dyke cant remember who ran it but they had at least 5 kids who i used to play with, they was also another car spares further down the road next to our doctors (legg i think)i think they were irish and not sure but think his name was bob.
i also used to play with the steers who used to live opposite the anchor chip shop think it was gary and joanne steer not sure what the parents were called. anyone from this era i would love to here from you.

Hiya Darren your right about the savoury cakes at The Sampan they were divine, the couple at the newsagents were Sylvia and Ted Huntington, the family who had the car spares were the Pearsons their eldest son was Keith we knew him as Pancho. Mick Wilks still lives in the area on Skelwith Drive and the Doctor you refer to was Farrell Leddy, how old are you ?
