Can any of you tell me where I could obtain a book called "MOSS" by BILL STANTON. It is a novel set in grimesthorpe. I would appreciate any info. cat631 08-07-2010, 22:24 I don't know where to get a hard copy but it can be read on line here: http://www.billstanton.co.uk/novels/moss.htm lakerman 09-07-2010, 10:25 Many Thanks CAT631. I shall have a look straight away. mrsJDS 09-07-2010, 14:00 I don't know where to get a hard copy but it can be read on line here: http://www.billstanton.co.uk/novels/moss.htm Its never actually been to print, Bill was a playwrite for the BBC, he had one or two novels published but Moss wasn't one of them. My cousins late father in law actually grew up with Bill, he grew up in Brightside but Moss is set Grimesthorpe. I think nettie mentioned in an earlier post that he might be a distant relative of their Linda as his mothers maiden name was Hanwell. lakerman 09-07-2010, 14:20 Hi everyone, Thanks for your replies to my query re "moss" by bill stanton. I have just read about him on Wickepidia. Apparently the "moss" was never printed ( as you rightly said mrsJDS) but thanks anyway. mrsJDS 09-07-2010, 14:26 Hi everyone, Thanks for your replies to my query re "moss" by bill stanton. I have just read about him on Wickepidia. Apparently the "moss" was never printed ( as you rightly said mrsJDS) but thanks anyway. Your very welcome, I do have a copy somewhere that my husband printed off, if your at the next reunion and still want a copy i'll get one for you, he will have stored it somewhere in his computer amongst all the diets and workouts. lakerman 09-07-2010, 17:39 Hello again mrsJDS, I am not a grimesthorpian (is that what you call yourselves? apologies if I have got that wrong.) so I don't go to your reunions. I am always on the forum and I regularly look at the grimesthorpe thread. In fact I know some of the peole on there. I live locally and I am always interested in books with a local theme. I would love a copy if it is at all possible and I would gladly pay for any cost involved. minniej 09-07-2010, 18:43 Its never actually been to print, Bill was a playwrite for the BBC, he had one or two novels published but Moss wasn't one of them. Hope this helps. mrsJDS 09-07-2010, 22:39 As we are speaking about long lost relatives there used to be a family by the name of Rawson, one of whom, Mary Anne became quite famous in her day, they lived at Wincobank Hall, which is now sadly demolished, but the chapel belonging to the house still stands and is the upper Wincobank Chapel on Wincobank Avenue. What i'd like to know is Mary Anne any relation to the Rawsons we all know and love. walt 10-07-2010, 08:36 As we are speaking about long lost relatives there used to be a family by the name of Rawson, one of whom, Mary Anne became quite famous in her day, they lived at Wincobank Hall, which is now sadly demolished, but the chapel belonging to the house still stands and is the upper Wincobank Chapel on Wincobank Avenue. What i'd like to know is Mary Anne any relation to the Rawsons we all know and love. Dont think we are related Mrs JDS. I have researched my family history and found that one family of Rawsons were gentry and an eminent family in Sheffield ever since the 16th Century with a grand House at Wardsend, hence "Rawsons Spring". Eventually the family owned a Brewery in Sheffield and a Cutlery Works. The ancestry is described in a book called "Hunters Hallamshire". As far as I know we are not related to this family, my immediate ancestors were coal merchants in Grimesthorpe and before that carters in Attercliffe, they originate in the 18th Century from the village of Pinxton on the Derbyshire/ Nottingham border. There are still quite a few Rawsons in the Syston/Pinxton area near J28 on the M1. mazda5 10-07-2010, 18:56 hi all i saw roy bows this morning down firth park i told him about reunions at the ball and he said he didnt like venturing out at night as he was mugged at firth park and couldnt fight back as there was two of them but he managed to get away so it as put him right off going out at night, in his younger days they would have never tried it on with him i hope everyone is ok awoollen 10-07-2010, 20:22 hi all i saw roy bows this morning down firth park i told him about reunions at the ball and he said he didnt like venturing out at night as he was mugged at firth park and couldnt fight back as there was two of them but he managed to get away so it as put him right off going out at night, in his younger days they would have never tried it on with him i hope everyone is ok i knew a ray bowes was he any rel he was a good darts player mrsJDS 10-07-2010, 20:23 Hi its Linda here, I was wondering if any of you knew his mothers christian name, :help: Hiya Linda, when I messaged you earlier about Bill Stanton I also asked you if you knew my cousin Janet Brewin who lived at 24 Moss St, lo and behold if I didn't get an email from Bill Stantons son Andy and I told him about the interest in Moss, guess what he told me ? I know she reads what's been written and Tony her husband sometimes contributes but he's been a bit quiet recently which is not like him, but they are both very busy having just bought themselves a natty little sports car, they are enjoying their retirement and their four grandchildren, plus the fact Janets got me for a cousin !!!!!!! Im sure when Tony reads this he will have something to say. Sheila i remember going to Julie Pickersgills house sometimes for dinner, they didn't have a back door either, it must have been a nightmare when they had to hang the washing out and when it was raining, running round to fetch it back in again. I used to run errands for Mrs Litchfield as she found it difficult to get around. Bob's group was also called Rob Roy and the Rebels at one point and we could listen to them rehearsing in their front room. Bob also had a sister who lived in Luton and every summer she would bring her whole family to Sheffield for a visit for 2-3 weeks. mrsJDS 12-07-2010, 23:36 So Seths two timing me is he.Don't faint at this but i worked at Stanley tools with him give him my best wishes when you see him. Hi Suzzie My Mum used to work in that chippy when we were kids, probably about 40 odd years ago, we used to live across the road from the shop, just a few doors up from Crooks fruit shop, next door to our cousins the Rawson twins. Gemini2 17-07-2010, 18:11 Hi litchy, I am so sorry to here about your dad. I have lots of happy memories of playing cowboys and indians, Robin Hood (I was always Maid Marion!) with him and Billy Davies. Bonfire nights was always held in thier yard, with your Gran Mrs.Davies and my mum making bonfire tofee, parkin, chips, jacket potatoes done in the bonfire, the fire being so big that they had to throw water on the toilet doors to stop them from catching fire. thinking about him brings to mind so many things that we used to get up to. He and Billy and a few others tied a button on the end of a piece of string and pinned to our window, then went into the bottom yard and pulled it, mum went out the front door and caught them coming out of Hearnshaws yard. Would you give my regards to Norma I remember her quite well to (Irene Clarke) mrsJDS 17-07-2010, 18:12 lol yeh how much do you want to keep both storys quiet can i pay you weekly lol See how much I can get out of your John first for my silence.I'm still running errands for him, 40 years later. Does anyone remember the Burgess family on Southwell, Jenny Samantha, cant remember the other 2. It was still a community when we lived on Upwell st with Tony the barber and John at the chippy, now, even the post office is gone. Shame. Sorry to hear about your Dad, I had the pleasure of meeting him a few months ago. Re your photos, I know quite a few of the people in the photographs including myself, my sister and brother and parents. The puzzling thing to me is where the photo was taken, as the room with brick walls is a complete mystery. My sister is away on holidays at the present but when she returns I will talk to her and see how many extra names she can remember and post our result. The people lived in Owler Lane and Dunmow Road.
