lakerman 04-12-2011, 19:36 Grimesthorpe bridge station was a temporary station on the Sheffield and Rotherham railway. Apparently this was in 1843, but it was only in use for about three months while different parts of the line were being built/extended .
The location was at Grimesthorpe Junction. Which I think is near near the Upwell St Bridge.
Grimesthorpe Junction 1904. The old station must have been buried under all these tracks.

The first photo, is of Cardigan Sidings, the line went on towards town and terminated at Wicker Goods, where Tesco is now. Going the other way it went on to Rotherham, terminating near where the police station is now.
Southweller 05-12-2011, 18:36 Sheffield to Rotherham Railway, opened Nov 1838, from Wicker Goods Yard to Rotherham, journey time 17 mins. No stations in between until Grimesthorpe Bridge opened not long after, which closed in 1843.

Thanks for the info George. There's another station on the first map which I didn't know existed. In the bottom left hand corner, you can see the words Goods Station. It was just off Stevenson Road on land now occupied by scrap yards.

I think that's where the coalmen used to bag their coal from the railway carriages Ralph, before Burnette and Hallamshire opened a big complex somewhere around the bottom of Duke St with hoppers to fill the bags instead of having to shovel it, but I could be wrong.

The goods yard on Stevenson Road was where my dad collected his coal from the railway wagons after Upwell Street Wharf shut to coal merchants around 1965.
Skippy, the Burnett & Hallamshire place was just off Bernard Road. ( the entrance was between where Bernard Road goes over the parkway and under the railway). We used to fetch smokeless fuel from the hoppers there.

That's right, Attercliffe Goods Yard, I used to maintain the cranes there, also Tommy George, and his sons had their scrap buisness there

So did we Mick, it was a lot easier than shoveling from those railway wagons, no wonder I'm knackered nowadays, those were the days when we didn't have to go to a gym to keep fit, ha ha.
I tried looking on Google maps yesterday, but the roads have changed that much that I lost my bearings.

Heard this morning the sad news that Les Cusworth, Ex Boys' Brigade Captain of the 53rd, also Sunday School Secretary and many other jobs at Grimesthorpe Wesleyan Reform Chapel passed away peacefully in the Northern General Hospital last night. Rest in Peace Les.
It is indeed very sad news.
Rest in Peace Les. He was a lovely gentleman

Very sad to hear of Les's passing, he was a true servant of the 53rd BB company. The pamphlet makes interesting reading John. I have fond memories of joint ventures with the 21st company particularly summer camps in the 1960's.

Grenoside Crematorium,
South Chapel at 12.15pm. RIP Les.
Hello John. I'm sorry to hear Les Cusworth has passed away.
Your 53rd. history pages brought back a few memories. I well remember the Sheffield Battalion camp at Skegness or just outside at Winthorpe I believe. We, the 21st. shared the camp with a company from West Melton and the first time I was away from home. Introduced to the joys of peeling potatos and onions then sleeping under canvas in a couple of blankets on a palliasse, (sack of straw). After a greasy, bacon and eggs breakfast with door step slices of bread, we went swimming in the North Sea and called it bathing parade. Happy memories.

Hi Ralph, Its good to hear your memories of camp. Do you have any photos of camps? It would be lovely to see them. I know Eric Foster from our company has loads of camp photos of Bridlington & Skegness camps & I am on one blowing a bugle about the age of 4. I haven't been able to get hold of them to scan though.
Best wishes for a happy Christmas & a prosperous 2012.
I would like to wish all grimethorpians near and far a merry christmas and a prosperous New Year (2012).
When I was a kid on New Year's Eve we would go round the neighbour's singing this little ditty ,
Happy new year, Happy new year, plenty of money and a cellar full of beer a horse and a gig and a good fat pig to serve you all next year. Followed by :
Hole in my pocket Hole in my shoe can you spare a copper or two,if you haven't got a penny a hapenny will do.
Then knock on the door.
Did anyone else do this?

Re, the East House my grandparents moved out shortly before the shooting. Obviously they knew everyone involved.
The water tank used to be opposite ours and Knowles house. you might remember it was where we built our bonfires, it was a round area covered in cinders.
I was on the internet the other day, and found out, which was the last house to be demolished on Cyclops st?.

That's amazing, does anybody know what approx date this was took? also, a lot of people might not know is that Cyclops Street kind of carried on parallel with Grimesthorpe Rd and just disappeared into Smithy's field in the early days, there might have even been the remains of wooden huts down that part of the street, (some people have mentioned seeing wooden huts or the remains of on Petre Street). Would the shop still have been 'Thanes' at this particular time?

Hi
My dad - Keith Ager, has asked me to try and help him find his cousins - Mavis, Alf, Carol and Philip Webster. Who I imagine are the same people mentioned in your post. Do you have any idea where they may be living now, who they married etc. I would love to put my dad back in touch with them - he was particularly close to Mavis.
Any help that you could give would be gratefully received.

Hiya,
Thank you so, so much for this. I think I now have an address for Alf - do you know if his wife is called Jeanette by any chance? Will drop him a line and hopefully I can put my dad back in touch with his cousins!
Thanks again for your help

Hello Everyone. I hope you all had a good Christmas.
I've spoken to Allan Billam today, he asked me to pass on his thanks for all the cards and letters sent by the good people of Grimesthorpe. He was not very well over Christmas but is feeling better now.
Best wishes for 2012. Don't forget, in future, our reunions are to be held on the last Fridays in March and October. Regards, Ralph.

In the photo, Huts 2. The huts can be seen, looking from Grimesthorpe Road, over Petre Street.
They were known as, 'The Munitions Huts' and built during the First World War to house the migrant steel and factory workers helping the war effort. I think many of them came as refugees from Belgium.
The other 'Huts' were either side of Tyler Street, Brightside.
Didn't Sharpe st run off Crown Hill one below Botham st and was a dead end?
Sharpe Street did run off Crown Hill, or Carlisle Road to give it correct name. It ran parallel with Botham St. and was a dead end. If it had continued, it would have joined up with, the dead end of Ruthin St. This is according to my 5/- map of Sheffield.
Re, the huts.
The road was a continuation of Cyclops st. According to the Oracle, (my auntie Dot), the huts were probably built for prisoners of war, but were used as homes for people who had been bombed out of their houses. My mother always used to call them the prefabs. This was before they built the prefabs on Margate Drive, which were built about 1947/8, I know the dates because I finished up in hospital playing on the building materials they were using. I believe the huts were demolished by then.

I haven't seen Michael Martin for a couple of years, he wasn't in the best of health. He had worked at the Asda in Chapeltown. He had two younger brothers, Anthony and Kevin. I don't know where they are living now
My family lived on the Petre St huts before I was born, they were originally ammunition huts, and then converted into homes for people who had lost their homes in the blitz. They were burnt to the ground sometime before 1943, mainly because they were rat infested and filthy places, that is the story from my brother who lived there.

Great picture, large house must be Hallcar house ( not Tavern)with the cricket field behind it. The huts may have gone in the early 40's but the corrigated shed was there at least to the late 60's , and behind it was one of the sites for the barrage balloons

Jean J
I remember my Grandad saying something like that every new year.
I hope everyone had a lovely christmas, didn't get chance to get on due to working nights :( so I'll take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy new year x

If my math is correct #103 Botham St would have been the second yard from the top on the right hand side looking down the street. The 'Hall' family with the (twin girls) would have been at #105 they were related to the 'Jones' family with the (two boys Alan and Dennis) at #103.

When I started at Grimesthorpe Junior in September 1957, I remember Miss Hanson, and Mr Ambler were there , also Miss Carter was my first class teacher .
Robert Jackson is/was the self same regular radio sports presenter on Radio Sheffield. Although I cannot remember him at Grimesthorpe, our Ken knew him in later life , he was a craft teacher who then left to become a greengrocer before his Radio Sheffield stint, what a good presenter he was too.

Re, photo of Mrs Thane, I was talking to my grandchildren about money over Christmas, about pre- decimal coins, and I was telling them how I used to go to the corner shop and buy 4 Fruit Salad sweets or 4 Black Jacks for a halfpenny or two for a farthing. God I am old.

brian1941 03-01-2012, 19:08 Dido, yes i do remember cus when mrs prosser went to work there me and some
other lads use to hang about in their house with david, all we did was playing records

Hang down your head Tom Dooley. Hang down your head and cry.

Yes dido, got the c/d Tom Dooley by the kingston trio, another one
stuck in my mind, Bird dog by everly brothers that all David prosser
would play but it was a good un.
Use to laugh when mrs prosser came home from working in shop, she`d
come in through back door into kitchen you could hardly see her for smoke.
She'd come in room and play hell with david, she'd get onto him for
not signing on and have you clean yer bedroom- what yer been doing all day.
But she never said for us to keep away from house, so we got fags out.
Them days. :hihi::hihi::hihi:

Weeble1966 07-01-2012, 12:12 Is the bus on Cyclops St, and the Rentokil van on Sharpe St, if so, did Michael Sharman live opposite the shop on Sharpe St?
The bus is turning from Cyclops St onto Margate St.
I used to live just over the hill from there and remember the shop being the last to go. It was owned by Cyril Sharp and his wife, which is probably what geotom was thinking of for the street name.
There used to be a phone box just out of shot to the left which moved to the top of Whiteways Drive.
The buses only started running up Botham/Cyclops/Grimesthorpe in April 1972, not long after Margate Drive flats were built but probably as the demolitions were going on. Before that it was straight on Petre St and right on Hunsley St.
Does anyone remember the dates when the surrounding streets were demolished?
At the junction of Botham St/Cyclops St/Grimesthorpe Rd, I remember Sullivan's off license and the chippy half-way down Botham St and have more distant memories of the shops on Carlisle Rd.
I remember Hill Top Dairy ice cream vans parked at the top of the street at the opposite side of Hunsley St from Petre St. I think they later moved to somewhere off Attercliffe common. Were they related to Oldfields dairy/frozen business?
Regards

HI there, it was good to see Mick Buck, Brian Gill and Keith Lemm yesterday albeit under sad circumstances. It was at my cousin's funeral - Mike (Mac) McDonald. It was a very moving service and good to see so many people there. Including the 'guard of honour' from the BB. I was in the church league bowling team many years ago with Mac - we were Petre's Angels. Brian, what was your team called? something to do with sinners praps!

Please pass on my condolences to June and
the family.
Such happy memories from Little Lane xxx
Hi everyone,
Here is a folder containing my leaving 'photo of form 3F1 Owlerlane Secondary Modern, taken in 1958 (I have all the names but have left them out for you to have some fun first!), and 'photos of the Infants, Secondary Modern and Intermediate schools, which I took from Earl Marshall Road in about 1990.

Brian's team name was The Sermon Sleepers (can't think where that came from) Some of the other team names as of 1968, were "Pilgrims, Philistines, Corinthians, Petre's Angels, Romans, Holy Terrors, Sine Nomine, Charioteers, Righteous Bros., Numbers, Exodus. That was the old Church Bowling League, made up of teams from Wesley Hall Grimesthorpe Road, Petre Street, Hatfield House Lane, Burncross and Mount Pleasent Methodist chuches. The league is still in existance today but under the name The Friendship League. I'm led to beleive that it is the country's Longest surviving bowling league, It's about 44 years since it was formed. Nowadays there are only 6 teams still bowling, including Linda, My wife. Brian Gill still bowls, as far as I know he is the only original mmember still bowling. Mike McDonald being another of the bowlers from the early years of the league.
Our thoughts and sympathies go out to all his family and friends.

Hi johnpm, I am not a grimesthorpian but I do read this thread all the time. I have posted a couple of things on it in the past. I'm a Page Hall/Firth Park lad and I know a few regulars on here. The point of this reply concerns the photo "Life boys at Staithes about 1964." On the photo there is a couple of people I knew. Roy and Francis Butler and Ken Towell. I worked with Roy for a few years and we were mates. The point is that in 1964 I was 17yrs old and knowing that Roy is a couple of years older than me that would have made him 19 or maybe 20 in 1964. Also Ken would be about the same age as me ( or older) so I think you may be a little bit out with 1964. I would put it a good few years earlier. I hope you don't mind me commenting on it.

Some very sad news in the Sheffield Star tonight. The announcement that Stephen Highfield has passed away. Ex Grimesthorpe lad and contributor to the threads. I grew up with Steve through Owler Lane Infants School, Grimesthorpe Junior School and Owler Lane Secondary School, being in the same class for many years. He is on the school photos on pages 204/205. Any one who knows him will recognise him
We both went to Wesley Hall Methodist Church and the youth club and concert party. Steve was always full of fun and clowning about. The concert party rehersals were an entertainment in themselves with him around. After church services on Sunday nights, like all good Methodists we all went down to the Ball Inn for "supper" I havn't see Steve for many years but I spoke to John Dale, his brother-in-law on many occasions
Our thoughts and sympathies go out to Janet, his wife, and all his Family and friends

Nice try :hihi:
Great photos though.
After a quick glance, I saw Mr Cotterill and
That old gentleman George that I once mentioned
who used to just sit quietly in the church hall whilst
the kids were at Sunday School. I don't think I will
ever forget him.

Hi everyone. As many of you would have attended the Owler Lane Schools, I thought you may be interested in the 'photos below, which I took in 1999 from the Earl Marshall Road side (they are also on Earl Marshall Secondary forum).
There are two of the Infants school and also two of the Secondary, with the Intermediate just visible to the left on one of these.
I felt the need to capture these images just in case I turned up there one day to find the schools demolished.
Anyone know the date they came down?

not suffering too much today xx
brian1941 29-01-2012, 16:59 Re, photo of Mrs Thane, I was talking to my grandchildren about money over Christmas, about pre- decimal coins, and I was telling them how I used to go to the corner shop and buy 4 Fruit Salad sweets or 4 Black Jacks for a halfpenny or two for a farthing. God I am old.
I know Mrs Prosser worked there for a while and my Mother used to clean there.
------
Hi dido, I dont remember your mum cleaning for mrs thane, another thought-
do you recall mrs thane having a lodger living at the shop, he was a window
cleaner.

Hi this is John, Stephens brother-in-law. Thanks for the messages posted expressing your sympathy about his death. It is a sad time, but those who were with him at the end, can now take comfort in knowing that he is free from the pain and suffering he bravely endured. He maintained his humour, regularly joking with the medical staff and us up to only a few days before his death which thankfully was quick and very peaceful. The funeral is on Friday 3rd Feb at City Road 12 noon. I am sure that Janet and the family would appreciate anyone from the old days attending. A bit about myself while I'm on. I have only joined today after speaking to Mick. I lived until I was 11 on Birdwell road, all who know Janet, my sister, Stephens wife, will probably remember me. Dad used to be BB captain at Wesley Hall, Mum the GLB captain and youth club leader, (she is still with us, Dad passed away in 2001).
lakerman 29-01-2012, 18:21 Don't know if anyone has mentioned it on here, but Les Cusworth (Ex Reform Chapel BB man) passed away just recently. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Hi John. Welcome to the threads. It,s good to keep in touch with people from Grimesthorpe. Some people I know, Some I don,t Know. But we laugh in the good times and we share the sad times. Im sure there will be plenty of people at Steve's funeral next Friday. On a happier note there are usually 2 Grimesthorpe reunions at the Ball Inn allegedly the last Friday in March and the last Friday in October.I'll be in touch, keep checking the threads. Once again welcome to the threads, I know Steve got a lot of enjoyment from it.

Hello John, so sad to hear of Stephen's death. I had not met him for over 40 years, but as one or two others have mentioned we had some good banter on the Grimesthorpe thread. I remember him in those days as a good bloke, who you could have a laugh with. My condolences to Janet and his family.
You may rememember me (Mick Rawson) and my brothers Ken and Dave, we lived further up Birdwell Road on the left hand side until 1971.

Recollections of Grimesthorpe and Beyond: A long awaited book by the Grimesthorpe author, Alan Billam. The price is £12.99 and will be available next week from The Sheffield Star shop or by phoning Alan Billam on; 01522 811177.
I've had the privilege of reading a preview copy and can assure everyone, you wont be disappointed. It's great read.
Walt and I had an interesting few hours recently at The Sheffield Archive on Shoreham Street and were able to view some of the Parish Records of St.Thomas's Church.
I photographed the first 100 pages of one of the baptisms registers, the dates being between, 5/10/1943 to 25/5/1952.
If you were Christened at St. Thomas's Church between the above dates and would like to see your register entry, please PM me your date of birth and email address.

hahaha! thank you very much Skippy :hihi:
Janice had a brother Malcolm and the Wildgooses were Karen and Andrea-I havent seen or heard from any since I was 8. I was a train bearer in 1961 or 62
We lived in next yard to the Graingers on Birdwell Road. They all moved to Winn Gardens in the early 60's then to Stannington. Malcolm was my best mate at school but he died suddenly a few years ago only in his late forties. Stan (the dad ) also died quite young, lost track of the family now.
