It's certainly wise to have some form of anti-virus software running. Have a look to see if it updates itself periodically. Ideally you need one that does, because new viruses are arriving all the time.

Why buy antivurus software, when you can download things like AVG antivirus which includes automatic updates. Just as good as Norton, except its free.

My ISP, Sheffield based Force 9 www.f9.co.uk have a bolt on security prduct for something like £2.50 a month. It's working a dream and I haven't had a virus through since I began using it. It's interesting to get a couple of dozen emails some days telling me that they have been stopping virus's!

Keep buying your anti-virus software; that way the developers can bring out new viruses to sell you the next piece of anti-virus software. Its all a big scam.

That sounds like something that you would read in the Guardian :P

This may be an old thread but it seems that people out there have some answers to anti virus programs and firewalls etc. I'm looking at buying a Norton System Works on ebay. A 2004 version is available for $45.00 or a 2003 version with updates for $5.00. Are there any major differences? Should I pay the extra money to get a newer version? If I buy the old version do they work and are they a scam? I am assured that they are brand new still in the packaging. If the newer version offers better protection then maybe I should buy that instead of being a cheap skate. But for a fraction of the cost for something the same seems like a bargain to me. What do you think?
What are the differences anyway?

AVG offer an enhanced package - that costs but the free one is ok

I wouldnt touch Nortons with a barge pole!

I work for a large UK bank in their PC Helpdesk department and the amount of problems we get with Norton AntiVirus + Firewall sercurity cocking peoples PC's up is unreal.

Couple that with the fact that it does use a lot of your pc's memory to run as well- ever notice your PC running really slowly and you have Nortons installed?? Thats the problem.

We advise using NOD32 antivirus which at the minute is the best all round antivirus going and also ZoneAlarm firewall which we are still testing at the moment - but are having good results.

Heya... Personally I wouldn't buy any software from ebay unless the rep of the seller was very good...

Beyond that... given that 2005 is now out, you'll probably see 2004 drop in price anyway...

As for the comments on Nortons suitability... I'd agree that the firewall is an absolute pain in the butt... The antivirus has improved quite a bit and I use it on some machines... but in this instance I'd agree with a few other comments on here and grab AVGs free version and Zonealarm too..

They do the job and they don't cost...
