agreed earwiggo:thumbsup: i have never and will never switch sides. my brother though(the one that knows nothing about it) had a time when he switched between wednesday and barnsley:loopy: but whether he can be classed as even a wednesdayite is debatable

being 8 and football mad i jumped at the chance to go to a proper game it was a boring 1-1 draw with hull city and the excitment i had expected just didn't happen unlike the 1977/78 game between blades and mansfield 2 - 0 blades a very young sub called keith edwards and an ageing alan woodward were the scorers :cool::cool::cool: brilliant!

Nope although I know a number of people who have.

That have gone from having everything to do with Wednesday to having everything to do with United.

They are not proper fans and would no doubt switch to supporting another local team if both Wednesday and United dropped into the confrence.

You can’t change sides, if you do you were never a real fan in the first place, blood is thicker than water and football comes a close second.

I had a guided tour of the Lane when i was a kid as i was brought up on the Arbouthorne we went with the school.
I absolutly loved it to be honest as i loved watching footy matches, but was an Owl already having been brought up by a prodominently Wednesday family.
I could never change it would be like somewhere along the lines of a sex change lol.
Not only that id have to have a lot of laser treatment before i could go on the Kop at United lol.:)

First match I went to was Wednesday with my Dad. Then my second match was at Bramall lane with my uncle. Wednesday had hold of me though, through that first match and I would never change.
Did help that Hillsborough was packed and we beat Man Utd. Saw United lose to West Brom in an empty Bramall lane so it wasn't a good comparison. But I was only ever going to be an Owl, due to my immediate family.

family was always red & white but as a kid used to like liverpool (when they won everthing, which might be why i liked em) went to the lane couple of times but not until i was 17 got really into it, now over 20 years later still going!!!!
do know of a ex season ticket holder at the lane who is now on the board at hillsborough though!!

Who may that be?

I wouldn't be surprised if a former chariman was a United season ticket holder at one time. Would explain a few things.

Really? Rather strange if true. Even though stupid, I see why blades and Owls changes code when the other is doing well ( I don't, but you get my drift). Why would Carson come on board when Wednesday are on a downer and United were on the up?

The most famous person to change sides is Derek Dooley! Do not blame him at all. Great player, great bloke and someone the whole of Sheffield will never forget. Don't think many people could get away with it mind, just shows the respect the man had.

Don't know how or why people do it. Even if United were constant premiership Champions and Wednesday were in the conference, I'd still go to watch the Owls. I couldn't change.

i thought they were sold on,didn't want to leave but had no choice.
went to a united game in the box when they played and where given joint man of match awards. when they collected them they had a photograph with a firms md who had sponsored the match.
he said "should never have let them go"
oh forgot he was also on the board at hillsborough!!!!!!

Rather a unique set of circumstances that caused him to, but having read his auto-biography it is clear that he never lost his allegiance with Wednesday, except when they were playing his new employers; and there have been plenty of others put in a similar position.

Never switched allegiance to clubs myself; always Blue; but occasionally went to the Lane with school or work mates; if there was no, or it was impractical to get a Wednesday away game.

I admit to wearing "red" on two occasions:-
The first when I went to Feyenoord with some Dutch friends; and the second in support of the Czechs in the 1996 Euro Championship final, having made friends with some of them after their quarter final..

Derek Dooley had a huge grudge against Wednesday following his sacking on Christmas Eve, he didn't visit Hillsborough again until Sir Bobby Davison night when he was made guest of honour (or something like that!!) by Dave Richards who presented him with a signed Joe Scarborough painting of Hillsborough on the pitch before the match.

I think after that he mellowed towards the club but i got the impression he was very bitter about how he was treated by the club (never been Wednesdays thing a bit of good PR has it!!!).

I only quoted , and again quote what he wrote in his auto-biography (which I have read recently)

Yes he was bitter.
But that was towards certain officials (i.e the band of five who dismissed him, totally unfairly as unanimously agreed by every Wednesdayite) , not the club itself or other people he knew there..

He went back once in the interim period to which you refer, as a neutral for a semi final, but even that was awful and a mistake, because he knew so many people there, an it invoked so many memories.

I suggest you read the book, it is excellent.
The only reason it took me so long to after buying it seven or eight years ago, was it was painful to me personally, as my Father who had played in the same teams alongside Dooley at the YMCA, died around the same time that the book came out, and it took me a long time to get past that chapter.

I found the book very informative about his time both at Hillsborough and at the Lane.

I was waiting to see what wonderful inspiration he came up with for his twenty thousandth post in six months, but he slipped it in when I blinked yesterday afternoon.

The forum administrators have had to extend the disc capacity of the computer system housing it twice already, to keep up with his posting rate.

I think his aim is to get up to an average of 500 a day!

Can't argue with you on the PR front. What we need is someone in their early 30's, with an abundence of knowledge relating to the running of a football club. The successful applicant should be highly intelligent and have a good sense of humour.

So other than the age that lets you out, do you know of anyone who fits the bill? :P

In the book Paul Woolhouse doesn't come out smelling of roses, the way he treated Dooley at your place.
Where as Reg Brearley comes out in a far better light.

I think it highlights that how one bad chairman can destroy a club, and one thing that Owls and Blades can share, is we have both had our fair share of them.

The book is worth reading.
Having done so I am more knowledgable about your club, and probably have more respect as a result.

AS an aside, one thing that comes over, is the amazing numvber of Sheffield derby results which have gone against the form book, since the end of WW2.
