View Full Version : Starbucks on Western Bank
richynomates 30-06-2005, 09:21 It looks like another Starbuck's is about to open in the city on Western Bank. Anyone know when it will be open? I guess it'll be nice to sit in Weston Park with a coffee, as I don't think there's anywhere nearby as of yet, though I could be wrong. Maybe the new improved museum will have something similar...
BoppinBruce 30-06-2005, 09:32 It will open shortly. I think it is bad of council to give planning permission, if indeed they did, to have a Starbucks so close to museum.
The museum will have its own coffee bar but how much will be lost to Starbucks. The Museum coffee bar needs the income to support themselves.
Bad move I think
SilentStatic 30-06-2005, 09:48 I doubt that Coffee Revolution will be too happy either. I don't think a Starbucks is particularly wanted on the main road leading to uni.

I would guess not much, Zoobies is still open and doing good bussiness, with a Starbucks across the road, because it is in the Winter Gardens, a nicer place to sit than Starbucks, the museum will have the same advantage, and people visiting will go there rather than trail to Starbucks.
JonJParr 30-06-2005, 09:55 I'm just glad there is finally some competition for Coffee Revolution! Hopefully it will make them think twice about the rubbish that they serve.
Loud music, slow service, stale coffee and a nice thick sea of secondhand smoke to boot. I hope Starbucks puts them out of business once and for all.

Simple solution: Museum coffee rooms will need to produce great coffee, provide excellent service, and price competitively.
As noted on the "Starbucks Bashing thread", I'm a fully paid up, card carrying Starbucks customer; but I will go elsewhere if the coffee is as good!

Start from the Starbucks by the Winter Gardens, walk up to the Subway on Division Street, turn right onto West Street, turn right at the next Subway, next left and it's straight ahead.
BoppinBruce 30-06-2005, 11:34 Deavon, doesn't Refresh rate for you in Broomhill?

Eh? Refusing an application to put a prison or mental hospital or nuclear power station next to a school, I could understand. Can't see why a Starbucks would need to be restricted.

Alchresearch, another Starbucks on Western Bank would be terrible! Some more jobs created, a bit of competition for the dismal Coffee 'wishy washy Guardian reading' Revolution and a place to meet friends for a drink. Anybody can see they're taking over the world
ps: Does anybody know which smiley I use to soak my post in sarcasm?
Another Starbucks, that can only be good for me, not that I ever go there, but we make all the refrigerated cabinets for them, so they (partially) pay my wages :D

sciencegirl 30-06-2005, 12:49 I think it's great, they'll get loads of trade from the hospitals and people who work at the uni, not to mention all the students. It's only 30secs walk away from Firth Court so I'm a happy bunny! Hope it opens before the students get back while it's still nice and peaceful.
I know Starbucks are supposed to be responsible for all the world's evil but I love those frappucinos.
You could interpret the Starbucks explosion as a sign that the city has finaly been noticed by big companies.

I might have this wrong, but is that the one with the computers? If so I definitely rate it! Very good coffee and very friendly service.
If not, where do mean? I will pop in for a cuppa!
Finally, a starbucks as an alternative to coffee revolution! Couldn't be happier!

Zoobles serve nicer coffee too.
JonJParr 28-07-2005, 10:36 So, I hear that Stabucks is now open on Western Bank- opinions of the decor / atmosphere please....
Erm. It looks like every other Starbucks in the world!!
And there were only 2 people in there when I walked past this morning..
i will have to walk past starbucks to get to work (at the hallamshire!) so im dead chuffed. might be a bit of a pull on the old purse strings, but hell, i'll do an extra shift:D :D :D (all said with tongue in cheek):hihi: :heyhey:
poimaster 28-07-2005, 13:35 you could see the rapid spread of mcStarbucks as well earned notice being paid by the business community. You could see it as a well needed boost in the number of jobs in the city. You could even see it as valuable resource for all those local students needing something more than a nescafe to get to grips with their work.
I see McStarbucks as a disease thats spreading thru this city at a frightening speed!
The way they do business is to capture the market by putting a store within a 5 minute walk no matter where you are in the city centre. Every other shop loses revenue cos there are only so many coffee drinkers. Starbucks being the size it is can subsidise any of their shops that arent doing so well which isnt an option for the indie coffee shops. Within a couple of years they can nolonger compete so they go bust. Which also leaves a prime retail unit up for grabs so McStarbucks can buy that and open ANOTHER of their shops!
And for all you people who are relishing yet another store opening ive got one thing to say....give it a few years. When your sick of the sight of McStarbucks and are dying for a coffee somewhere, anywhere, just not another McStarbucks, you may have a problem. There arent going to be any nice coffee shops left! Thats the way it goes....the indie shops dont stand a chance and the only people with enough money who can compete with McStarbucks is Cafe Nero or some other equally dire corperation.
SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL COFFEE SHOP!!!

sorry, but i work damned hard for my money and i will spend it where i damn well want to.
the local coffee shops around broomhill serve cold, tasteless coffee that they buy from somerfield (you just have to stand outside to see local waitressess dashing out with carriers of salad, coffee, fruit juice) and then charge a bluddy fortune for it. i didnt go in coffee shops until i tried starbucks at meadowhall...and now i do - starbucks at least serve it fresh unlike several coffee shops in broomhill.
  :loopy:
JonJParr 28-07-2005, 13:41 I'm sorry Poimaster, did you not understand my question? I was asking about people's opinions of the decor not another regurgitated and homogenised anti-Starbucks rant. And why do you insist on calling it "McStarbucks"? That's not the name of the chain and they have no connection to McDonald's whatsoever. Your childish name-calling method of trying to convince us that Starbucks is a big bad capitalist chain is, quite frankly, pathetic.

Do you think there will be a coffee shop in the museum once it re-opens ?

Probably, old people like a traditional sit down cup of coffee or tea when they go for a day out. Most of them wouldn't even think of going in Starbucks... there's definitely still a market for it.

Why do you think i was replying to your question jonjparr? You hijacked the thread that was discussing the implications of yet another multinational opening. Dont be so self important , the world doesnt always revolve around you!
I call in McStarbucks because its the McDonalds of the coffee world....its good to point that out to people in my opinion.
The policies (both intentional and unintentional) of McStarbucks are damaging on a local as well as international scale. I havent heard that many people on the forum slating them so i thought i would balance out the praise with a bit of constructive criticism.
Im not trying to convince anyone of the evils of McStarbucks....jus giving my opinion of them after sampling their wares and looking at sites like www.ihatestarbucks.com and if you would like to petition starbucks to stop using genetically modified fair trade beans, improve working conditions, wages and the lives of the people who grow the beans then go to www.organicconsumers.org/starbucks/

I'll just keep drinking my coffee there thanks
petebarker 29-07-2005, 03:23 We don't mind paying for a decent cup of coffee. However we have noticed a distinct difference between the Starbucks on Manchester/ Deansgate, and Manchester Airport.
The quality at Manchester airport is much worse.
Also, there are many other coffee houses that have opened opened up around Deansgate, M/cr, so competition is rather intense.
Now that has got to be a good thing.
KookyKoo 08-08-2005, 17:25 opinions of the place aside, does anyone know what time this Starbucks is open until today?
jdgraham83 09-08-2005, 14:08 anywhere that i can get a frappuccino is all good in my eyes
Not exactly sure but they seem to be taking the chairs/tables in from outside around 5.30
