View Full Version : Memory issue? - PC is grinding to a halt....

I burnt a bunch of photos to CD last year, and haven't accessed them since.

I put the CD in the drive last night and when I accessed the relevant folder via my camera software the PC ground to a halt as it tried to view the 10th or 11th file as thumbnails.

I rebooted and tried to simply access the folder via My computer. It was OK accessing the folder and viewing the files as 'detail', and I could copy a few to the harddrive, but eventually the PC ground to a halt.

I've rebooted the PC since then and am now finding that the 'graphics' performance is sluggish.

As I'm typing this the cursor is lagging about 5 characters behind.
As I play Poker on the web the graphics are lagging behind.
As I scroll down web pages the scroll 'jumps'
As I play MPEGs on Windows Media Player they 'jump'.

To confirm, I had no problem accessing other folders or files on the CD in question, before I accessed the problematic folder.

I'm running
Windows ME
Intel Pent 4 1300Mhz

System information shows......
Total physical mem: 255.43 Mb
Available Physical mem: 232.00 Kb (??!? - big difference?. Looks odd?)
Virtual mem: 2Gb
Available Virtual mem: 1.59 Gb

It seems like a memory/caching problem but I've got no idea how to start troubleshooting it.

Anyone got any ideas?

It seems to be using a lot of memory for Windows ME. Try closing anthing thats running that you dont need. It could also be that the cd is damaged, and its struggling to read it in that particular area. Also try running a disk cleanup, and a scan, just to make sure there is nothing on there thats causing it.

Found it

NKVMON.exe was a running process. It's associated with the Nikon Coolpix software (which I re-installed last night - had to re-install my OS 4 months ago and hadn't got around to the camera software).

Ended the process and the PC is instantly fine - doh!

Funny thing is, this process didn't cause me any problems last time I had the software installed. :suspect:

Still think the folder on the CD might be knacked. Will do some more research.

Cheers Joel....
