My 7 year old boy and I are looking for a couple of fancy rats to add to our household. We're obviously loathe to get them from a pet shop, so we were wondering if there are any Fancy Rat breeders in Sheffield, and indeed any Rat Fanciers willing to share expertise and experiences?

There used to be and still is I believe a massive pet show once a year at Doncaster race course, I went one year and there were some gorgeous rats of every breed, colour and type, and loads for sale plus people taking names for expected litters.

A small animal show is a great way to find out what breed you like and to get right into the whole rat keeping thing.

Rats are lovely animals, you will have to let us know when you get one...oh and pics are law in this group :D

There's a 'small furry' open day on Easter Sunday at my shop on Abbeydale Road - I don't sell animals (don't believe they should be sold in pet shops) but have some experts there to talk to for more info and some friendly ratties to handle. You should be able to find loads out if you wanted to come and we should have some freebies too!

i got my 2 boys from Gleadless Pet Store the Lady there has contact with Nick Mays the rat breeder one of mine is one of his and the other is from a litter she bred her self, Both Gorgeous!!! and very friendly :) xx

Yep there's at least two breeders, one in Sheffield and one in Doncaster. The one in Doncaster I know off the top of my head is Blairwitch Rattery: http://www.freewebs.com/lisa-blair/ Teh one in Sheffield is on the forum, but the name has gone at the moment!

I'm hoping to be at Pawsitively Paws with my softest little girlie (well actually - she's quite big), and maybe my nuetered boy so feel fee to come and say hello and ask any questions! :thumbsup: Lotti can vouch for how cuddly one of my girls is - she's positively embarrasing at times! :hihi: :love:

Have you considered rescues at all or are you definitely looking for a breeder? Good on you not going to a Pet Shop though!

The Nick Mays? Crikey, he wrote the book on Rats (literally). I had no idea he was local!

We're keen to take on a couple of young does, but we hadn't considered rescue rats.

Well I went up there on Saturday and spoke to the lovely lady who ran the shop. She introduced us to the rats upstairs and was very knowledgeable and helpful, I'm looking forward to getting a pair or trio of rats at the end of the month and I'm looking forward to going up there again.

I did mail a rattery but got no reply yet.

Anyone know when the Rat Show is on at Gleadless Townend this month? The lady at Gleadless Pets mentioned it, but I clean forgot when.

Anyone know a rat breeder in Sheffield as the ones previously recommended on the forum don't seem to be around any more. Can't find Nick Mays, the pet shop at Gleadless don't breed any more, and Vicky's internet link isn't working

Thanks for getting in touch so quickly. Laura already has the cage set up and ready and is looking forward to getting some new friends. We had a look at the litter on the web page and they are adorable! Laura is interested in a pair of females and is very fond of dumbo rats. She's not quite sure if they are both dumbo rats but loves the pair shown in picture 24 of the 26 (not sure if they are males or not though).

Whereabouts are you in Sheffield, and would it be possible to come to have a look at them please? We might be able to make it tomorrow afternoon if you are available.

I have just replied to your email - but for completeness, i am a muppet that hasn't updated her site - the kittens on the website have all been homed now (the ones on pg24 were does). My next litter is (hopefully!) due 5th January, and the kittens will be ready to go mid February. :)

It would be awesome if she is able to wait, I have a lilliput dumbo doe in my group and she is absolutely adorable. She is also a complete idiot but we won't dwell on that! She's first up for snuggles, loves to explore and has a bizarre earlobe fetish. :love: She is a monster!

Lillyland - Thanks for the reply - a few weeks to wait isn't too long I guess as she's been hounding me about it for months but it's a shame cos she'd have liked the chance to have more quality time with them over Christmas to help them settle in their new home.

This litter is between lilliput dubai (who isn't yet on the site, but is carolina's sister - a black dumbo) and atlas london calling (blue dumbo). I am also going to be mating atlas samos (blue topear, carrying dumbo) to either don, shunamite baba o riley or atlas straight outta compton as soon as she is in heat, so february will hopefully see lots of babies!
I will get on updating my site asap!

And hels, the vacantness of my dumbos is what makes them mine.. haha! They are cute tho :P
