The original thread about banning football was a tongue-in-cheek extreme comparison of the two and of course banning is never going to be anyway feasible. This has somewhat backfired in an attempt to get people visit this thread. The way I written the original thread was me being :loopy:



Footballers are overpaid for what they really do; however, it is obvious that the club have to be pay big money to keep top-flight footballers at their clubs to be successful and win cups/promotion/stay at the top, but at what price?

The premiership clubs are healthy but the lower clubs are struggling to survive and are debt ridden.

How many people have been driven away from football clubs because of high prices? I know a few people who have been regular going fans that cannot afford or tolerate high prices.

How do you see football in 10 years time at the current rate of record breaking pay?

How many football club will go into receivership?

What you it mean to you if your football club no longer exists one morning because of bankrupty?

what a nob . Lets just pay lots of social workers,teachers etc. to be on the long term sick and run the country into the ground that way eh? At least football is payed for by people at the turnstiles, sky t.v. money etc. not my taxes.

Football is paid for by the fans. It's their money, let 'em do what they like with it.

Taxes pay the police to stand around football grounds so rival fans don't start fighting, wasting thousands of pounds and valuable police time - don't act like everyone involved in the sport is innocent.

Incorrect, the club has to pay for matchday police operations.

As for footballers being overpaid, I don't think they are - the players are what bring the money in. Take Beckham for example - Real Madrid make a packet from him, a hell of a lot more than they pay him.

No, the club only pay for policing inside the ground. We pay for the hundreds of police overtime hours for policing the city centre, train station, etc.

They don't, and that still doesn't excuse taking up police time on such pointless events as football matches. There aren't enough police on the streets as it is, so taking a huge force of them to police hooligans allows crime to prosper. I'm not saying ban football games, just recognise the problems they cause.

I used to go to lots of matches as a kid but if I had the opportunity to go now I wouldn't because I don't feel it's value for money.

I feel there will be a cap on the wages not too far into the future. Sky TV will seek to pay less money for TV rights at some point which will force clubs to ajust their spending patterns and wage structures.

Quite a few clubs will go into receivership IMO because they have simply over spent on bad investments and not made any provision for the future. The only hope for these clubs will be takeover bids or been taken in by bigger clubs.

Finally, I wouldn't like to see any football club go under. I class football clubs as peices of history and they should be preserved.

All police officers inside a football ground on matchday are paid for by the club and they are all officers who would otherwise be off duty.

Fair enough we cough up some for those outside but that's the same at all public events.

Rugby isn't heavily policed, ice hockey isn't heavily policed, basketball isn't heavily policed; just football. Don't get me wrong, i don't hate football, i like the sport, i just can't stand people hiding and excusing the bad points that come with it.

I dont mind football, it is the underage groupies (that write in text-speak that I cant understand), that I would like to ban. At least off here, so that they cant encourage others to follow their lifestyles.

I dont like the things they talk about (is he married, is he single, is she really going out with him?) because I am scared to death about what might happen to them. This talk about hanging around footballers just because they are "premier" etc.

And one claimed to be a journalist with 10 years experience

Most girls get crushes on unattainable "poster" boys, popstars etc but the difference with these are that they only have to go and hang out outside the training grounds to make personal contact.

I dont think we should be encouraging them.

I know I sound ancient and miserable and really I am not, I wouldnt mind if it was Becks they wanted because they wouldnt be able to put themselves in his path, him being so far away.

But if any Sheffield girl bit off more than she could chew, which wouldnt have to be much if you are only 15, I would be so hurt and sorry for her.

Sorry for an unfortunate metaphor, but I expect you will forgive me, it is a bit too emotive for me to think of something better.

When I think of that poor girl in London who got into such a terrible situation with a group of footballers, it could happen every night in Sheffield if you read some of the threads on here.

During the football season a large number of Police seem to be required on match days for "football duty". Can you confirm how a workable balance is put in place to ensure that there is ample police cover in other areas?
Police Officers who perform duties at football matches are drafted in on rest days and are super numerary to the normal cover provided by police districts on a day to day basis. These duties are paid for by the football clubs.
Then why, on the BBC1 documentry about South Yorkshire Police a few months ago, did it show a street force of around 10 police officers because the rest were at a United match?

Because Sheffield's active police force at any one time is about 10 officers. I can't remember the last time I saw one of them doing something useful...
