View Full Version : Loving home needed for a small dog

I've had some chats with a new member about the sad situation she has found herself in.

Her elderly uncle has to go into a residential care home, but she needs to find a good home for his dog.

She is a small cross breed that is spayed but will need a full course of vaccinations to bring her up to date. She is approximately 10/11 years old and very affectionate. As she has lived with an elderly gentleman, she isn't used to other animals or small children and I'm sure that Debs will post to clarify how much contact she has had with either.

This little dog sounds absolutely perfect for an active pensioner. I know they are out there and someone will find themselves with a loving companion if they take up this offer.

It's a terribly difficult situation to be in and I hope that we can find a loving home for her, I'm sure her owner would settle into his home with a lighter heart knowing that his dog has too.

Hi every one

just trying to find nice new loveing home for lovely Jessie Doodle, sad circumstances, not only elderly uncle going into nurseing home, but in a week or so, Jess wont have a home...this is getting very desperate and upsetting for me and my mother, we already have an 11yr old fine pooch, who suffers from Cardiomyopathy, so cant take Jess on, we are at our wits end, we do not want to have to take Jess to the big sleep, its just not fair, she is healthy, active, loveing......if any one knows of any one that would be able to give her a new home or help in any way..Ie Foster home, till i could get perm home sorted... More details can be found on www.preloved.co.uk. Thanks all!:help:

if you type 'Jessie' into the search on the main page, it comes up first :)

Jess looks a little sweetie, time is a little short really and as you probably don't know everything about her there seems little point in filling out the template at the moment, just to clarify, on preloved you say that she is 13 but on here you say 10/11, might be good if you could find out her age a bit more accurately.

The next step I think is to get her advertised as quickly as possible in as many places as you possibly can, firstly start by pm'ing rainrescue on here and ask if she might feature Jess on her rescue website, then contact Rotherham dog rescue (http://www.rotherham-dog-rescue.co.uk/inf_07.htm) (the link is to the contact form) and ask as well, you will be able to leave the dog in her own home to advertise on both sites, then join Dog pages (http://www.dogpages.org.uk/forums/index.php?showforum=27) (the link is to the relevant part where you need to post) you need to become a member first, though I will post for you if you give me enough details if you would like?
Plenty to be going at there I think, but get on to it all asap as time is not on your side now.
Good luck :)

Hello, have you tried the other rescue centres around the area. I can't believe that you're even suggesting that you might 'have to' have her killed.
Try Sheffield dog Rescue on 0114 255 0469‎ or 01246 568742‎, south yorkshire animal rescue on 0114 234 9656‎. ALSO RAIN RESCUE is a small group of volunteers who's aims are to help pets that have no owner EMAIL admin@rainrescue.co.uk PHONE 0845 3978812.

Seriously i am pretty outraged. Do some research, there are many rescue centres out there. keep trying!!!! Meanwhile it would be worth posting more information - has anyone actually tried putting her with another dog? is she known to chase or attack cats? Has anyone tested what she's like with kids? I'm sure these are all things that you can try out. the answers may make it much easier to rehome her. If having done EVERYTHING possible you still cant find a place for her please contact me as I could possibly foster her but she would have to deal with another dog and there are often children & babies visiting. It would also help if you posted a phone number. You can contact me on 07738392005 if you need to as i am rarely on the forum.

Rain Rescue are not taking any more dogs into their care - due to lack of help from volunteers - so they aren't an option.
Maybe the RSPCA could help - or the oldies

Rain Rescue can offer that u can email a picture and a write up and we will put her up on the website which may get some people to help.
this is just one of many desperate dogs needing homes - hopefully as you have her best interest at heart - you will keep trying - its a very sad situation in our area.

Well fishpole works with Sheffield dog rescue and i am sure she would have offered help if they could.
Have you tried the oldies club? http://www.oldies.org.uk/

What is she like with other dogs i.e. just not used to them or aggressive? Would you be prepared to have her fostered with a forum member while a home was sought but with you covering vets bills etc. if any were needed?

Fishpole

I'm sure Sheffield Dog Rescue would help out Adz, but I was hoping that someone might step forward to avoid her having to go into kennels at all. We know how the oldies get stuck once they're in and that's heartbreaking.

Forest, I think that's a very kind offer to foster as the situation is rather desperate, which is probably why there is an element of panic to Deb's post. I agree there are steps that should be taken to establish how Jessie would react in certain situations. Perhaps Debs needs some guidance from us all as to how she can take it forward from here.

I'm sure Cassie won't have to be put to sleep but I can sympathise with the panic and I feel terribly sorry for her owner.

I've already suggested Cinnamon Trust and thought today of the Oldies Club, so you beat me to it Adz. :)

The timeline does seem to be short, but with a calm approach it could be achieved.

Sorry Fishpole :)

You know where me and my 2 old crocs are if you need me :D, would SDR help but her go straight to a foster rather than into kennels?

Debs1

Yes i would be more than happy to cover any vets bills, allso pay for her food, there is nothing wrong with Jess, she really is a nice all round dog, its just a shame that her owner is going in to a care home..

Thank you for your offer of help, i was rather upset, when i read that you were outraged, believe you me, i too am not a happy person, as i seem to be the only person in this dogs family, who is at least trying to fined her a home, her immediate family just arnt bothered, my phone bill is through the roof, i have rung and emailed every dog resue that i know of, she is advertised in shops, on the net..I am looking after her at the moment in my uncles house, but he is due to go in to a care home and then his council house will be gone, you will be pleased to know that i took her to a friends house today, to see how she would interact with another dog and she was absolutly fine, she even had a chat with a Staffy in the park. She is a happy, well trained dog who just needs a home. Thank you for your concern. Deb

Sorry for what Adz? :)

I wish there was a foster pool that we could all pull on but sadly that isn't the case. That would be the ideal solution given that time is short.

Debs, you're trying your best, don't be downhearted. It's very difficult to determine the big picture in a few posts on a forum and it's only by keeping the conversation open, that snippets of information come to the fore.

Did you get in touch with Rain Rescue to put Cassie on their website? Have you looked at any of the suggestions put forward ie Dog Pages, Cinnamon Trust or the Oldies Club? They are all very good suggestions to avoid Cassie going into kennels, which is really what I am hoping can be avoided right now.

The Halifax RSPCA run a brilliant oldies scheme - give them a call and see if they can help.
We will put her on our site with the next update.
I so hope it works out for her.

Thank you 2 every one, who has been kind enough to post, concern/advice and help...but i am getting no were fast! Tis a sad situation (kennels full!) at the end of the day kennels shouldnt be full, dogs should be in a nice warm, loveing home, surrounded by peeps who love and adore them.....but i shall carry on trying to find Jessie Doodle the home she deserves..X

Debs1 what is your thoughts about how she would be with other dogs? I know she isn't used to them but what is she like on walks? I have 2 very dog friendly 1 male and 1 female both are older.

Fishpole - Would SDR consider me as a foster for her? Adz is thinking about it so no guarantees yet, but i couldn't do it without rescue back up and our time limit would be until July when we go on holiday for a week. Let me know what you think.

Debs I think you are doing a great job with this dog. Knowing now that she is ok with others will make her easier to find a home for. If it wasnt for my old blind collie I would be very tempted to take her on myslef. We rescued our elderly collie when she was between 10 -12 possibly older and four years on she is still giving us a huge amount of pleasure even though she is blind partially deaf and has all but lost her sense of smell :)

Keep us updated I have been asking around for you and now we know she is ok with other dogs it should make things easier.

Well done for trying for this lovely golden oldie!! :)

If she seems OK with other dogs then I could help foster in short term if necessary. Do let me know if you want to introduce her to my active female 16 year old dog. I'm not really as harsh as my previous post suggested, i am just grieving having had my beloved 18 year old euthanased in January. It was the most traumatic and awful decision I've ever had to make, but so many people seem to take these things lightly...

I'm sorry for your loss Forest, your explanation of your earlier post hopefully demonstrates how we can all react to what we see written, when there is often more to the response than meets the eye. Forums are great, but it's never easy to get the true picture from a couple of postings and often the written word just isn't enough, particularly when people are upset.

Adz, SDR will fully support you if you take Cassie in as a foster, subject to Mr Adz's agreement, of course. :)

Debs, it seems you may have found one, possibly two, foster homes for Cassie, so perhaps you could get in touch with them. Please bear in mind that they are temporary foster homes and Cassie will need to find a permanent home. It is still important to actively try to help her find one and it would be fabulous news to report to your uncle.

To everyone else that has offered to spread the word too, keep up the good work.

Debs1
01-04-2009, 00:01
Arr So sorry Forest, we never in the begining, when getting an animal think that we will have to go through it, i have lost 3 dogs, all fantastic, 1 cat (18.5yrs) and the worst day in my life when i had to have my 26yr old pony put to sleep....its never nice and its not easy...I think of my beloved pets often and believe me! U do end up thinking of the good times U had with them, i wish you well x

Fishpole
01-04-2009, 20:53
Agreed! We know when we take them on that we will probably outlive them but we still do it because they are just so fabulous. The pain of losing them is just so hard to bear and my heart goes out to anyone who experiences that.

It's why my parents decided not to have another dog after Jamie died. It really is a shame that they've been without a dog for nearly 15 years, they could have given another dog a lovely home, but they simply cannot cope well with the heartbreak at their age. It's an added reason why I think it's important to ensure that Jessie finds a good home, her owner must be worried for her future, her having been his companion.

Have you all been talking behind the scenes? Do let me know if SDR needs to remain involved at all.

Rainrescue
01-04-2009, 21:07
We aren't involved here other than putting the guy on the site

i would definately try halifax rspca - as they sound a good bet to help
and we would help if they need anything doing to get him in there

Adz

Well Mr Adz does stuggle with this kind of thing as he is a lazy beggar and he also doesn't like disrupting our 2 which i suppose is fair enough although they are a very accomodating pair, and we do work but.

Fishpole and Debs we have said if there really is nowhere else and it looks like she is going to go into kennels then she can come here on a foster basis.

I have fostered for the Oldies Club in the past. They are in my opinion a very good and thorough rescue homechecking etc. The dog will have a full M.O.T at the vets and given any treatment before being rehomed.
I had a 13 yr old Llhasa apso on fosterand he found a great home and is still going strong aged 14 yrs.
Hope this offers you some reassurance and peace of mind. J x
