I'm thinking of buying an electric scooter (http://www.infomat.net/infomat/rd741/rd1/database/scootelectric/index.asp)
but wondered if
a/ would I have to have a drivers licence?
b/ where can I get one in this area?
(a scooter - not a driver licence)

You know, I have heard people critiscise electrically powered vehicles as 'self-defeating', in a 'green' sense, because the power they use is generated using fossil fuels, or through nuclear fission. However, I heard on the radio this morning that France (I think) has just brought on-stream the world's first power station operating via nuclear fusion, which, of course, is about as green as you can get. (Well, wind power is probably greener, but at the moment you need to smother a national park with turbines to power a toothbrush for five minutes).

Nuclear Fusion? Has the future arrived? Are we saved?

PS Soz about grossly miscalculated 'fat gag' last week, Don!

The thing they have agreed to build in france is still not confirmed as being viable- most scientists give it a 50/50 chance of sucess but with a initial set-upcost of 6.5billion most agree that it is a waste of resources.

It is the same as a 50cc Moped.

You need a licence.
EITHER:
Compulsory basic training [CBT] + Bike Licence

OR:
If you have a Full Driver's Licence issued before 1st February 2001 you can ride one now (but are recommended to go on a moped course)

OR:
If you have a Full Driver's Licence issued after 1st February 2001 you have to take a moped course before you can ride one.

Obviously you will also need Road Tax, MOT (when applicable) and Insurance.

Cheers CGK

That's what I was after. Ta very much ;)

Sanman, on the site I linked there's an encouraging bit that says:
BENEFITS OF E-RIDING
No petrol, no exhaust fumes, no smell

Extremely quiet

Relaxing to ride

Virtually maintenance-free

Exempt from road tax

Exempt from congestion charge

Equivalent of 1,000+ mpg

£200 Government grant on some models

Which is nice

So it's not a moped as such, it's battery powered.
Which is why I wondered about licensing n that

DK :)

That looks like just the very thing for blatting up and down Breck lane on, does that Don.

I've thought about a scooter a time or two for the little trips down to Tescos and back. The only thing stopping me is the thought of someone my size on a scooter fills me with dread.

"EC Vehicle Type Approval - Vehicle Type Approved as a moped under 92/61/EEC; type approval # e9*92/61*0119*00"

Think you have to have a licence to drive any kind of powered vehicle on the public highway.....not sure about thos dinky electric invalid go-karts.
