View Full Version : Pets at Home selling reptiles
MARY POPPINS 27-03-2009, 17:09 Just been to Pets at Home at Drake house, and they were setting up a new section for the sale of reptiles, certainly hope someone there knows how to look after them and offer the proper advise to people buying them, though if the reports I've heard about rabbits and guinea pigs bought from there are anything to go by I very much doubt it.
hels1977 27-03-2009, 17:36 Probably not - no one needs to be qualified or informed and they consistently give out poor advice that costs lives. Poor reptiles, now they're a commodity just like rabbits, gpigs, mice, hamsters & rats to name but a few.
kellybum 04-04-2009, 18:51 i dont think they will have an ounce of knowledge,i just been to pets at home at drakehouse and thought exactly the same thing.
Once had the misfortune to go in their branch on Chesterfield Road. I immediately noticed that their stock of Blackamoors (Big, Black Bulgy Eyed Fish) were suffering from "Whitespot" (Usually a stress induced parasitic infection). I informed a nearby member of staff and he seemed totally ignorant of the terms Blackamoor, Whitespot and Fish. Personally I wouldn't let PAH empty my Wheelie Bin, let alone let them care for a live creature.
Yeap i gotta agree with you Harry O, i unfortunetly worked for Pets at Home for a VERY VERY short time not a branch in Yorkshire though. Ive been educating myself with herpatology for about 16 yrs and i still am.
Alot of customers used to come in and ask about reptiles ( that branch only did a small about of equipment ) and to be honest i dont know how i didnt get the sack before i left because some of the staff were giving the most stupid advice id ever heard and i used to interupt them - Couldnt keep my mouth shut.
It makes me sick to my stomach that animals, reptiles etc are being sold under the wrong husbandry and care - which means that ultimately its a death sentence.

Sadly 100s of reptiles needlessly die every year through shops giving out the wrong advice and selling inappropriate equipment with them..if they are going to sell them they should employ somebody with experience with them:rant:
I am also informed middletons pet and garden center are now selling reptiles too..I hope they do a better job with them than they do with there poor fish:rant:
Its just WRONG and totally laughable that there is no law to stop IDIOTS giving information about something they no nothing about.
But i suppose i could same about people that used to come to up to me and say, " i want a lizard, " so id say ok what kind of lzard, and the reply would be ," i dont know a green one, that will stick to my wall." And i swear that would happen nearly daily,
Its not hard now adays to research the care of any reptile or animal. When i first got interested in reptiles 16 yrs ago, i researched with books and more books. Until i knew i could clearly look after and keep my chosen lizard which was a leopard gecko at the time.
Most homes now have got internet, it isnt hard to research, theres alot more reptile shops ( specialised shops ) to buy books from. I dont get people who want to start keeping a reptile but dont research their chosen future pet first. Rant over!! lol

cooljules 07-04-2009, 20:53 What do you mean by problem animals coming through your door Chaz?same as i get, bad advice when they buy the animal so keep it like told to for ages...but i guess with chaz when they come for food, or a new bulb etc. it comes out how they are being kept, say without uv, no vits, wrong substrate etc etc.
half of the turtles i have, were bought without being told how HUGE the females etc, size of Igs etc etc..bought as little cute things.
knighthawk 07-04-2009, 21:35 What do you mean by problem animals coming through your door Chaz?People buy them without a clue to there care needs or just get fed up with them..the next thing you no there going to the nearest rep shop hoping to sell them:rant:

Yep, now you unlucky souls get to join the vast number of small furry animal rescues (I do appreciate they're food for your pets but they're pets to us) from people who buy on impulse, recieve appauling advice which damages the health and happyness of the creature. Places like PAH have been doing it for years - I really hope a massive stink is kicked up over this from the reptile fanciers, I really really do.
It's just so upsetting.
cooljules 08-04-2009, 08:45 hi you took my turtle a few month ago is she ok i lived on arbourthorne and was heavily pregnant at the time
ah YOU was heavily pregnant...ahhh thought you meant the turtle!
yes its still here, as is the 1st one people look at when they come in, but i had it confirmed, it wasnt a american soft shell like you was told, its a chinese soft shell, and enjoys eating, mice, rats, hamsters etc along with insects, worms, and various bugs and dried food.
I had another one arrive a few weeks ago, even larger....but this type cannot be kept together as they will fight like mad...unless i had asian river to keep them in.

People should use there heads for once and do a little research before they go out and purchase reptiles

monkwood 08-04-2009, 22:09 theres only certain stores in PAH doin reptails
chaz thommo 09-04-2009, 06:30 give it 12 months, the antis will form a dossier of mistreatment cases attribute it to pets at home and get them banned from it. Mark my words this has all happened before........
hels1977 09-04-2009, 07:54 theres only certain stores in PAH doin reptails
And that makes it okay? PAH have been selling live animals from rodent farms and other unscrupulous breeding practises (in my view) with often poor advice leading to poor quality of life and even death for years. Selling reptiles which are even more specialised than many furries (although people underestimate the needs of furries) is just one more step into a very bad place.

I hope you're right, but I suspect you're not. :(
CHEZZFAYE 14-04-2009, 23:15 spoke to a friend who works at pets at home they are eventually putting them in every store as they have had 2 get a licence 4 em
cooljules 14-04-2009, 23:33 spoke to a friend who works at pets at home they are eventually putting them in every store as they have had 2 get a licence 4 em
so who will be in charge of the care of them in each shop? all need differant care, differant set ups etc and let us know when they finally do... we will go in and act dumb and ask questions and see what response we get and let you know...sort of like a mystery shopper
CHEZZFAYE 15-04-2009, 10:42 they wont have a clue i can tell u that, theyl learn about them with crap pets at home info sheets. hes not sure when they are gona bein all shops but it should be in the next 2 years
That thought makes me feel sick to the bottom of my stomach.
