We are trying to piece together the history of the mines and shafts on Hunshelf Bank - Stocksbridge. Although there is some information on these old mines we could really do with knowing more if it is still available. There were many very small independants who mined in the valley going way way back and most of which not documented. Therefore if anyone is available to help with information you may have had passed down or photos etc please get in touch.

Do you know where the name comes from? Just that in Chapeltown there is a Hunshelf Rd, and Ecclesfield School did have a Hunshelf building - plus the main building was made from stone feom the nearby Hunshelf Quarry which overlooks Windmill Lane.

Ray Battye's book, The Forgotten Mines of Sheffield mentions gannister mining on Hunshelf Bank. (Ray is a member of this forum)

I would also search the Sheffield Archives catalogue at Access to Archives (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/advanced-search.aspx?tab=1) for Hunshelf - lots of hits, some of which may have information on mining.

According to Joseph Hunter's South Yorkshire Hunshelf refers to shelving land towards the lesser Don. I have heard it said that it refers to land owned by Hun.
