me and the wife are possibly moving to sheffield and no nothing about the place. we currently live in jesmond, newcastle and are looking for a similar area (if it exists!) if sheffield. by that i basically mean walkable to nice pubs and restaurants, shops, reasonable public transport to city centre. also child friendly. any ideas - have been told s7, s10, s11 but to someone who doesnt know sheffield that seems a bit vague and rather a large area!

thanks in advance

Welcome to the forum - have a look at S8 - Woodseats etc. That's where I live - plenty of shops and good links to the city centre. There's also a very nice park (Graves Park). I used to live in Jesmond whilst I was studying in Newcastle

Come and have a look.

You can motor round the west of the city in an afternoon to get a flavour.

Depending how much cash you have Id say Broomhill would fit the bill for you.
Its very 'studenty' but get away from the main drag and its a bit quieter.

S11 also agreeable.
The bit around Hunters Bar and Nether Edge is a bit more central and lively, the bit further down Ecclesall Road a bit more family orientated. This merges with Millhouses, S7, which is a bit quieter again and more family like again.

Also S10 and S11 are seperated by a valley which is all parkland. If youre feeling energetic start with the kids at the Hunters Bar roundabout and walk out to Forge Dam where you can get a bacon butty and/or ice cream. You can then walk through the woods to National Park.
Try that in any other city in the UK :)

Cheers

d

PS I would strongly advise you rent here before you buy if thats what you want.

I'd agree with this. We rented for 18 months before buying

Went to Jesmond Dene years ago, lovely area, not much to compare with it housing style-wise but Endcliffe, Ranmoor, Nether Green towards Hunters Bar for the shopping are probably as near as you will get. Also good areas for schools and access to city. Look out for the proposed student village being built on the site of some of the Halls of residence, you need to be about 1/2 a mile to the south or west of these. Think renting a really good idea more people should do it.

I've lived in both cities (preferred Spital Tongues to Jesmond having lived / owned in both, though; I lived in Dore in Sheffield which is very suburban... indeed).

There really isn't a comparable area that combines being in the City with being in the suburbs as well as Jesmond. Broomhill is a good suggestion in that it has the University vibe. The large number of rugby jumper-wearing law and medical students in the area will make you feel right at home. Architecture / houses are comparable too. However, Sheffield lacks the buzz of Newcastle in many ways (still good, but just not as good: please, no flames) so there's less of an opportunity to walk to your local cous cous restaurant, for example, if that's what you're into. Pubs, though, are not a problem there.

Ranmoor is a wee bit (ie. half a mile) further out from town but is quite classy: think Ponteland (but much much closer to town). There'll be less vomitting students there.

With all due respect to the previous poster, I would give Woodseat a miss. Although the suggestion of Millhouses isn't a bad one at all (handy for the Abbey Friar!).

Perhaps you'd care to tell us why you'd give Woodseats a miss

Why aren't people allowed to have any negative opinions without having to justify themselves so much? It was just his opinion. In all honesty I'd agree - Woodseats is hardly in the same league as Ranmoor and some of the other areas suggested.

Can you prove it using some crime statistics from 2002, just to put my mind at ease? Or maybe provide your very own league table of the bestest bestest bestest places to live in Sheffield?

Back to the thread... as others have said, best to suck it and see in my opinion – rent for a while and see what suits. I'd guard against being sucked into overspending on a trendy area that's not all that, though. There are a few of those types of places in Sheffield.

Because it is nothing like Jesmond. Whereas Ranmoor and Broomhill are. And that was the main thrust of the original question.

Anyway, Woodseats hasn't been the same since Medio's closed down.

I think the problem is you're just not going to find anything like Jesmond in Sheffield. The suggestion that Broomhill is anything like it is quite frankly a joke. Ranmoor is 'nice' bit that's about as far as it goes.

As for t020's comment where did I ask anyone to justify themselves - I asked aussieboy to qualify his opinion to help antcb
