Yeah totally agree. I mean what's the point in testing out potential players for the World Cup. There really is no point in seeing how well the players play together. Waste of time. Just chuck them all in when the time comes and hope for the best is clearly the best way.

It could be argued that these "pointless" friendlies are actually the only chance the England manager gets to test his ideas and squad without a tremendous amount of pressure to win the game.

How can you think that preparing for a World Cup Qualifier is pointless?

Less of the abuse please.

As in the post above. These matches can help to aid the England manager to test things out, where else would he have the chance to do this? In training just before the match maybe? Or maybe instead of playing friendlies, he should just test his ideas out on Pro Evolution Soccer on the Playstation?

There is a very important World Cup qualifier next week so a friendly against any opposition just beforehand is a bloody good idea,it gets the players time to bond,it gives the manager a chance to have a look at a few alternatives should he need them and it gives the players on the fringe of the first 11 a chance to show what they can do
How the hell can that be a waste of time?

You'll not be saying that once Stevie G limps off after being kicked out the game, causing him to miss the qualifier...

Well if Gerrard limps off then it will allow one of the fringe players to show what they can do and give them experience,if a first team player does get injured then you need to know that his replacement is up to it which is the main point of friendly games

If he is in the squad (which he is) then there is a decent chance he will be used at some point v Croatia which is why the friendly is needed to see if he is good enough

could`nt agree more -i started a thread about getting rid of international breaks -this is a good example of the domestic calendar being disrupted for no reason

but why should we have to have the domestic fixtures suspended for england games ?

but why should we have to have the domestic fixtures suspended for england games ?

Because at a crucial part of the season when players are being called up for international duty (e.g., Wales and my mob over the water have Qualifying fixtures, not friendlies), our clubs shouldn't be expected to field weakened squads as a result.

As a consequence, it gives a decent opportunity for your lot to have a friendly to sort out your squad, try new players, all sorts of other reasons.

They're not suspended. They were never scheduled to start with. If they had been, the top teams would have not been able to field proper teams as the majority of their squads would have been unavailable.

Plus don't forget, if they cancelled ENGURLAND friendlies that would seriously reduce your average chav fan's opportunities to go down the blue ball for a few pints and smash a few windows on the way home.

It's the day out with England fans, not the footie. Always been the same.

Well it backfired tremendously didn't it with all those forwards injured and now he has called up darren bent. Why doesn't he call up kev davies of bolton he is the top engish scorer in the premiership

Exactly.

He calls up bloody Heskey and yet ignores Davies.

No he isnt - Gerrard and Crouch have both scored more.

Can you seriously imagine Kevin Davies actually playing for England??

Mick Quinn said on Talksport yesterday that the crop of forwards we currently have is the poorest there's been for years. And when there's talk of Kevin Davies actually figuring in an England setup you can see his point.

I think most premiership defenders would admit they hate playing against him because they get such a rough time as he puts himself about a lot. I would rather see Davies than Heskey

Which he will get away with at the Reebok against the likes of Middlesboro' - but not at international level.

I know that a lot of people in this country like an "old fashioned centre forward" - but can anybody remember the last time anyone won anything with one?

Totally Agree
Davies does a cracking job for Bolton and as an ex centre back i would have had a battle with him but Rooney can do the job of Davies and a hell of a lot more
Davies isn't suited to International footy

So what has darren bent got that davies hasnt then because I cant think of anything. I know he is a premiership footballer but if United had the chance to spend big money I for one hope we wouldnt waste it on such a useless git like bent
