can you get any kind of compensation if the road you're driving on does damage to your car?
I've just driven back from getting my MOT sorted, and driven over a speed hump (at about 15-20mph). there was a massive bang, and now my exhaust is blowing, making me think the speed hump has actually caused damage to my car.
Now, i was travelling well below the speed limit (30mph), and taking care on the humps, yet this one has just annihilated my exhaust, which after getting a clean bill of health on my MOT, i'm not best pleased about.
Is there anything i can do?

usually speed humps are in 20mph zones, not 30mph. All the ones around woodseats, and Colegiate crescent are in 20mph zones. You would be very likely to do damage to your vehicle if you were to be speeding at over 20mph in these areas.
Aha..
I have just re-read your post when you claim to be doing less than 20mph after all.
Well then is your exhaust too low?
You cannot expect to have a 2" clearence in this day and age, when we have to stop all the scum driving their little chavved up shopping trolleys from screaming up and down our quiet steets, with speedhumps because we-re not allowed to use appropriate millitary ammunition.
30mph zone, even if it was 20mph, i was travelling below this over the hump, and hadn't had a problem on any of the others on the road.

Find a solicitor who does a free first consultation. See if they think you have a case and if there have been any previous cases that have set a persistent in Sheffield.
Write to your council today and send it recorded delivery. Inform them you have received damage from a speed bump etc stating dates and times.
It might be a good idea to go back to the speed bump and photograph it, see if there are any scraps on it that then can be matched to your car. Also go back to a friendly garage and ask to have the car jacked up on a ramp and photo the damage.
Oh and Good Luck.
cheers serapis. I'm not holdign out much hope, but we'll wait and see.
Muddy, the car's a standard height 206. Not lowered or chavvish at all [how dare you!]

I've had this before. Funnily enough i'd just had my MOT done the same day.
My opinion is that you'll get nothing and that the MOT centre have weakened your exhaust through it's test (they hit it i believe!)
I may be wrong but good luck!
Hi cmaloney in some city's ie Leeds they have started removing the bumps. Probably got sick of people claiming. So its worth a try.
You could try taking a photo of the offending hump - if it's full of scars from previous incidents, or at least yours
If you ask me speed bumps should be banned. Some of them are so high it shakes you going over them at 5mph. Fell sorry for drivers/passengers with bad backs etc
