I think the Duke is mentioned already in one of the threads.

If I remember correctly he was a man who used to dress in ragged evening wear, Coat tails, top hat and when I saw him shirt cuffs- no shirt.
I reguarly saw him directing the traffic in the middle of the Rd at Darnall, he was well known for it. Think he directed it in town too. He was around Darnall iin about 1954 when I worked there.

Hi Vera
Nice to hear from you.

From 1952- 60 I worked at Darnall Day Nursery, across from the entrance at the bottm of High Hazels Park, Waverly Rd.
My first job, I loved it so much I used to resent the weekends when I didn't work.

I must have passed you or caught the same tram as you, the queues at that time were tremendous. I used to catch the tram to Manor Top or occasioally catch the tram straight through to Intake where I lived. Did you work at Darnall.?

I've just realise this is the Thead for The Duke of Darnall so I either wipe it out or risk the Mods.!!

The Meadow Pub on Darnall Road is now a Christian Fellowship Church called 'Living Waters'. The old Industry Pub next door has a sign saying 'Rooms to Let'. Cyril's Cafe is now a Barber's Shop.

The Chapel on Mandeville Street has been demolished and in its place is the most amazing large villa with balconies and electronic gates which would not look out of place in the South of France. It is well worth a visit to Darnall to view this palatial mansion.

Morrison's Store has been demolished and a new Lidl Store is rising in its place, which I feel sure will be a boon to the long suffering residents of Darnall, the salt of the earth.

The old Chapel inside the gates of Darnall Cemetery no longer exists, in its place is a flower bed.

Lastly with great sadness I must report that Cravens Carriage Works on Staniforth Road is now reduced to rubble, only the stone pillars which were each side of the main gates opposite Frederick Street are still standing. I understand a new housing estate is to be built on this now empty space containing houses to rent and buy. Many of my now deceased uncles and cousins served their apprenticeships there and retired from there.

Cravens' legacy lives on. Last time I rode on the Met Line tube in London it still said "Cravens - Sheffield 1962" on the threshold plates at every carriage door. The carriages are nearly as old as I am. I went to Whitby Road School opposite Cravens in the 60's - after the carriages were built!
