Hi,

I have a box of old glass negatives. The one's I have managed to identify have all been around the High Green area.

They were taken around 1901-05.

Is there anybody on this forum who knows High Green well and could possibly recognise these two old photographs?

Many Thanks.

I'm sorry, but you will have to put an 'www', before the web address, because this site won't let me post any links until I've made 5 posts.

Not sure but the first one reminds me of Whitley Hall Hotel. Hubby suggests Staindrop Lodge if High Green.

Many thanks for the replies and sorting out the links! You got me going again, trying to work out where these are.

I've tried surfing the web on the info above but as of yet, haven't really found anything.

It's a shame that the new google street view doesn't cover this part of Sheffield.

Could the first one be the old Housley Hall in Chapeltown?

I checked out Housley Hall because of what you said Nigel. Alas I can't make any connection at the moment.

Well with the success of finding Mortomley Hall and the Queens Head photo, I'll try this one. This could be part of the other large looking house above.

If any kind soul can shed any light on this one, that again will be fantastic.

Think this might be Barnes Hall up Bracken Hill, but I don't know if it is still there.
The other one is not Housley Hall, I know the owner and I was round there the other day, so it's not even the back view.

Many thanks for your help. I've just had a really good look at Barnes Hall. It's very hard to say. Looking at photographs from a very long time ago.

I would say it's close, in many ways of architecture is the same.

It also looks very much like Stocksbridge Hall.

If I didn't live so far away I would get my car out..

I have to say I thought the first one was Housley Hall.

I should be able to get a modern pic in a few days, so would be good to compare.

these photos are really good quality and so interesting 4a is The Cart and Horses with the Catholic Church in the background 5a Could be The Market Inn on Wortley Road
I wonder if the church in the background of 5c is high green methodist church if so that would mean the house is further down Mortomley Lane definately gone now, and 5e is Jeffcock road looking towards the Cart and Horses. Please publish any more you have as I find it fascinating

I Think House1 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/24986943@N07/3351030570/in/photostream/) might be the old school house on the Wheel at Ecclesfield?

Perhaps the Chapeltown and High Green Archive (http://www.tilthammer.com/fl/chga.html)people might be interested in copies of your photos or be able to identify the images?

The large house you mentioned, I have found out it Mortomley Hall. In it's last days is was the public library for High Green and then it was demolished in 1961.

I've tried two emails to the archive people, but they always bounce back. I got in touch with the local library and they said they were winding things down. So not sure what to make of that. Either way, I'll try and give them a call.

I think this photograph should possibly be of High Green as a continuation of the celebrations on the other I posted the other day.

I can't make out any street names or anything.

Does anybody recognise this one?

Thanks.

Easy this one, it's a photo of the shops at the bottom of Jeffcock Rd.They still look very similar, one of them is a betting shop and one a hairdressers/barbers

I was up High Green this morning, and I took these pictures (http://s197.photobucket.com/albums/aa182/satman2222/High%20Green/)on my phone from approximately the same viewpoints. :)

Please contact the Local Studies Library at Sheffield, I am sure they would be very interested in your negatives

I do not want to put a damper on you passing your negatives over to the Local History Library but be warned.

If you do and you want them returned ensure you get a receipt for them with the librarians name on them.

One of the forummers passed over a set of glass negatives and now they say they cannot find them, he didn't get a receipt unfortunately.

So please take heed, it's a busy place with lots and lots of stuff to handle and it is so easy for stuff to get lost.

Thanks for taking those photographs. It's great to see things in this day and age.

Brilliant how things have really changed, but still recognisable.

It doesn't look like Barnes Hall.... I used to live there, and yes it's still there. You can see it if you walk across the field from Elliott Lane towards Chapel Road :)
