I've been lead to believe that installing your a new slave drive into a PC is a relativly simple procedure but so far no luck.
Can any give decent step-by-step instructions, preferably with pics, on how to install a new slave drive.
Big thanks
P
Have you installed anything in your pc before?

I've done a fair bit of work on PC's before and used to live with a computer tech fella so like to think of my self as reasonably fluent in maintaining my PC, this biggest prob I'm having is plugging the thing in. The power lead fits no probs but what about the other two slotS? The smaller slot (6/8 pins) just wont plug into the plug that should go in to it.
What am I doning wrong.

P isn't the 7 pin SATA ? whilst the 100000 pin IDE ? ?
yes, sounds like it could be a s-ata drive, or maybe your trying to plug something into where the jumpers go...
which of these does it look most like?
Serial ATA (http://www.vini.co.uk/sata-drive-connectors.jpg)
IDE/ATA (http://www.vini.co.uk/ide-drive-connectors.jpg)

Thanks everyone but I've now managed to connect the slve drive to the computer and all is now good.
Thanks everyone for you help.
I'm sure it wont be long before I have another query.
Big Thanks
P
I've got a new computer and need to transfer all the info from the old one. Is it best to add the old hard drive as a slave, in which case, which jumpers do I change or should I copy old files onto something and then transfer to new computer. I don't want the new computer to actually use these old files unless I specifically ask for them but I want them to be available.
I'll be grateful for a bit of help but no gobbledegook and acronyms or things like 7 pin SATA or 100000 pin IDE without a description if you can help it please. Ta.

Yes. Just put your old drive into the new machine as a slave and it will show up in the directory as a new drive with a letter like "F" or something.
You can just open files from there as you need them.
You just need to change the master/slave jumpers before installing.
Here's some pictures:

See the 8 pins?
They are actually 4 pairs and jumpers connect a top and bottom pair together.
Which ones should be connected depend on whether you want "Master", "Slave" or "Auto".
Usually, there is a small guide above the pins to show which ones are which.
If not go to the manufacturers website and you will find the settings there.
There is a picture HERE (http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/images/u5_family_1.gif) to give a better idea. (these may not be the actual settings for your drive, though!)
There should be a spare, slave connector half-way down the ribbon that comes from your new hard drive.
That is what you are looking to connect your old drive to.
There should also be a spare power connector hanging around in there as well.
