There's a very good free website for fans called Simviation
which right now is featuring improvements on the Sheffield City airport scenery file. Thought you might like to know.

More of a Flight Unlimited II fan - I've a creaky computer and it can't handle modern flight sims. I'm rather envious of you being able to fly over Sheff, though. What is the level of detail like?

if i had the wings of a sparrow,
the dirty great a*** of a crow,
I'd fly over Hillsborough tomorrow,
And picture the people below....

Is www.flightsim.com still free? I paid the small fee to become a member so you dont always get "site busy" but i think thats free. There must be millions of add-ons there!

Also if your after a place to buy stuff then www.simmarket.com is a good place

I've just put it on, it's great! The detail is pretty good with all the businesses and their advertising signs along the side of the runway (even lots of white vans in the van hire place!).

My only gripe is that the hill on the opposite side is still missing.

Added a couple of low-res photos:

Thought I might get lucky and find some city landmarks as well, but not at all like the city as I remember it. I have a massive "hangar" of aircraft taken free out of Simviation. They have just started charging $20 a year, and say you can still load freeware. However since I spent the twenty, my downloads have suddenly improved a lot, Miraculous ain't it.
Currently enjoying a Blackburn Overstrand of the 1930s on a flight to Australia from Manston, landing in the desert or some remote airfield to fill up, just like they would in the 30s. Going to be over 30 hours of flying. They did it without GPS, I'm not!

I rebuilt the twin towers, Terrorist, so your efforts were all in vain.
To be serious though, I have been a FS addict since FS1 back in the early eighties, running it on a Tandy 1000 in the good old 8086 days on floppies and no HDs. I have had every version right up to 2004, and still sometimes run 2002 from my backup HD because it is more frame friendly if I don't need GPS.
There are thousands of well made airports with authentic sceneries. What is remarkable is it comes at a very reasonable price. I don't know what you pay in UK but over here a new copy costs around $50.
Flying magazine contributing pilots say they often plan their trips after running an FS flght plan on the computer in order to research routes and terrain.
I am also a general aviation VFR rated pilot who shares ownership of a Cessna 182 with three other pilots, and can confirm what these pilots are saying. I find using this method saves me having to dig out and read Jepperson charts when flying in our crowded air space.

I recommend the DVD 'Sheffield and District From the Air'. Although it is quite amatuerish, it is very interesting. http://www.videopasts.co.uk/acatalog/sheffield_air.jpg
Get it from here. (http://www.videopasts.co.uk/acatalog/Cities_from_Air.html)

I also recommend this VFR Photographic Scenery: Northern England (http://www.justflight.com/en/(fbwbpjr4t0tgs545rgmxup3y)/pages/area2/products.aspx?pid=JFF000021&cat=a&show=longDesc)

Here's a few views of Sheffield.

Rother Valley, Sothal & Holbrook (http://www.btinternet.com/~howard.longden/hal/ms1.jpg)

Gleadless Town End & Gleadless Valley (http://www.btinternet.com/~howard.longden/hal/ms2.jpg)

Bramhall Lane (http://www.btinternet.com/~howard.longden/hal/ms3.jpg)

Owlerton and Hillsborough Stadiums. (http://www.btinternet.com/~howard.longden/hal/ms4.jpg)

These were all taken in Flight Sim 2002, it works with 2004 too. However I like to fly in the original scenery in 2004 and keep 2002 just for this software.
