Downloaded Linux Suse 11.1 DVD image yesterday, thought id give linux another bash, bored of windows, so.... i burned the iso this morning, put the dvd in my machine which is running Windows XP, and the install wizard pops up.. go through the install instructions then it says it needs to reboot, so i do and then it continues to try and install, untill i get the message:

file:/var/adm/mount/boot/i386/branding: SHA1 sum wrong.

if you really trust your repositry, you may continue in an insecure mode

 if i try to continue, it just gives me an error and doesnt carry on with the installation....any ideas? i know nothing about linux so any adivice in lamens terms please :D

You could order 1 online from Ubuntu free of charge plus free postage. If you go to the linux page you may be able to get a suse disc.

Did you check the integrity of the download and of disc the burn.

Last week I spent about 6 hours getting loads of different errors when installing, at 1am I changed the HDD and DVD drive and hey presto, went straight on without issue.

Someone seems to have had the same error output here (http://news.opensuse.org/2008/12/18/opensuse-111-released/) (search for sha1 on the page), but as someone suggests, I never have many of the issues when using Fedora (if anything their getting too polished and have too much time on their hands to implement annoying noob features (which is why I moved away from win)).

Most other results with that error were in German, Russian or Japanese. Otherwise best place for help is http://www.linuxquestions.org/

Have you checked in the BIOS that the boot sequence checks the disk drive before the hard drive. Also some BIOS have an install protection thing that you can turn on or off...

Try looking for a live cd version. That way you can boot from the CD and see if the linux distrub works with your hardware; if does you can then install it.

are you burning it as an image - by that i mean not buy extracting the iso then burning the contents as a data disk

I also prefer ubuntu over suse... better OS GUI in my mind, plus its much more documented on the web...

but thats another post ;)

I started linux with this (http://www.knoppix-std.org/), it fits on a cd and generally works with fine with laptops.

Sorry to sound pedantic...

Did you check the file hash either md5 or sha1 against the iso you downloaded, before burning?

The hash can be downloaded from the same place you downloaded the iso image.

It's a bit like a signature for digital data, used for verification...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryptographic_hash_function
(or in reality it's probably more like a tally of contents)
