View Full Version : Rabbits..Normal or not?
Moonbird 20-03-2009, 18:37 Is it usual for a neutered buck to still mate with a unspayed female? I have been allowing mine to play in the enclosure together, they seem to get on well....today they moved their relationship up a notch and I expect them to soon announce their engagement :suspect:
I hope that I will not be surprised in the near future by the patter of tiny paws, please someone reassure me :hihi:
mummysaz21 20-03-2009, 19:03 yes we all have needs lol
its not always for sexual relief , mounting is done for dominance as well my two males used to mount each other as did two of my females (this incidently made my female go into a phantom pregnancy she was never too bright lol)
however if hes been done you wont get babies lol so whatever takes their fancy :D
mummysaz21 20-03-2009, 20:14 lol i know ami j i had them for years was just being funny hehe, watttttttttttt we do lol
as did i lol...you will notice in my message i too had a joke but i was also providing the o.p with an answer ;)
skinnydog 20-03-2009, 20:21 Dogs and cats still do it.
Moonbird 20-03-2009, 20:22 Oh good, I was starting to wonder if all was not as it seemed with him, I also wondered if it might make her have a false pregnancy aww I hope not poor Bunny.
I will get her spayed as soon as I can afford it, I thought if they get along ok it would brighten both their days if they are allowed to run about together, then after spaying they can go into the same hutch as well.
aye i wouldnt worry about it too much as its only a short term thing , like i said sparky was a bit dumb hehe
helenasq 20-03-2009, 22:22 My nuetered rabbit I adopted seems to have fathered 7 babies. I discovered them yesterday and was shocked. I will be ringing the vets when I get a minute to ask what went wrong!!!!

Noooo please tell me your lying :o
Was he not neutered while you had him then?
Moonbird 20-03-2009, 22:39 I don't want baby rabbits  I will sue the vets so I shall!
helenasq 20-03-2009, 22:42 I'm not lying moonbird. The first time I saw him he was coming round from his neutering at the vets. He was an rspca rabbit and I adopted him a few days later.he's been bonded with a female who had given birth to the babies yesterday. She will not tolerate other rabbits and I'd seen rex performing with her but wasn't worried as thought he could do no harm. How wrong I was!!!!

Noooooooooooooooooo, how long ago was he neutered Helen?
Ps I know your not lying really :hihi: OMG what a shock that is my worst nightmare.
helenasq 20-03-2009, 22:47 He was done early January. I knew he wasn't safe with a female for the first month but by now he should have been ok. Been out with Teeny tonight and she agrees that he should have been fine now. Will be ringing vets in the morning.I suppose as with humans the op is never 100% guaranteed.
Highfields give out a sheet with times after being neutered before you can safely mix with an unspayed female- with rabbits, guinea pigs and ferrets I think it's a period of weeks.
This is one reason why I never have entire toms as a foster when I've got entire queens- there's always an outside chance after neutering that he can still father a litter after the snip.
Moonbird 20-03-2009, 22:53 My rabbit was neutered oooh must be 2 years ago, there should be no doubt, oh dear!
It's weird cause he has never done that with Lily who I had spayed, but obviously this one is not.
helenasq 20-03-2009, 22:56 I think you should be ok with him if he's been done that long.I suppose this rabbit smells different to lily if she's not been done so tha's probably what's attracting him to her.

Yes thats what I thought, I wasn't expecting him to do that though
Well time will tell I suppose now.

Oh thank goodness so all may be well then, perhaps it is normal behaviour
*Peaches* 21-03-2009, 10:28 I always say 6 weeks for any neutered animal to be safe, thats how long it takes the sperm in the tubes to die off
yes but these have all be neuted and spayed over 2 years ago ! so there will be no babies yeahhhhhhhhhhhhh

helenasq 21-03-2009, 17:10 Oh well peaches he might have just got a squirt in before the 6 weeks was up. If that's the case hopefully there won't be any more. If there are I will be straight off to the vets to complain!!! Btw your girl piggies are doing really well.
