View Full Version : Where is the best place to live in Sheffield?
kev21662 28-06-2005, 18:36 I'm looking to move back to Sheffield after 23 years away. Which is the best place to buy a house from a "quality of life" perspective. Facilities aren't my main concern; just a quiet, crime-free(ish) place with good neighbours! Kevin.

Zenmaster 28-06-2005, 18:53 I've lived in sheffied for eight years... I recommend:
Pretty much anywhere in the south-west,
Fulwood S10
Ranmoor S10
Crookes S10
Nether Green S10
Crosspool S10
Sandygate S10
Nether Edge S7
Bannercross S11
Ecclesall Rd S11
or cheaper areas to the north like:
Hillsborough S6
Walkley S6

Hmmm, tricky...
...everybody likes where they live, for the most part that's why they live there...
...you'll have to give us a few more details if you expect a truly considered answer...
...budget, type of accommodation required, and of course, what do you mean by "good neighbours"? Chatty (nosy?) or quiet (distant/aloof?).
I'm sure people will try to help if they have some ideas what you are looking for.
:)

This is a very subjective question, as different people will have different opinions of their (and other) areas; however, S10, S7 and S11 are reasonable.
If two-up-two-downs are not your thing then Hillsborough and surrounding areas may not be a good choice.
I do like Ranmoor, if you can run to it money-wise.
:)
In alphabetical order: Beauchief, Brincliffe, Crosspool, Dore, Ecclesall, Fulwood, Greystones, High Storrs, Lodge Moor, Millhouses, Nether Green, Ranmoor, Totley, Whirlow...
Basically, like Zenmaster said earlier, suburbs in the south-west of Sheffield (although I'd disagree with him on Crookes and Ecclesall Rd as they are student areas so not very quiet).
Edit: added Lodge Moor, thanks Goldenfleece.

And now put them in order of personal preference.. Does the first one begin with 'E' ?
Sorry t020 - couldn't resist. :)

No, I prefer the W.
goldenfleece 28-06-2005, 19:37 Lodge Moor is excellant as well......generally very quiet
Greybeard 28-06-2005, 21:41 You could do worse than rural Bradfield. It's largely ignored, - even avoided, by the upwardly mobile hooray henry set because it has an S6 postcode...and I'm truly grateful for that. ;)
Neighbours aren't a problem...all mine are at least a quarter of a mile away; apart from the odd shooting, crime isn't really a problem either. As for noise it's generally very quiet - although at this time of year you can expect to be woken before five by a Curlew warbling away on the garden wall and randy Owls hooting away until well after midnight, not forgetting the cocky cock Pheasant insisting your garden is his territory all the year round. :D
I think Hillsborough/lower walkely is a good place to live.
It's quick and easy to get into town on the tram, has all the amenities you would need very close by and is generally a friendly/quiet place to live (unless you hang out at hillsborough corner which is a bit noisy on nights out). But then i live on a nice quiet street that makes a big difference.
kev21662 29-06-2005, 18:32 Thanks for your replies! Always had the impression that SW of Sheffield was the "better" area. And I'll certainly buy a cottage in Bradfield when I win the lottery! Many thanks, Kevin.
Cranworth 06-07-2005, 19:08 woodseats definately the best!
