View Full Version : Twitter - good or bad?
I just don't get twitter. Does anyone here tweet, and does anyone listen to your tweets? Do you listen to anyone elses? Rumours abound that its the future of networking - would really value any opinions, good or bad or don't care.
ImpInaBox 19-03-2009, 22:52 ...and does anyone listen to your tweets? Do you listen to anyone elses?.
Listen? You're supposed to read this stuff? I thought it was some kind of write-only-memory - to get stuff off your chest as it were.
SHANE-D-PAIN 20-03-2009, 02:31 Twitter = Awesome! :D

mr chris 20-03-2009, 07:02 Twitter is pretty interesting, but I can't see it being the future of business networking, unless you run something that's 140 characters or less....
abbasinho 20-03-2009, 07:51 I quite enjoy Twitter actually. I find it more interesting and engaging than Facebook. I like the link sharing that goes on. Being a designer I've started following the likes of Creative Review and it's opened up a few more inspiration angles for me to explore. It also gives me an insight into what other designers are upto.
I've found myself checking it a lot recently. However, i've not received any extra business through it, just more exposure, but more exposure to other people in my field of work which isn't really what i'm after. But i've accepted this now and i've just started going with the flow.
They go on about Twitter every day on the radio, but I have never got into it, don't know what all the fuss is about.
I also thought Twitter was a lot like Facebook, but it actually turns out that it is a way of keeping your friends and family up to date with what you are doing, but I'm not sure if I want people to know where I am and what I'm doing every single minute of the day, seems pointless to me.
ImpInaBox 20-03-2009, 09:18 Having set up a twitter account a month or two back I've only gone back to it once. Doubtless there are people worth following but there's so much crap on there and so few tools find anything that just might be of interest that it doesn't seem worth the effort. Unless I find a convincing reason to take it any further I'll not be back a second time.
Have I missed something?
PS. I've just blown my nose. Anybody interested??? :suspect:
indizine 20-03-2009, 09:27 What sort of hanky did you use? Was if environmentally friendly? Perhaps you can retweet that? :D
Mike (Imp) are you a one hit and bin it guy or do you recycle your tissues?
Trying to be serious for a second:
I struggle to see twitter as a marketing tool for anything other than the worlds big brands. If I thought there was something MoreComputers did everyday that followers would find interesting then I'd be sure to do it.
My Tweets would look something like this:
- A customer from Oxford has just bought a Sanyo Lamp for Sanyo PLC-XE31 Projector - 610-328-6549 for £219
- We've just arranged to collect a customers faulty laptop from Coventry
Not as exciting as Stephen Fry is it!
Anybody any ideas what I could tweet?
I do a weekly email with our best selling / most looked at / just reviewed products - I could do that on twitter - do you think it would be of interest?
sharpend 20-03-2009, 09:51 You can set it up so that all your blog posts are twittered.
I have around 900 followers and get a steady stream of (semi targetted) traffic everytime I post a blog.
Barack is a pretty smart guy and he used it as part of his election campaign. If its good enough for him...
sharpend 20-03-2009, 09:51 edit - but you need to mix in the "I just blew my nose" stuff or you will become a spammer...
ps I am www.twitter.com/sharpendtrain
We have an account (http://twitter.com/plusnet) - we use it to announce service status messages and the like. It's also useful to find out if people are talking about your company, and if so what they're saying.
I have just made an account for the company... made a personal one ages ago and was thoroughly unimpressed but I have little to do at present (well actually I have loads to do but don't want to do it) so figured I would have a go!

Now that sounds like a useful kinda tweet but, other than wondering if there might be a PlusNet tweet, or a DPReview tweet or whatever, how do I find tweets on specific topics? That seems to the the bit that's missing (or that I've missed) for serious use.
PS. With a nose as big as mine it's one shot and dump. And my bin is filling up fast - when I find out who gave me this wretched cold I'm gonna sneeze on them!
So its like this (http://www.impinabox.co.uk/photos/oddpics/breakfast_on_facebook.jpg) really...
I had a play with it for a while and have gained a few friends from around the world, i've even set up some translation programs and dip into Japanese and Chinese conversations (but they tend to use it differently than us).
But yes, I had better things to do with my time, so I wrote a little app which randomly chooses positive statements from a DB and tweets them every now and again.
Go on!
All said and done though, I have picked up some good little tips and some gossip tit-bits, but I also don't tend to follow links (mainly adverts), so my advice is to keep it short and sweet.

It depends who you're following and who's following you.
Never underestimate the power of the re-tweet.
You could be running an offer, which you could post on Twitter, somebody could see it, be interested in it, and re-tweet it. This could lead to a sale. Who knows??
I agree, it's not an all conquering marketing behemoth but dedicating 10-15 minutes per day to it could lead to some sales or contacts.
You could be running an offer, which you could post on Twitter
Do you think people would sign up to the MoreComputers.com offers tweet? I'm not convinced how many people would.
At least when I email people who have bought from us they have had a shopping experience with us and have had a reason to say 'yes send me your email offers'.
Do any of you who use twitter use it to receive offers?
I like the sound of people re-tweeting and I can see how an offer would go viral. Kind of like the HotUKDeals site - we do well from that site.

http://search.twitter.com/
Basically you can add your own keywords by putting a hash in front of it (you've probably seen people doing it) - these words are indexed by the search engine, so if you've got something to say that you want to come up when people search (i.e. #google have a picture of the very hungry caterpillar on their logo today!) will come up when someone searches on the above site for google.
I like twitter, they've managed to stop it being too annoying very well I think.

I do not see why anyone would go on their computer and see what someone had done during the day.
Give the person a call later, go to the pub and have a chat... Have a life.Do any of you who use twitter use it to receive offers? No, why would I ask for spam or junk mail?

I also cannot see the point it's OK for the type of people who like Big Brother or watching paint dry.
Having said that there seem to be a lot of "twits" out there.
I'd describe it as a cross between a chat room and forum, but more light hearted than a forum. One reason why it's successful is because there's always a single question being asked, and if you've noticed there are a lot of people who probably aren't as social as they'd like to be. It does definitely attract certain specific personality types.
But on the other hand, I know a lot of people who laugh at people who frequent forums, but who's who to dictate what life should be? (Listen to the voice of the Mysterons!)
ChrisTodd 22-03-2009, 10:28 I've recently registered a Twitter account.
I use it mainly to publish my blog posts.
So far I have made a couple of contacts, but nothing concrete.
I look on it as a long, rather than short term, venture.
It took my website nearly two years to start getting significant hits and producing business from it.
sharpend 22-03-2009, 11:09 How do you set that up? Are you using the widgets / badges?
no there is a site called twitterfeed - downside is they take your twitter password but it looks pretty legit - just make it unqiue(dont use it on anything else)
HarryFlint 22-03-2009, 12:49 Twitter great for business.
If you work in any kind of design or IT business, you will find contacts and information that you wouldn't normally get. I use it mainly as a research tool, and am constantly monitoring tweets from people I follow - I have usedit for networking and even CEO of multinationals use it.
But you only get out what you put in.
sharpend 24-03-2009, 16:17 Flip Chart Fairy Tales is a blog I follow regularly and Rick posted this

Oh I Twitter.....you can follow me if you like but the people I follow are way more interesting !!
:D
Nice story Sharpend - like the one about the guy who Twittered how he hated a certain city and all the people in it as he arrived at the airport. The clients he was visiting read his slagging off and were none too pleased.
Back to twitter as a way of promoting your business - I can see how it would work for a service based business - were you have to demonstrate you know what you are talking about. But I'm still struggling to apply it to our retail business in an engaging way.
