View Full Version : Camera without CD software
alankearn 28-06-2005, 14:10 I have the chance to buy a 8 month old Sony dcs p7 4 mp digital camera for £60 but there are no usb and av cables or CD software with it . I can buy the cables online and I can the driver from the Sony web site. If I can not get the CD software for this camera will I be able to download the pictures from the camera to my computer.
Thanks
Forgot to say the OS is Windows 98se
you could buy a usb card reader for <£10 which will read the sony memory sticks and wont require any cables :)
alankearn 28-06-2005, 14:19 That reply was quick Thanks

You'll need a Memory Stick reader, but depending on the connection you can probably buy a new cable for peanuts.

No, you just take the card out and whack it in the reader.

Have you tried DriversGuide (http://www.driversguide.com/)?
If not, then I suggest you do (go to the above website, click member login) 'cause they've archives of thousands of drivers for almost every device manufactured for the PC.
User: drivers
pw: all
Or you can create you own account;).

Just make sure that the card reader is a good one. I've seen a lot of cheap ones lately (usually those that offer to read about 50 different formats!) that promise USB drivers for Win98 available on the internet. But, you find that you either can't work out who the manufacturer is, or the website is all in Japanese.
I'm not a big fan of Sony gear, they tend to buy in other people's hardware and rebadge it. They are also notorious for using odd shaped connectors on cables (particularly on digital camcorders) so you can only buy a genuine Sony replacement.
Check that the camera uses normal AA batteries and not some custom Sony job.
theflyingfish 28-06-2005, 18:57 I didn't think windows 98 recognises external drives (such as a CF card) without a driver? Unlike XP which does. Try looking on ebay if you want the full software.

All the Sony stuff i've seen has a funky usb cable at one end, but i got a replacement cable for the handycam at work for a fiver.

Forgot to say the OS is Windows 98se Win98 is fine for multimedia drives, BUT 98 does not have built in drivers ! uh oh !
Only Windows Me onwards have built in drivers (so no need for manufacturers CD there on).
If your camera's firmware (built in software that makes the camera work) is UMS (multimedia drives) then you'll simply need the Windows CD.
If not, you can probably get the drivers of Tinternet.
This (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=8510667668&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=75502) will do the job.

Shock horror :o , you mean someone actually has to put a CD in the computer to install a driver. I mean how would you cope ;)
