View Full Version : Can't setup Link Station
Help!!! (again)
Just got a new buffalao linkstation.
Have set it up ok, to work while connected (wire) to my linksys router.
Can't get it to work when I unplug it.
Any idea why?
Thx
Is the wireless enabled on it, and have you told it what wireless network it should be connecting to?

Nope, I haven't told it what wireless network.
Doens't seem to be anywhere to do that. I've got the setup page in my webbrowser up (http://192.168.1.200/), but nowhere does it mention wireless networks!
Not that I can see anyway.
:(
Is it actually a wireless model? I'm sure there must be somewhere to specify what network its connecting to.

That's what I'm starting to think Joel.
However, it does say "For wired and wireless networks." on the box.
I bought it from ebuyer:
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=60265
On the manufacturers site:
http://www.buffalotech.co.uk/products/product-detail.php?productid=36&categoryid=16
It states:
The LinkStation Network Storage Center from Buffalo Technology offers an easy and economic solution to add 120 GigaBytes of network-attached storage via wired or wireless connections. Quick and simple installation allows you to instantly store and share your music, videos, images and other files via a web browser.
Now call me thick! ... but I would have thought wireless means you don't need to connect it to the router ... not that you need to connect it to your wireless router to be able to use it wirelessly!
tthe clue is in the title (RJ45) its not a wireless one mate.
and by the way it says "will work with wired or wireless" im guessing that just means you can plug it into a wireless router with ethernet ports, or the like.
also, on the Buffalo site the description gives the spec:
LAN Interface
Interface IEEE802.3 / IEEE802.U Standard
(100BASE-TX / 10BASE-T)
Transmission Speed 10/100 Mbps
Transmission Encoding Method 100BASE-TX: 4B5B, MLT-3
10BASE-T: Manchester coding
Access Method CSMA/CD
Port / Connector RJ-45
Cable 100BASE-TX: Category5 2,4 UTP
10BASE-T: Category3,4,5 2 UTP
Number of Ports 1
Transmission Distance 100m
Yeh, its not exactly clear on the ebuyer site. I wouldent worry too much, as you can just leave it next to your router, on 100Mbit connection, and it should be pretty happy.

It may be happy, but I won't!
I bought it so I could put it in another room (nowhere near my router) and use it as storage / wireless print server.
It won't do that!
GRRR! ... I feel mislead ...
Gonna send it back.
If your not happy, then do it, its a bit crap descrition on the ebuyer site.
I did see some other wireless based ones bit i cant remember for the life of me where.
Joel
That is pretty misleading. It can be used on a wireless network but only if you plug it into a wireless router. Bit daft! Assuming you live in Sheffield get the returns number of ebuyer and then you can drop it off yourself at the depot. They let me anyway.

Yeah, glad its not just me who felt it was misleading. I've informed Buffalao that there advertising / promotional material is misleading, and posted it back to ebuyer.
Cost me 7.20 to post!
Anyway, can live with out it.
