View Full Version : Do you turn everything off at night?
Do you turn everything off at night, including unplugging it from the socket?
Do you leave things on Standby?
What do you leave on?
Are you worried about the fire hazzard it may cause?
For example, do you leave your mobile on charge overnight?
I never turn anything off at night
I leave the landing light on all night
I leave the phone plugged into the charger all night
I sometimes leave the TV on standby, but try to remember to turn it off at the button
I never unplug anything
You can worry too much in my view
Mind you, having said that, two things I make sure of
1. smoke alarm batteries always charged
2. carbon monoxide tester always plugged in
Agent Orange 21-11-2003, 11:58 I turn everything off except the girlfriend. ;)
Classic Rock 21-11-2003, 11:59 I leave everything on, including the telly, lights, mobile phone, breadmaker, even the electric blanket if it's cold at night.

I can never find the switch to turn it ON never mind off!
I turn everything off but don't unplug things.
I don't leave the TV on standby because I thought it used as much electricity on standby as if it were on. That just seems a waste to me.
I heard about someone's mobile phone that was on charge overnight and melted. I still charge mine overnight though. I don't really know how much of a realistic fire risk a mobile phone charging up is? Maybe someone can enlighten me? It's unfortunate that I find charging my phone up overnight is the most convenient time to do it.
Following on from Belle's point: I do check my smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector as often as I can remember though...

Your obviously pressing the wrong button:thumbsup:
I unplug the kettle and toaster, turn the TV off standby (it uses more power than when actually on!) and turn the lights off. That's about it. Not really sure why I unplug the toaster and kettle, think it's become a habit now...
Turn the telly off but leave the video on. Sometimes leave my towel heater on if I've had a shower. Turn the PC off (the monitor goes onto standby, don't normally switch it off completely). The stereo stays on standby. My mobile phone is plugged in most of the time. Don't unplug anything, what's the point?

With you on that Sidla. If I go into the kitchen at night it's lit up like the flight deck of the Enterprise with the amount of indicator lights on. In fact, I can pretty much navigate through the whole house by the lights coming from electrical appliances.
For anyone that is interested
TVs don’t use more power when they are on standby but they do still use some power
On average TVs use 75 watts of active power and only 4.5 watts of standby power
A survey from the year 2000 measured 32 houses in the UK and found that on average they used 277 units (kW/H) per year just for appliances on standby
So 277 units wasted would cost you £13.85 per year
*Calculated at 5 pence per unit*

I don't agree. Say you left your TV on standby 24/7. If it's consuming 4.5 watts then this is 0.0045kW. This means it would it would take roughly 222 hours to consume 1kW. There are 8760 hours in a year, so during 1 year roughly 40kW would be consumed by your TV. If we're using 5p per unit then this would mean it would cost £2 per year to run a TV on standby. (Just over half a penny per day)
upholder 21-11-2003, 18:42 Visited a house last year where the front room had been damaged by fire, the furniture was smoke damaged.
Apparantly the cause of the fire was leaving the TV on standby all night causing it to arc or summat, maybe an electrical expert can explain.
We never leave ours on standby :o

Regardless of what it costs, multiply it by x million households and you have a hell of a waste of electricity.

Read it again Sidla. ROBERT said "appliances on standby" - not just televisions.

Of course I turn off everything at night, and sometimes I switch off the sockets too (e.g. with my PC). A TV on standby uses nearly as much power as when left on, and there's no point in wasting the money and the earth's resources when a quick press of the 'off' button does the trick.

All the same, that's still how much it costs to leave your TV on standby.

Absolute rubbish, did you not see my previous post?
Whether they do or don't use more power, South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service was recommending people to never leave TV's on standy as they are a fire risk. So either way - turn them off ;)
Yes, Sometimes leave the tv on standby but other than that everything is off.
*Twinkle* 23-11-2003, 20:47 Turn them all off! Unplug the lot! Grr there may come a day when you wish you had.
billyblade 23-11-2003, 21:05 There is a small plug in device available which measures the power consumtion of appliances, if I can remember where I got I will post it. Was horrified what some things use even when idle i.e. computer 30 watts!
