They have to be tacking the mick - or affiliated with a rival bar. B&B is one of the best bars in town

Been in twice, think it's a great place. Really spacious with lots of private places to sit, great choice of drinks on tap.

The afternoon had music but was nice and quiet, was a great place to meet for a board game.

A friday evening the music was a little too loud for what I wanted but it was a good selection of tunes, I did laugh later though when a friend of my ex who is 30 was turned away for not having ID :D

I really like Bungalows, the food is absolutely amazing as far as pub grub goes but I think in the midst of a recession they need to knock a quid or so off prices and 50 pence or so off on drinks.

The food used to be great then it went really bad! Has it got better again? I started going to the Old House or the Dog and Carrot when I wnted a couple of beers and some pub scram on a weekend.

Thats the dump you've got to get on the guest list for by going in, in the afternoon.

They make out its some exclusive club but it always looks full of the in crowd pretentious t0ssers to me!!!

Give me the new Frog and Parrot over B&B anyday.

no chance, like one of the threads says there is graffiti all over the bog walls, it wasn't a "Classy" bar but was one to go to on a night out. now its just a dive.

Ouch, sounds a little bitter. Did you actually go inside in an afternoon? I get anxious walking into somewhere new but it's incredibly relaxing.

It was much better when it was "The Firestation" - when the bar staff were no where near as incompetent as they are now.

One of the better bars in town, has it's faults but still a good bar, in fact that area of F&P, Old House and Bungalows is probably my favourite (oh and The Hallamshire on west street and The Bowery a bit further up)

Bungalows and Bears is going to be featured in one of The Guardian's Hidden Britain features soon.

With any bar (just like with any book, or with any football team) you can't please all the people all the time. Some people will love it, others will hate it, that's life.

B and B has managed an extraordinary feat which is in only 2 years to cultivate a similar atmosphere to Mr Kites in the late 70s (now The Green Room.) Mr Kites was one of the most fantastic bars I've ever been in, and I spent the 80s in London and used to frequent some of the coolest places in the UK.

Everyone I knew in Sheff used to go down to Mr Kites on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon to sit around, have a coffee or a beer and read the papers and chat.

The staff at B and B are very friendly and very attentive to customers. The women's toilets (can't speak for the men's) are very clean and welcoming. The atmosphere is second to none, very relaxing with a choice of tables - low coffee tables with comfy sofas by the windows, or proper pub tables with chairs nearer the back which are quiet and out of the way, perfect for a quiet meeting. There is no intrusive screen blaring out sky sports - you can find that at plenty of other pubs if that's what you want. Similarly there are no noisy-light-banging slot machines (which I loathe with a passion.)

I saw two businessmen yesterday lunchtime having a quiet meeting at the back of B and Bs with their laptops open, and on another table a couple talking quietly, on another table near the window in the more busy part, a group of girls all having a right laugh, and on the sofas groups of mates in 2s, 3s, 4s and 5s. This was a weekday lunchtime - great atmosphere and something for everyone. I was talking to the manager, Ollie, about my book launch party this Saturday at B and B and he was constantly aware of customers needing serving and incredibly attentive and polite to the customers.

Anyway if any of you want to come along this Saturday afternoon between 2pm and 5pm to B and B I will be signing my books next to the DJ stand but more relevant for all of you, I will have some stickers with the SF logo on, and a space to write your SF user name, so you can meet other forum users! :) Why don't some of you who like it come down and get a sticker and meet one another IRL? :) I don't mind if you don't buy one of my books, that's only part of the afternoon. Ralph Razor is playing a sultry lounge set and a couple of the peekaboo burlesque girls will be handing out sweets and bookmarks. It's free, there is no exclusive door policy for this, everyone is welcome, it is not some up-your-botty private VIP jobby with everyone standing around quaffing their luke warm free glass of wine and 4 dried up canopies, there will be food and drink at the bar and it's meant to be fun for everyone, so come along :)

PS Get there at 1.50pm if you can because that's when I arrive and the press pics are going to be taken outside on the street.

have to agree with the majority of people on this thread. B&B is a great place to go at any time of the day. Not many places can you go to a bar in the day for a game of scrabble and get some work done as well as having a pint.

I love the lounge bar atmosphere and the independant feel that you seldom get anywhere else in the city centre.

re: the graphiti in the mens, yes it is covered, but they are clean. I think its a good move from the management not to clean the actual graphitti as it would obviously just get covered again, some people will probably find it a unique feature of the place and it doesn't trouble me really. I also love the background sounds played in the toilets...

I really like Bungalows, the food is absolutely amazing as far as pub grub goes but I think in the midst of a recession they need to knock a quid or so off prices and 50 pence or so off on drinks.

if you ask for a regulars card (free) at the bar you get a quid off certain pints I think.

I'm not sure its that pretentious, no more than most so called "classy" places in the city centre. There is no dress code, just a sensible weekend door policy that seems to work IMO. Theres usually only one bouncer and hes not on until the evening so not sure why you had problems getting in on an afternoon.

I've had a bungalows regulars' card since it opened; never knew it entitled you to a drinks discount!

And I'd choose it over F+P anyday of the week. F+P used to be brilliant before the refurb but it just looks like another run of the mill townie pub cum bar now. Having said that, the beer garden is one of the best in the city centre so it's worth popping in for an afternoon bevvie and jacket spud just for that. Not so keen on the place in the evenings though, there's always seems to be a lot of agressive types in and I never feel comfortable. Last time I went in a 10 man brawl errupted (this was on a Sunday night) and the pub got trashed and about 20 police turned up in a dozen vans and cars. I've been loathe to revisit in the evening since. There is so much that could be good about the place if it had a clearer sense of identity though and I hope it has an auspicious future.

I know, but its hardly chinawhite because they have got some steamy author signing books there! come on that would make WH Smiths the place to be in sheffield. as you said someone tried to nick your pint and bag. so it has gone down hill since it changed from "Bar Coast" & "Fire Station"

I haven't got time to go into it now, but yes I did do a bit of modelling back in the late 70s and early 80s, and The Sun actually offered me some page 3 work on the condition that I grow my punky haircut which they felt was too outrageous for The Sun at the time. I politely refused.

There are some shots of me in Custom Car magazine from the late 70s (http://fleurdelyspublishing.blogspot.com/2008/11/custom-car-magazine-1978-and-babies.html), dressed as a schoolgirl, in this blog article (as well as, more importantly, a shot of me and my gorgeous grandson!) If you double click on the Custom Car pics you can see them better.

the card certainally used to get you a discount, 12 months ago it did anyway, on certain drinks.

so if you don't have a card you can't get in at weekends? disgraceful policy IMO, why not just turn it into a members club and have done with it and ban any non members from ever coming in? i can't go out during the week but can at weekends so does this mean i can't get in because im one of the "morons"?

Thankyou chris1983. If you buy my novel, My Adventures In Cyberspace, there is a chapter at the beginning where the protagonist goes onto a forum full of lads all slagging off not only one of her articles in a national magazine, but also her as a person, even though none of them have ever met her. They're talking about her as though she isn't human, just because her article and photo have appeared in one of their climbing lads' mags. She registers on the forum under her own name in order to defend herself, which is the last thing they expect, and a huge bunfight ensues....it was inspired by my own experience on a large climbing forum in the early days of forums, before user profiles and facebook.

There were many other bunfights on that forum over the years as at the time you weren't allowed to discuss anything other than climbing and I was trying to introduce the facility to discuss general topics, much to the horror of the old timers from the dot rec days. And it was watching these bunfights that inspired Yog Sothoth to start posting, and eventually we fell in love and 7 years later here we still are, the story in My Adventures is all inspired by that...forums are very important to me.

apologies if the picture does you no justice and it was really ignorant of me to slag off someone i have never met

That is extremely gracious of you. It takes a lot of courage to publically admit to making a mistake and then to apologise, thankyou. Anyway I work on the basis that anything negative that happens I should treasure and magic into fuel to make positive things happen. For a while I've been putting off assembling a photo gallery to go on the Fleur De Lys site because I've been up to my ears with every other aspect of the business, but you've spurred me on to get together all my modelling shots in one place so that when people slag me off for looking like (shock horror) an author, and not like a surgically face-lifted plasticised botoxed actress, I can direct them to some pictures of me from when all I had to do in my life was look pretty. Yeah, it was a tough life, being a gorgeous young lass ;)

Anyway, why don't you come along tomorrow and get your SF name sticker and meet some other fms? No-one's going to hold it against you that you slagged the place off I'm sure. You could say you were prepared to be converted. :hihi: Although being a George Clooney lookalike you won't need a name sticker. Everyone will point at you as soon as you walk in and say "Blimee it's chris1983 from Sheffield Forum, he does look exactly like George Clooney!" :hihi:

the_white_rose, your book sounds interesting, I always like stories I can relate to and I can relate a lot to meeting people over the net and spending time in forums. The actual forum in question though, was it a forum or a newsgroup? If the latter did you change it into a forum for the book because that's what people are more familiar with now?

The original place that inspired the novel was a forum for climbers. However many of them had first met on the dot rec climbing newsgroup.

If the latter did you change it into a forum for the book because that's what people are more familiar with now?

No, if it had been a newsgroup I'd have kept it that way, coz that would actually have been even cooler ;)

Thank you to everyone who turned up yesterday to the signing party and thanks to those who bought books! Thanks to Ralph Razor for DJing. and to Peekaboo Burlesque Debs and to Pixelwitch Jacqs and Dan Sumption for taking pics and Katie for PAing and a huge thankyou to the staff and management of Bungalows and Bears who were really chilled about the whole thing whilst being incredibly helpful. I can't recommend the venue enough as a place to hold special events like this.

Everyone who attended said they loved the venue and loved the music, some of my guests said the food was absolutely amazing, and my daughters normally frequent the coolest bars in Manchester but love B and Bs.

And a special massive thank you to Sheffield Forum poster and old Silverdale School chum Mutley who drove me to the event in his gorgeous orange Lotus Elise. I will post the pictures online at the end of the week!

A perfect afternoon, thankyou :)

I went in there a few weeks ago and it is a hole. It smelt of sweat and just general dirt. At least the decor when it was bar coast and firestation was contemporary and clean.

I have to agree. We went in on Saturday (while the aforementioned book launch was taking place) and the place absolutely stunk. I dunno what the smell is, just a dirty, greasy, old fusty smell. It wasn't helped that old food was left on some of the tables, and to be honest, all the lads working behind the bar looked like they could do with a good wash aswell!

I used to love this place because it was a bit different to the other townie bars, but not sure I'll be going back in a hurry.

I've now written a short blog article about the book launch party on Saturday, with photos, on my blog. The direct link is here. (http://judecalverttoulmin.blogspot.com/2009/03/book-launch-signing-party-mother-in-law.html)

Look out for Bungalows and Bears in The Guardian's Hidden Treasures where they review some of Britain's hidden pearls such as B and B. The reporter from The Guardian actually visited the bar of course, which rather lends weight to his or her views. :hihi:

agree with the recent comments, the last 3 or 4 times i've been there this month it's absolutely stunk! really not pleasant when eating at lunchtime or having a few drinks on a night out. either they need to sort their drains out or give the place a deep clean, it's horrible.
