View Full Version : Spelling mistakes - should they be picked up?

Why do a lot of posters feel the need to insult and belittle peoples intelligence on here? Quite often when someone gets a fact wrong, misreads something or god forbid submits a typo they often get replies along the line of “well those of us with intelligence can see what XYZ was talking about” followed by the little smiley doing the twirly thing with their finger. (for some reason wont let me do it on works computer)
Because to be honest it just makes you seem small and petty and ironically, not that intelligent. You don’t need to attack someone’s intelligence to prove your point or make yourself feel superior. Just construct a good fact based argument and trust that people are intelligent enough to agree with it.

What do others think?

what kind of sick person finds it relieving and joyful to put people down the world is bad enough at doing that itself.

I quite agree, it must be extremely ego boosting for them and they must go to bed feeling quite pleased with themselves - it would do them more good to wind their necks in once in a while

There are many pedantic people on here as there are in real life. Stop nit picking. It's not big and it certainly aint clever

I agree, there is often too much pedantry on line. However, if someone writes an almost illegible post with no punctuation at all, or uses nothing but txtspk - then I think its reasonable to ask for clarity. Lots of us make typos, or aren't naturally good spellers etc, thats ok as long as what is written is understandable.

When someone new posts on here, having a go about their spelling isn't going to encourage them to come back, and I'd prefer it not to happen. But sadly there is often someone around who has nothing better to do than to point out their mistakes. :shakes:

I've got to admit, when some people have a go at one poster for spelling something incorrectly, it does make me laugh if they've made a mistake in their own post. I've seen that a few times.

I don't like it when somebody is obviously trying, but just not a great speller, and gets picked on for it. But the txtspk, I agree, is irritating beyond belief. You spend ages mentally translating it and most of the time it's not worth the effort.

If certain people on here could spell properly, we wouldn't need to be pedantic.. The your versus you're thing does my head in.. It's all about context

Some people mistakenly believe that verbal abuse and sarcasm add to the validity and strength of their argument.

Are they really contributing to the forum or are they just trolls doing it to start a word war and take the thread completely off topic. They have no interesting views but want to be an attention whore and wants everyone to think he is so funny
What should they mods do? encourage then so we have a high standard of english or ban then so the threads do not go off topic and into silly arguments

personally i think spelling mistakes are irrelevant.

people should try and see the point the person is trying to make, rather than being pedants :)

Replace highlighted words with "the" & "them" , if you are going to have a go at people , at least get your own ends in order. :hihi:

Spot on Solomon, I totally agree, too many trolls do this padentic kind of thing because they don't have anything worthwhile to put into a thread...

Spelling, grammar, and punctuation "mistakes" can make reading a post a rather laborious task. It's English... it's most people's first language here... It's not a crime to make such errors, but it can get exasperating to try and fathom out the meaning of some posts, to discern exactly what the point is that they are trying to get across, when a little bit of time, thought, and effort would produce an intelligible post.... It's easier to snipe than understand, sometimes...

Given that the medium of communication on a forum is the written word then surely being able to write an understandable sentance is a decided plus point. However good the idea might be is irrelevant when the grammar and spelling are so mangled as to render the whole unreadable.

I correct people's spelling every now and then. And I will continue to do so. When someone spells a word incorrectly or uses the wrong word and the mistake is clearly because they are unaware of the correct spelling or which word to use (as opposed to obvious typos like thi where clearly I just missed a button). I figure they might learn and not make the same mistake again.

It annoys me that whenever I do this people claim that I'm resorting to it in order to score petty points in an argument, this has never been the case. On the odd occasion I may point and laugh at a spelling mistake if the person making it has annoyed me, but that's different, it's me pointing and laughing, not arguing. It's almost always an aside to my actual argument.

I agree that posting merely to point out a spelling mistake is rather petty. However there are some members whose grammar, syntax, and spelling are so bad as to make the posting totally unintelligible.
I think in such instances a correction is in order.

Agreed - derailing a thread into sniping about spelling and grammar is not a sign of intelligence.

However, reading through my post before sending it to ensure that spelling and grammar are reasonably correct is not only a simple courtesy to the other Forum users, it also helps me to check whether I am contributing to a thread or getting entangled in an irrelevant argument.

I play guitar. If posting on here it is worth doing a quick check so that I don't post that I am off to play with my pianis.

must admit it took me a long time to submit anything on these threads i had for a while been reading them but some of the replies appeard to criticise how the post had been set out or indeed minor grammar mistakes.if someone as a genuine problem with a posting i am sure if you asked the poster it could all be sorted in a positive way.good banter is always better than just sarcastic replies

i am not great at spelling and even worse at grammer. I always check through what i have written and if im not sure of a spelling i will try to change a word or sentence. I don't have a computer, i follow the forum and post from my mobile phone so i don't have spell checker, i would love it if one wa on already.

Most of the time it (poor spelling and grammar) alone doesn't bother me. Like all things, there are varying levels of ability and as I often remind people, if everyone was good at it, then the ones who are currently good would just be average.

I think there is also an element of context here.

Yesterday I posted " upmost sympathy" to a forumer whose father had broken his neck and become paralysed in a born again biker accident.

In the circumstances I was rather shocked that some pedant posted that I should have put "utmost sympathy".

You have to wonder if some folk have a real life.

Particularly when they are being a bit snooty towards others, there's nothing better than point out a flaw in their high mightiness.;)

Maybe it's a reflection of schooling in this country - apparently spelling and grammar aren't important in English exams any more, just the ideas the pupil is trying to get across.
Personally I think it's an affront to the coherent use of language; a mis-spelled, poorly punctuated piece of writing (wherever that is) is difficult to read and the whole meaning can be changed by improper punctuation. Minor spelling mistakes or grammatical errors aren't a problem, but as other posters have said, when a post is completely garbled because of bad spelling or text speak it's really hard to understand!

I must close now and get on my lover :hihi:

then there's the ones who feel it necessary to use language other than everyday language in an attempt to make themselves sound better than other posters.
