View Full Version : Where did you have your first curry
shazzamattazza 17-03-2009, 14:12 There are many things that you will remember as your first (kiss, drink, car etc) where was your first "real Indian curry " ,in a restaurant.
Mine was at The Maharaja Jalsigar (probably spelt wrong), London Road 1979 or 80 a friends 21st, we thought we were very grown up. I remember my dad said to have a mild curry, so I had a biriani (with egg on top), although I like hotter dishes now, whenever I decide to have a biriani memories come flooding back.
Also remember my dad loved beef curry and rice that came in a tin, you boiled it in a pan and the rice around the side of the tin, the curry was in the middle and you had to run a warm knife around the inside of the tin to get the rice off, I though it was real, bit like Vesta chow mein was real chinese.
I had a very sheltered life ............sniff sniff
sheffield_uk 17-03-2009, 14:16 i had a chicken korma with chips at the moonlighting restaurant in horbury nr wakefield about
22 yrs ago :)
think its a co-op supermarket now....
nefertari 17-03-2009, 14:36 Mine was a prawn korma in the Indian restaurant in Ecclesfield, about 1977 I think it was.
stonecircle 18-03-2009, 19:31 On a corner of West Street near Sinclairs as I recall. I would say its now an Italian, can't remember the name though *** and would guess it was 1980.
My friend want to the same place weeks later but not with me and when they offered her the steaming facecloth at the end of the meal she thought it was to eat!!!
*** I have now discovered this was called Shujon and was owned by the same person who along with a partner owned Ashoka 1967 and Mogul.
.
the star of india in attercliffe, long gone now but you cant beat the induz
Ballyfoy 18-03-2009, 20:02 The one at the bottom of the moor (cant remember the name) but was near to the Whetstone... I didn't actually have a curry 'cos had no idea what to order or if i would like it, so had omlette and chips, but my boyfiend had a really hot curry I tried some, and I was so glad i hadn't ordered one. This was back in the mid 70's. Happy days....
i was 16 (around 9/10 years ago) and had gone on a night out with work friends. We went to what i think is called siheed's on west st. It is still there. I told my 'friends' that i liked quite hot food so they recommended i have a madrass. we also had poppadoms and a pickle tray. One of the said friends offered me some lime pickle. Wow it blew my head off, i asked if my curry would be as hot and they said hotter! Well of course it wasn't they were having a laugh and my madrass was lovely. Thank god.
the induz and i had scampi curry .
Ms Macbeth 18-03-2009, 21:19 1965 - in a new Indian Restaurant near Dundee University. It was a chicken curry - no different types on the menu, but you could have lamb or beef. Frequented mainly by students, it was my first curry and I thought the experience was pretty exotic. How times have changed.
Stockers 18-03-2009, 21:46 The one at the bottom of the moor (cant remember the name) but was near to the Whetstone... Shapla, always a wise choice.
I think my first ever curry after a night out could have been Sahibs on West St about 1995 ish.
mine was at shababs in hudersfield me and my brother were taken there every sunday from being about 7 because they did a fantastic buffet and my mum n dad loved it there, not been for years but the memories i have are fond ones
Rice Owl 19-03-2009, 17:08 Rajput - on the day I moved to Walkley in 1986. It's still the best curry in Sheffield.
Jozafeen 19-03-2009, 18:08 On a corner of West Street near Sinclairs as I recall. I would say its now an Italian, can't remember the name though and would guess it was 1980.
My friend want to the same place weeks later but not with me and when they offered her the steaming facecloth at the end of the meal she thought it was to eat!!!
My first curry was there too and I can't remember what it was called either! :)
Blue Monday 21-03-2009, 08:22 Mine was in the early 70's at a little place on Langsett Road that has long gone. Think it might have been the Oriental which sounds more Chinese but I'm sure it was an Indian. Bit of a culture shock to the packet Vestas beef Curries that were popular at the time !
frenchfrie 21-03-2009, 08:47 Mine was at the Islamabad on the 'cliffe and I'd just started work so it must have been 1980. Remember the bhajis blowing my head off and couldn't handle the basic curry. How times change, I'm addicted to chillis and spicy food now and a vindaloo or phall is my idea of food heaven.
50's chick 22-03-2009, 02:36 nirmals about 1995 ...i was so scared of it being spicy that nirmal herself made me an extra mild korma, lol! funny how things change as now i'm much more of a madras girl. my ex used to love that scruffy little place on spital hill (can't remember the name but it was like a greasy spoon and you'd go across the road to buy a pint and then take it back to the curry house) but i hated that one.
jfish1936 22-03-2009, 04:56 Chesterfield Hospital; back in 1960 we were among the few British resident medical staff, and most residents were Indian; on Sunday night they made curry rather than have the hospital's wilted salad.
We were inaugurated into the mysteries of creating the disges.

Could possibly have been the New Bengal?
Had my first curry here. Also the scene of the famous snorting of lime pickle through a bus ticket incident:D
Jim
The Maharaja on London Road, I was off work for two days! Still at it now, never learned?
girlyblonde 07-11-2011, 15:22 My mum bought one of those Vesta Curries in a box, lol , we thought we were very cosmopoliton eating a curry..lol i was at school at the time lol :)
Curry centre on London Road, many many years ago, asked for a mild chicken curry it nearly blew my head off it was that hot, the waiters deff set me up:hihi:
DerbyTup 07-11-2011, 17:27 It wasn't until the early 1980's that I had my first curry. It was at a restaurant called Mogal-E-Azam, which is still there now, behind the Theatre Royal in Nottingham. At the time I was entertaining professional clients, let's call them that, and they had suggested this place. It was, maybe still is, a good Indian restaurant - but I'd no idea what food to order. I was quite nervous about it to be honest because I'd always been a fussy eater with a limited diet and I didn't want to cause offence by not being able to eat anything!
I was lucky that my guests guided me. I had chicken tikka starter and a chicken korma main course. I thought it was ok. Nothing more. In fact I said I wouldn't go back again. Then a week later I was entertaining more clients and guess where they wanted to go? And the following week, and the week after that, more of the same.
I think within a month I'd come to appreciate that Indian food was nice. Within about 3 months I'd come to think it was the best food in the world - and it's still one of my favourites. Although I view chicken korma in particular as a bit of a beginners curry dish. I like it - but there are much better curries than that.
My favourite curry house in Sheff is Akbar's and I like the Roshan Lal - a spicy lamb curry, in particular.
Jack's Rake 07-11-2011, 17:39 Sheesh kebab, chicken madras and two chapattis with Barry Belch, Gill Entwistle and Sheryl Mason. Around January 1984 at the Raj Manzil on Bradshawgate, Bolton.
Life changing.
maggidee 07-11-2011, 19:09 1968.... The Curry Centre on London Road. Cheap and cheerful!!!! sadly long gone. Was taken over by Hakims but that has now gone as well.!!
the_rudeboy 07-11-2011, 19:26 It was in one on Westfield Terrace, think it was called the New Bombay, in 1981.
shalimar in fitzalan square, late 70s, cant remember what it tasted like though.
HarrietStar 07-11-2011, 23:46 Have been eating curry since a baby do probably 1984 in London :)
I don't remember getting fed milk when I was a child.. All I remember are Chappatis and Lamb curry ;) x
CaptainChaos 08-11-2011, 06:53 I can't believe no-one has mentioned the Ashoka on Eccy Rd. the old owner (Kamal) was amazing, he would remember what drinks and how many popadums you wanted every time you went. He also had a memory for faces like you wouldn't believe.
It was certainly my first experience of Indian food around 1973, I've been addicted ever since.
Darth Vader 08-11-2011, 09:32 87/88 Everest, Chesterfield Road. Chicken Korma, that I had the misfortune of seeing again, on the pavement outside of the restaurant. And I'd not had any alcohol!
Love a nice curry now though. Unfortunately, they seem few and far between in Sheffield at the moment.
sheffgrow 08-11-2011, 11:59 i remember the first curry takeaway we had it was from the shimla near tinsley roundabout, they used to send it up in a taxi, my mom had no idea how to dish it up so we just ended up with everything on the same plate with a mincemeat curry, i drove past it years later and it was a right scruff hole
Billy Casper 08-11-2011, 13:01 Islamabad on Attercliffe...A real baptism of fire!!! :hihi:
curriechick 08-11-2011, 13:44 shalimar in fitzalan square, late 70s, cant remember what it tasted like though.
Was that the one at the side of the cinema where you had to go down some steep stairs to get it?
If so that is where I had my first curry, it was just a chicken curry with rice I think. It would be about 1974 I had been on a date to the cinema next door and we went there to eat afterwards, I was only 16 and felt really grown up.
I had a Prawn Korma at Weelsby Hall in Grimsby about 18 years ago, hated it and went straight across to the shop for a Mars Bar after.
Bertielil 08-11-2011, 17:55 1976, in the middle of Birmingham, can't remember the name or what I had to eat, can remember being totally hooked from that moment on.
A muso boyfriend took me, it was very late, he didn't finish his set until 1.00am, so if I remember correctly it was 2.00am before we started to eat, 4.30am when I arrived home & up for work the next morning. Ah youth, Happy Days.
Another one for The New Bengal (or the Bengy) on West Street.
NBA is and a Chicken Madras was a regular end to a Friday night out in the 70s.
But now a regular at The Rajput .

No, that was called the Indus. And it wasn't good either!

Hahaha. They make you an even better curry, ;) x
Lady Star 09-11-2011, 19:11 Early 80's as a small kid at my nans - she'd ordered a tandoori chicken and rice from a take away and gave me some too !
curriechick 09-11-2011, 19:42 No, that was called the Indus. And it wasn't good either!
I can't remember whether it was good or not, just that I felt grown up going to the cinema when it wasn't a Saturday matinee and then actually going for a meal , not just any meal an Indian meal. When I told my parents I had, had a curry they were nearly sick at the thought of what they called "foreign muck".
When I think about how our eating habits have changed over the years, my 9 year old grandaughter when asked recently in a restaurant what she wanted for a starter she asked have they got calamari!! and the 5 year old's favourite dish is moules mariner
Some place just down from The Royal Liver building in Salford, when I was about 4.
After that it was chicken Korma, chips and rice in some place in Eccles.
Happy days, I seem to be allergic to restaurant curries nowadays.
Nirmals 1992, been going there since, told them many a time I was underage drinking back then, too late to throw me out now

Do you really think it's that unusual for UK kids to eat seafood? We live on a island! My dad used to boil up pans of mussels when I was a little kid in the late 70's/early 80's and my nan used to eat crab like each one might be her last... I think that some families might have had some 'food issues' and that this is less likely to be the case now... The UK used to have one of the most varied and at times strange diets in europe prior to the 2nd world war... Rationing put paid to alot of what we ate, and created a weird land where pie and peas and sunday roasts ruled... That wasn't the case before, and perhaps we've just took our time going back to where we were, plus the new additions of meals like fish and chips (eastern european jews) curries (pakistan) and chow mein (china)...
Jug Ears 10-11-2011, 09:24 Summer 1989, at the Star of Asia on London Road. Not a clue what I ordered, but it was fantastic

No I don't think it is unusual as my children had sea food and fish on a regular basis, however what I was saying is that 5 years old I had never been in a restuarant and would never have even heard the term moules mariner, even though I knew what mussles were as my dad loved them, and even now with my varied palate I hate squid and calamari. I was just stating that I felt very grown up at 16 to be going out for a meal and trying something that was to me alien.
My first restaurant curry was a post Monday night at Republic one. It was called the 'Star of India 2' near the bottom end of the old Sugg Sports. We took all of our mates week in-week out, as a reward the manager/owner used to give us free red wine. Chicken Bhuna, Red Wine, Chapatti's and Pilau Rice. Memories :-)
I had a balti curry, in Lye, in the West Midlands..can't remember the name of the resturant. But, its not far from Brum and the area became quite famous for a while in the 70s.
Maharaja ghalsa ghar with Trever Peat and his music on London Road, about 1980, had a chicken madras, absolutely beautiful never tasted one the same since. also there was a good restuarant further down london road below the pheasant which is now barry`s bar, forgot the name ?
Ambars on Ecclesall Road, around 1992. Up till then, Vesta Beef Curry urgh (http://www.concordextra.com/product/7215/Offers/VESTA+BEEF+CURRY+157G/) was the most exotic food I'd ever had. I was dragged there for a work do, dreaded the hot food and thought that all Indian food was deep fried onion bhaji.
I think I ordered Rogan Josh because the tomatoes sounded good. I didn't much like it - not because the restaurant was bad but simply because I wasn't used to it.
I avoided Indian for about the next 5 years. Fast forward to now and I'm a curry freak, I have at least 3 a week (and have to exercise hard to make up for it).
I've never been back to Ambars even though I now live within easy walking distance. It still looks smart but has hardly changed in 20 years.
I think it's time to pay a visit...
No, that was called the Indus. And it wasn't good either!
My first one was also at the Indus (Rauf Din RIP was a lovely man) But once I got the taste it was the Himalaya on convent Walk for me.
After the Indus burnt down Rauf took over the old Pink Panther at Broomhill and that was extremely good food and I had many a good lunch with him. Unfortunately it is now the Balti King
steel117 15-11-2011, 08:08 Bilash at Sharrow vale road!
bobbyblade 16-11-2011, 09:44 my first fave place was new india garden in heeley before the refurb, the carpet was that bad you use to wipe your feet on the way out but the food was exquisite, always came home with a doggy bag and i live 25 mile away.
the owner a curteous elderly gent was always welcoming in his tandori stained shirt and matching hands and teeth, absolutely fabulous:hihi:)
The Bombay, up the road from frog and parrot. Onion bhaji, chicken bhuna, pilau rice and a garlic naan. Was that long ago I can't remember the year
I think my first ever curry was at Maim Sahib near West Bar, which was a better version of the Sahib on West Street.
Was there also another Indian down there called Shalimar?
Regards
Doom
oldskater 17-11-2011, 19:47 mine was in a beefeater called the mitre in stockton on tees
i was 17 (30 yrs ago) and i had chicken tikka. i thought it was the spiciest thing in the whole world.

I think it was Shalimar on the roundabout, very popular with taxi drivers. I loved Sahib, Maim Sahib and the same owner also ran Shiraz at Broomhill for a few years after his uncle (Mr Din) died, which is now unfortunately Balti King. :gag:
