View Full Version : The Best Sunset In The World
BoppinBruce 28-06-2005, 10:50 I have travelled in my lifetime. The place that I visited that bills itself as having the best sunset in the world was Oia on the Greek island of Santorini.
I challenge that as the best I have seen is on my own doorstep.
Go to the bolehills any sunny summer evening, sit and muse as the sun goes down.
Any one else seen it and agree with me.
Two come to mind Bruce.
The first was standing on the Surprise View watching the sun disappear with the Peak District shrouded in mist after a thunder storm.
The second one was sitting in my car on the sea front in Galway, watching the sunset over Galway Bay.
Both took your breath away, and were a privilege to see.

I bet I've seen it more times than Bing ever did :D and I am off to see it again soon
sheff_minx 28-06-2005, 11:21 Over the reservoir at Coombs in the Peak District. I live near there and was wandering down to the pub one night and looked across and it was just there!! Stunning colours and the sun was setting in the dip between two hills!
Agent Orange 28-06-2005, 11:23 I dont know about where is best to see great sunsets around these parts, but I know the best sunset I've seen was while I was on a trans-atlantic flight coming back from the caribbean.
I have seen many sunsets around the world, but none has beaten those viewed from my own bedroom window back home in Crosby. In winter they are especially beautiful as the sun goes down over Snowdonia national park amongst a kaleidoscope of purple, red, violet and orange. It's something that I didn't appreciate as a child because I saw the sunset most nights, but when I visit home these days, I make a point of watching every sunset that I can.
Another good sunset came last week sitting on a beach near Biarritz. There was a storm over the Bay of Biscay and the sun seemed to tear a hole right through the middle of it as it headed towards the horizon. It was quite stunning. Shortly after we got rained on, which kind of spoilt the moment?

This one gets my vote too, although I lived a couple of miles away from Andy
Some of Crosby's tamer sunsets (http://www.crosbycam.co.uk/pics_of_crosby.php)

ibiza, outside cafe del mar- bliss!!!
Boppin bruce the sunset in santorini is a special one if you dont get the low cloud or mist rolling arround from around the caldera and volacno area, but at the sunset time of night it seems to happen.
the main effect is that the sky turns a stange purple/gold colour and the 4 small islands situated off the coast of crete cause an effect like five dark fingers to shot inot the night sky.
found some images here http://www.exoticdestinations.com.au/santorini.htm
it is a fab island and very friendly, bit quiet no big hotels and comlexes very relaxing holiday,
pitsmoor 28-06-2005, 15:38 The best sunset ive seen is in ibiza stood outside mambo very nice i might go see it again this summer.
HottyMcBuff 28-06-2005, 15:54 My nicest one has to be at this place called Mountain Gate, near Llangorse in the Brecon Beacons, looking out over the lake and Pen Y Fan beyond it. Sat cuddling girlfriend. Bliss.
Oh, and surfing in Biarritz late into a summer evening there was a pretty tasty one too.
Thought I saw an amazing one at Reading Festival a few years back, but that may have been substance related :wow:

HottyMcBuff 28-06-2005, 16:26 I'm worried now. Strix, have you actually been following me and taking pictures of any sunsets to which I am a witness? :suspect:
;)
I got the right one then? :)
Is this you too? (http://www.danheller.com/images/Fujipix/Misc/sunset-couple-big.jpg) :hihi:

Awww thanks sweetie - was wondering where that photo was :) mental note: we need to take the digi camera everywhere as we always see pretty things when its in the drawer at home :)
alchresearch 28-06-2005, 18:44 Here's mine, a place called Porth Oer (Whistling Sands) in a little corner of the Llyn Peninsula in North West Wales:

This picture was taken about 10.30pm the Sunday night before last. I've got a lot more, I'll make up a gallery in this folder later.
About the best I've seen is watching the sunset on Ayers Rock in Oz, just watching the rock go through a whole change of colours is magic.
The other is from my home in Ruby Bay in NZ, watching it drop below the mountains across the bay.
Happy Days!
The best sunset I have ever seen was 5 years ago, I was stood on the south rim of the Grand Canyon, to this day i have never seen anything like it, it was awesome...
tslogf74 28-06-2005, 21:59 Any night on Teesside:

'tis indeed a nice sunset. Here's a photo of it (http://www.flickr.com/photos/chill/3991073/) I snapped ealier this year.
matsalleh 28-06-2005, 22:47 Holiday brochure photographers (http://www.photobox.co.uk/album/album_photo.html?c_photo=26412966.jpg) looking for a sunset. It was actually here (http://www.photobox.co.uk/album/album_photo.html?c_photo=26412504.jpg) about 400 yds and 20 minutes away.
Forgot to say it is Porec in Croatia.
Phanerothyme 28-06-2005, 22:48 The thing is, a combination of sparse high alt clouds, westward high pressure and a long twilight will more often than not yield visual spectaculars, and when viewing them it is sometimes hard not to burst into spontaneous applause.
This happens regularly in Carmel, to my knowledge, where people gather on the beach to enjoy the sunset.
I took this (http://www.netheredge.com/galleries/sunset_wymingbrook-1.jpg) sat on a particular rock overlooking Wymingbrook and the top of the Rivelin valley, midsummer 2003. I took quite a few more, but this is the pick.
Looks like a sea is required to get the best purples and reds though
This could all end in a photo competition ;)
Geoff!!!!!
No picture available, but my most memorable sunset was standing hand-in-hand with my girlfriend on a cliff-top at Salcombe in Devon the night before the 1999 eclipse. One of those sights that stays with you forever.
Which one, Ant?

You're a one-woman photo archive, Strix.
If that is indeed Salcombe bay:

...then we walked up the path that leads to the cliff to the right of the picture, past the Gara hotel.
Do you have any pictures of my granny?

PT asked that yesterday - sadly, no :(
Doesn't anybody else use Google image search?
Why on Earth did PT ask you for a picture of my granny? Just what the hell did my mother get up to? She was a dark horse, that one.
Not as dark as my great-great-grandmother - if the stories are to be believed ;)
Phanerothyme 29-06-2005, 01:10 well how bout some pictures of the freak nacreous sky over yorkshire and the humber back in 98-99 maybe?
Now that was impressive!
Strix, you've been challenged. Get on to it.
None of your archived sunset pics with the Sheffield Cathedral cut n pasted in, mind.
Done (http://www.ohek.co.uk/curiosities/sky.htm)
Is this the right one Phan?
Only took 10 seconds
My favourite couple of sunsets I've taken photos of recently (I must take my camera with me more often! :)) can be seen here (http://www.photorich.co.uk/). No particularly nice cloud formations, but a nice juxtaposition of sky and land - in this case San Francisco bay. The first one looks great in a 20x16" frame on the wall - I love my EOS300D! ;)
I watched the sun set at the Grand Canyon, nothing has bettered that yet.

Must have been gorgeous in the right place. I think I missed the best of it, this (http://www.photorich.co.uk/sunset.jpg) was the best shot I got. The colours don't really come out, but you can get a sense of it by the reflections in the rain on the rooftop :)
 Somebody in Crosby has naffed up the best sunset in the world with these (http://www.seftoncoast.org.uk/index_news.html)

Gormley's work in conjunction with a school in StHelens (I believe) is still touring the world ("Field for the british Isles").
These are no more obtrusive than actual people standing on the beach. Ruining the sunset? Possibly, if you stand nose to nose with one of the figures.
Is all this sublimated anger against art in general or just this particularly gifted artist?

Got you talking about it though hasn't it?Is it any different to Yorkshire Sculpture Park, some might say spoiling the countryside with lumps of iron (not me).

The thing about Crosby beach is it's a wonderful place for quiet contemplation, it's not a seaside sort of beach. It's somewhere to get away from the crowds and hussle and bustle.
Somebody has just plonked 100 naked blokes where there was once nothing standing between you and America.
If you haven't been there, you'll have no idea what I mean :shakes:
Andy78?
Thank god it's only temporary

Andy likes them too. And he's right - they're excellent.
And I used to live in Southport, and walked the beach southwards many many times.
It must be said that I do indeed like them. In summer the beach is always busy with people anyway. The best time to go is at dusk on a crispy cold winters evening. I don't think they interfere with the sunset as they are really quite spaced out, so only the closest one is really visible. And you'd be hard to even notice the closest one at dusk.
I know a lot of Kite borders/Buggiers who will be a bit miffed though. Any traction kite sports are currently banned while the display is there (for pretty obvious reasons). It's a perfect spot for kite sports with the near constant breeze and miles of flat ground.
How did this et brought back up?
Got some pikkies of the clipper race starting off from The 'Pool last weekend. Must get around to posting them :)
Think this (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=61926) had something to do with it.
Sorry, found it since posting that ;)
I've seen some lovely Sheffield sunsets, but I'm afraid my vote goes to the summer sunsets seen from on a boat on the Zambezi River. Breathtaking, but so equatorial they don't last very long. Sorry I can't post links, but the photos are hardcopy and my scanners's a bit dead right now.
MissGobby 27-09-2005, 10:19 went to cornwall a month-or so ago, went to Lands End, right at the end of the UK, we saw the sunset, it was lovelllly! cant beat a sunset abroad though can ya!
The BEST sunset EVER is seen on the top of Glastonbury Tor in the arms of someone you love, with like minded people, guitarists strumming quietly in the background and time ...........magical.
