I'm attending an event over three days in mid-April and am interested in any opinions on restaurants that are unique, essential, etc. and that preferably showcase local flavors--whatever that may be. Underground "supper clubs" are always a plus--but any advice will be greatly appreciated.

If you’ve got two nights out I’d split them up and do:
Unique & essential
Head the short distance to Leeds and try Anthony’s restaurant. Yorkshires trailblazing young gun Anthony Flinn (shame he’s from Leeds)
Local flavours
I’d go to a gastro pub. Some I like and in no particular order are The Milestone, Cricket Inn & Wortley Arms also make sure you try some of the real ales as we have a long tradition of brewing beer .
If you’ve only got one night out Anthony’s every time
Try these also AA restaurant guide, good food guide, Michelin food guide. All very good
P.S when you leave could you take McDonalds, Star Bucks, Burger King & all the rest back with you….:)

Only choose the Milestone if you go for the 'early bird' menu between the hours of 5pm and 7pm. This provides a two course meal and a glass of wine for £12. Don't go at other times as it doesn't represent good value for money and wouldn't be a good representation of what Sheffield is about. The Milestone is my favourite haunt and I do live right next to it but it isn't 'all that!'

Artisan is good also (in Crosspool) but again, go for the early bird menu.

If you want to try the absolute peak then perhaps the Old Vicarage, as reccommended above.

No matter what you decide, if you need someone to show you round, let me know!

I'd disagree with this. The early bird menu is too limited. If you're on a budget, stick to Mcdonalds.

I'd agree with this. You'll get some great meals in Sheffield, but if you're after something unique you need to head out to Leeds and book Anthony's.

Of course, we are all entitled to our opinions, but if overpriced and small portions are your thing then Milestone in normal guise is fine. Last time I was there the Beef Bourguignon was just a slab of meat (albeit absolutely wonderful) piled on some mash.... and no veg!!! Wtf! Come on now that is just stingy.

And don't even get me started on the Valentines menu! ;)

I haven't been for food for a month or so, and will go again soon, so that does say something about the quality of the food!

Did it taste good? If it did, it was worth the money. I think £100 for 3 courses and two bottles of wine for two is fair when the food tastes excellent (this was my last bill from the Milestone for dinner on a friday evening downstairs).

Fischers of Baslow www.fischers-baslowhall.co.uk is also well worth a visit.

Yes it was lovely. However it could have just been taken that little bit further with some veg - which costs the business no more than 50p a plate and does make all the difference.

At the end of the day, you can pay whatever you like. I have spent £180 on a meal for two there but again - was left disappointed which made me yet more puzzled about the place. Spending loads doesn't necessarily mean that it was good.

The Milestone have been sneaking in cheaper and cheaper cuts and reducing portion sizes, while maintaining a high price. I mean cmon - pigs head is on the menu now! No doubt it is beautifully prepared but can you see what I mean?

I remember the days (only back in 2007) of the Rib Eye Steak sandwich for £9.95. That was simply wonderful. The place has slowly been twisting it's yuppie audience who don't know better.

Anyway - Mr / Mrs Seattle, do try the Milestone and see what you think!

You could try the Coach & Horses at Dronfield. They have excellent home cooked food. The food policy is that of Emma Harrison from Thornbridge Hall. She is fanatical about home produced food made from locally sourced ingredients.

I have only been back in the UK for a few days, but I made a point of trying the place, and it seems every bit as good as good as it was last year.

Yes, the Coach & Horses at Dronfield is a good little pub, I'd second that. Friendly staff, good quality food and top notch beer from Thornbridge Hall Brewery. It's only a small place though, so reservations are essential!

Coach & Horses is on Sheffield Road next to the Sheffield FC football ground (oldest football club in the world), buses 43 and 44 stop right outside.
